magnesium sulfate and protein issue

hello all
i have noticed that i have issues (hair becomes like straw) with products that contain magnesium sulfate and protien. for those of you with the same issues what are your HG products -- poo, condition, cream, gel, etc.
thanks so much.
Hi,
I don't use anything with magnesium sulfate because of the reasons you mention, but I do find a protein treatment perks up my curls. After I do it, I use Lustrasilk Olive Oil conditioner mixed with Curlisto Deep Therapy Masque to make sure I add back as much moisture as possible. I always use Deva Lo Poo when I poo and VO-5 Tea Therapy Blackberry revitalizing condition when I co-wash.

The main thing is to add as much moisture as possible if you are using products with mag. sulfate or protein. Hope this helps!

Protein sensitive
Highly porous. Color over grey.
Best 1st day method: Super Soaker
Conditioners: Curl Junkie Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner,
Deep condish: Curl Junkie Curl Rehab
Stylers: Experimenting with cones & sulfates while the dews are high.
Sometimes try roller sets - classic glamor but I prefer my curls.

curly pearl -- thanks for the response. what products do you use to style your hair -- and how do you add moisture.
thanks again
Hi Hrgirl1314,

What type of hair do you have. A lot of curlies can't tolerate magnesium sulfate. I think this has to do with porosity. I have high porosity hair (as does curlypearl) and it seems we don't like MS.

Usually you avoid protein if you have coarse hair, low porosity, or non-elastic hair. Also your hair can max out on protein if you use too much of it.

As far as other products, that would depend on if you had coarse, normal or fine textured hair. If you have any damage or if your hair is dry by nature. A few of these facts might help. The type of product also depends on the dewpoints and climates in your area.

In general you can add moisture by using a leave-in before you put a gel in your hair. KCKT is a good leave-in, and KCCC is very moisturizing styling cream. GVP Conditioning Balm can also be used as a leave in and is very moisturizing. The gel will then seal in the moisture. If you use a moisturizing hair cream like KCCC, well it does just that--moisturizes your hair as well as gives shine and shape to curls.

Hi hrgirl314,

I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help with the styling products question, because I haven't found my HG so I kind of keep rotating products and hoping something will work. I like KCKT as a leave in with KCCC the best, but it takes forever to dry my hair when I use this combo. I also like Mop-C Curl Cream but it seems to build up on me and make my hair "plasticky" if I don't use the exact correct amount which is hard to determine. I had great results once with Living Proof No Frizz but haven't been able to duplicate the results. So I'm still on the search for great styling products. Sometimes I use Curlisto products - they're OK, but not as good as the KCKT/KCCC combo.

Let us know if you find a great styling product! I've gotten the curls to look a lot better since I joined this website and have been following the rules and not over-drying it, but still haven't found a really great styling solution. Good luck!

thanks girls. my hair is coarse and dry -- although since going CG it is not as bad as it used to be. I have tried many a product with good results maybe for a day or two or three but that's about it. i guess my favorite products are LA Looks Sports Gel and Mop-C curl cream. I use about quarter size (my hair is just shoulder length) or a quarter and a half size amount and rake it through my hair. then i put A LOT of gel (which is why i am so thankful the less expensive LA looks gel works) over it. I really like the deva no poo, low poo and one c. Expensive but worth the money for me. I am not that aware of all the abbreviations -- what is KCCC and GVP. Thanks again. Haven't been to this board in a while and totally forgot how great it is!!

GVP = Generic Value Product (this is sold at Sally's Beauty Supply stores). The GVP conditioning balm is a great all purpose moisturizing conditioner at around $6-8 bucks for a large bottle.

Personally for my super dry medium coarse/oarse hair I like using Jessicurl Weekly Deep Treatment. I use a quarter size for my mid-back length hair as a rinse out after co-wash. For a deep treatment I use a generous palm full and leave it in for 1-3 hours and the result is super soft hair.
