Magnesium Sulfate Intolerance - Science Question

I found out quickly after going CG 18 months ago that my hair hated MagSulf, so I have always avoided it.

My hair has changed ALOT in the past year and a half - It used to be drier, used to love glycerin and the texture has gone from a 2a/b to a 3a/b. I am wondering if my hair would have a different/better reaction to products with MagSulf.

Does anyone know the science behind bad reactions to this ingredient?

TIA

rudee I don't have any links or anything to offer you on this. But it seems the more porous you are the greater chance of you not being able to handle Mag Sulph. I know jillipoo being porous, can't use it and misspam has trouble too although she is Med so being Med you could swing either way. I'm sure being coarse doesn't help which is why I can't tolerate it either. If you look at the types of "heads" that generally tolerate this ingredient though their siggies will say Low or Med porosity. You can do an experiment and make a Salt Spray to try it out in your hair and see how it reacts. There should be some links in the recipe forum I know I posted a thread a while back with a link to all natural recipes and there definitely was a salt spray one there. If you go to my proile and check the many, many threads I've started you'll find it quickly.

OK, so you are saying its the salt angle that is problematic?

Well, I dont think of my hair as porous, so its worth a try.

Thanks Doc

That's just my guess rudee based on my own experience with this evil ingredient But you should see my hair after swimming in the Beach it's DRY DRY DRY as can be my hair hates salt! You do realize that you'll be "curlier" using mag sulph right I didn't think that's what you were looking for....

1st I'd like to say that I'm not an expert or particularily scientific. From articles I've read, the hair contains disulfide bonds which cause the curls in the hair (the kinks and bends). Magnesium sulfate apparently helps hair bond sulfates which leads to an increase in curl, therefore, curl enhancing. I've also read that magnesium sulfate absorbs oil which would lead to dryness. It is used as a drying agent in some things (not hair products) because it has the ability to become hydrated, therefore, draws out moisture. So, this is my guess as to why some hair does not do well with it. Not sure if this makes sense. Sorry, I don't have the articles or remember where I found the information as I looked this up a while ago when adding MS to my FSG. I'm sure there are others out there who have the expertise to speak to this.

I have very curly hair, but didn't want it to lose definition with FSG so took the precaution of adding the pinch (plus I'm like that when I cook, you know, a little pinch of this a little pinch of that - lol). It would be interesting to see if your hair reacts differently now.
