Haircut Countdown..... UPDATE!

rudee that's great! I always wondered about you not wanting to dry upside down due to the volume. I'm curious too how much product did he use on you?? Was this an eye opener as well? Did you ask him about your porosity? Does this mean you won't be going GEL free after all?? Sorry for all the questions rudee This is just so different from what you've been doing, I'm dying to see what it looks like when you apply his technique.

LOL... Ok, heres a copy of my PM to D:

I was sooooo nervous! But he is a doll!
Okay, lots to cover. First of all he taught me a TON about clipping!!!!. Secondly he used a CRAPLOAD of product - he leaves in most of your rinse out (he said No more Soap Bars cause my hair is a bit dried out between them and color) The final rinse was a liight cool rinse of just the crown to wash the product down the hair shaft.
Then he took me to the mirror and raked thru a palmful of a Deva product that was creamy white, he raked and raked - i almost PASSED OUT! Next he said I should take my towel and scrunch a ton (!!!!) my hair was all light and bouncy and no matter how much he touched it it didnt frizz. He said that was because of all the condish he left in.
Next he scrunched in a generous palmful of gel - again, he was scrunching away and SO not babying the hair!. Next he used a crapload of clips to clip the crown (now I see why clipping never worked for me, I was inserting them wrong). I went under the dryer for about 15 minutes, then he diffused the ends UPSIDE DOWN while scrunching for less than 5 minutes.

At this point i was about 75% dry (??) He removed the clips and again scrunched the crap out of my hair - and it simply did not frizz! it looked glossy and defined and clumpy but in a much airier way than it does with the SSM. Honestly D, it looked like a Deva Ad - It looked AMAZING!! I had to catch a train home so I ran out that way and was SURE it would poof over the course of the day but it NEVER DID!!

A few minuses: He wants me to wash daily - and now I see why: you CANNOT use that much product and get 2nd day hair. I woke up to slightly gunky heavy hair. But its GREAT for a special occasion or pictures or whatever - can't wait to see if I can duplicate it!
Also, with that much product it is NOT touchable hair - it LOOKS touchable and has movement but you can't play with it - and you know i like to touch my hair. Plus who the hell wants to wash every day when they can get 2 or 3 days??

As for the cut - honestly I have to do my hair myself to see. He cut conservatively - said he liked me long and that the layers just needed fixing. He cut me dry and used an interesting zigzaging part method to free up the curls. The cut itself was brief and it baffles me that he did it dry, on 2nd day pulled out hair... but he claims he can see where the texture varies. Again, need to do it on my own to see. Also, LOL - he wants me to lose the straight bangs - I told him I would think about it.

Overall it was a positive experience and will be a full thumbs up if I love the cut itself when I do it myself.

Will keep you posted - I think i remembered everything.

Oh thanks Rudee!!! I'm so glad he taught you a few new things...it's nice when they do that and make it an experience of not only relaxation but learning.

So with the clipping--how many did he use? Like multiple layers of them? I'm curious about that since Tiffany used quite a few too and I haven't been able to duplicate it well..and it had volume but no poofy which I liked.

Far as poof and frizz we found that there is an inverse relationship between them and the amount of leave in you leave in...we add about 6-8 tbsp minimum in Tahia's hair and that's pretty much cut the frizz to nothing. But we don't use gel or anything else in her hair which is probably why we can get away with several days hair with that much product. When I've done her hair for pictures or events (she sings in a choir) and we use gel and all that..yeah..it's kind of gross the next day and must be washed

Thank you so much for sharing!!!!

As for clips - TONS! First one layer all around the part on the crown, and then another layer on the layer just beneath that. I would say easily more than a dozen!

Oh, one more thing: He told me not to plop - said thats contributing to the density and tightness of my texture. Carlos feels only wavies should plop, tho I am sure many curlies here would beg to differ.

rudee -- you are right, carlos uses lots of product, but i think all the stylists at/from devachan do.
carlos knows i don't like a lot of product and i've told him how much of what to use, so that now he laughs and takes pride in remembering what i like on my hair!!!
can't wait to see your cut, hear how it is once you style it yourself.

You know, I use a ton of product too. But my Deva stylist did as well so I thought that was normal. I get okay 2nd day hair though as long as the products I've used don't have any plastic polymers in it.

Again..Pictures please!!

i do leave in lots of conditioner, almost all of it. i probably leave in more conditioner than carlos does! lol
and now i am not using any styling product, so lots of conditioner (cj curl rehab) works well -- curly, no frizz, touchable.

I'm not surprised by this at all. If you were getting your hair cut every 4-6 wks like a straightie that might not be an issue.
He wants me to wash daily
What was his reason for this? Was it because your hair is dry and it will stay hydrated better if you wash daily? I wonder if the issues you've been having have been related to your hair just being dry!!!

he wants me to lose the straight bangs
I would love to see this!!! It would be a nice change right?? Did he style you this way without the bangs? Why on EARTH haven't you posted PICS. Evil EVIL girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then he took me to the mirror and raked thru a palmful of a Deva product that was creamy white,
I'll have to assume that's Set it Free if it was after your wash. That stuff will make your hair feel gunky but it does such a good job at holding the style. I find it works best for me in the cooler weather because it is so moisturizing. You can spray a little of that on 2nd day hair to revive your curls too. It does have glycerin but maybe if you're using enough condish and gel this wouldn't be an issue for you? I wonder if your hair is well hydrated if you wouldn't be so glycerin sensitive if it's in small doses?

OK, so just did my hair. First of all, I left way less conditioner than he did; I will try that another time. But I did pretty much everything else the same: raked, towel scrunched then put gel. There is a DEFINITE learning curve with the clip; I will need practice on placing them firmly enough that they dont flop over, as well as where to place them.

Anyway, of course my hair looks NOTHING like it did when he did it, although I really do think I could duplicate it if I leave in a ton of conditioner. Nonetheless, I can see that the cut is a MAJOR improvement over what I had. He really freed up the curls that were getting 'stuck' on each other; my hair flows now instead of sitting there like a mass (hard to explain). It just seems less dense and now looks like "curly hair" instead of "HAIR". And considering I treated what I would consider very roughly, it looks pretty decent. Will have to play more with the new technique and find what does and doesnt work for me. But so far, unless my hair totally explodes, not having to babaysit it when I get out of the shower is a REVELATION!

Anyway, gonna try his clipping for second day hair in the AM; will let you know how that goes!

Glad it turned out well. Did he have any suggestions as to what to actually do with your bangs other than "lose them"? I'm struggling with my half grown out mess of a fringe right now and was just wondering if he actually suggested anything particular.

He took a comb and combed them to the side (but not into the rest of my hair, kind of skimming my forehead, til they were smooth, then he slipped in one or two clips to create some texture as they dried.
It actually was a nice effect, and likely something that would work well not only thru the grow out phase but in the event that I decide to stay with a long side-swept bang. But I simply am not ready to look at myself without my bangs yet. Perhaps in time
