Thinking about heading to the dark side (flat iron)

Oh my lord.
I haven't been on in forever. And while I wasn't an "original" on the boards like a lot of you, I totally missed the curly haired humor you all have.
The reason I haven't been on is I have been highly neglecting my hair. Ever since I went to a salon to get a cut/coloring, I haven't been following a strict CG routine. Sulfates here and there. Cones everywhere. I've been wearing my hair in a ponytail most days since I work at a bakery now.

Anyways.
I co-washed today for the first time in a month or so. I've been using GTTTT's shampoo now for awhile and following up with GVP balm. I haven't really been getting consistent curl, not the way I used to. I use AG Re:coil and that's pretty much it. I haven't been using HESMU since I've been going to bed with wet hair anyways.

I was toying with the idea of buying brand new products and starting out fresh. Getting around $70 worth of stuff at CurlMart (Wen Cleansing Condish/Frizz balm/AG weightless gel/Jessicurl Stimulating Massage Oil.) But it just seems I can't really get the results I want. I already have two full baskets of hair products. I've been leaning more and more towards straightening my hair everyday and I HATE straightening my hair. It's a huge process. But the reliability flattening my hair and having it come out the way I want it to sounds very nice.

I just can't get the curls in my signature anymore, and I know it is partly because my hair has grown out a bit. However, I feel I should be able to still achieve some level of moisture. And at least when I use a flat iron, I get some sort of illusion of that...

My hair now (in my PJ's, sorry lol) :

...What do you ladies think? I'm sort of torn. Even my Mom is yelling at me to flat iron it lately.

you and i joined at roughly the same time, and i remember your hair transformation really well b/c i was so impressed with your before and after. are you trying to grow it out? if not, i would say get a cut and try cg again, b/c your ringlets are absolutely adorable. but if that's not the look you are going for, then flat iron away. just do what makes you happy. but if it were up to me i would vote for starting over and trying cg again.

I mean, I did like my hair short. And to be honest, if I start flat ironing it I'll probably keep it this length:

But that's still longer then I could keep it if I wore it curly I guess. I just got past a really awkward stage that I waited through... it was neither super short nor shoulder length... it looked pretty funky. And now that it's finally past that it decides to quit on me >.>

Hello! I remember, not sure if you remember me. I've been somewhat MIA lately as well. About a month or maybe a bit more, I started down the flat iron route and after following that routine for a couple weeks, it was a lot of time/effort to keep my hair straight, I ended up wearing it in a ponytail everyday just so I could somewhat have it look "straight" but not have to flat iron it, if that makes any sense. Anyway, I've had enough of that...so I'm sort of where you are in your dilemma right now. For the past couple days, I've worn my hair curly, and realized how much I miss them. Here is what I can recommend for you:

1. Clarify - maybe your hair is just not as curly, not because it's longer, but because if you are shampooing/conditioning with products with silicones, they are weighing your curls down.

2. Diffuse - I just discovered (after how many years??) diffusing gives me more uniform curls and my hair dries really quickly.

3. Instead of a ponytail, maybe try some of those flexi-8 clips to put your curly hair back in a twist or something - I've got to do some research myself on these, I know they are a curly favorite, but I haven't tried them myself yet.

Anyway, welcome back! And I hope you find a routine that works for you!

My opinion is that your hair was curlier back then because you were consistently doing the CG routine. I remember you almost going crazy trying to get it down. I remember your transition and you going crazy because of the greasy look.

I am a solid 3b. I mean solid. But using cones pulls curl out of my hair every time. I tried the sally's version of the wen stuff and the amodimethicone pulled out some of my curl. I liked the look because I'd like my hair to be a little less curly but it also dried my hair out some too. It's the cones that are preventing your curl. If you're gonna do CG then do CG. You know it works for you. If it's too much trouble then flat iron it out. It's your hair and you're free to do what you want to it without any judgement from any of us. I still flat iron sometimes when I feel like it. Do what makes you happy and what is easiest for you right now. We'll still love you either way!!!

Then maybe I can have a definitive result- whether my hair just won't get the curl I want with length and I want to flat iron, or if it was just my fall out of routine.

And a variety of clips would probably help ponytail damage... I wear my hair in a ponytail probably 4 days a week.

Then do a good DT with a thick conditioner and maybe add some oil, honey, or both to see if that helps. Let it sit on your hair for a while. You may also need a protein treatment if you've been straightening for a while as the heat may cause damage. I personally think that your curls are much prettier than your straightened hair, but it is ultimately about what makes you feel the most comfortable. For pony tails, try scrunchies instead of the goodie binders.
I was honestly about ready to give up all things CG until I got a little encouragement from the wonderful people here, and now with some more experimenting and determination I'm finally getting my curls back. It's taken about a week of TLC. You can do it.

Annnnd I just got fired. So it's not like I have to worry about the ponytail thing any longer. *Sigh*

So I attempted to relax with my old routine.
I low poo'd with GTTTT/JCHCC half half mix. Conditioned with GVPbalm. Followed Rudee's super soaker method: more GVPbalm as leave-in, nickel sized blob of HESMU and nickel sized blob of Princess Glaze:

I think I was just expecting my old hair, and that's just not going to be the case unless I cut it again. If I'm looking for length, I'm going to have to give a bit.
I'm going to look up some products that focus on volume and try doing some different drying experiments since I just air dried for that.

I haven't tried diffusing with the mod CG routine in quite awhile, so I'm thinking maybe I should try that again like hockeymom pointed out.
OH, and I also have been doing NO deep treatments (thanks crazycurls, forgot about those). I think massaging in the Jessicurl stimulating scalp oil might help me gain some body and some weekly DT's will help me gain some more life into my hair.

Awww... I'm sorry you got fired. That really sucks.

However- remember that your "old hair" took a little while to get there. You've been off your routine for awhile. It will take a little bit of time to get back to it. I wouldn't give up just yet. Personally, I think it looks really good.

Yeah, that's true. I got off track partly because my Aunt is a hair stylist and she seemed to sort of disapprove of my hair tactics... like she could make it better or something. And then when I went they blow dried and straightened it and told me it looked beautiful. So it threw me off a bit. But I'm realizing now that I get way prettier hair doing the CG routine, why I started in the first place. I need to figure out my true hair goals at some point. But I'm smiled at myself again in the mirror today, so yay!

Yeah, totally sucks. I had only been working there a month. And they said I was "too slow"... and I felt like I was just starting to get the hang of everything too. Scrubbed the bathrooms to death, washed tons of baking trays, rang at the registers until my fingers were gonna fall off... *shakes head*

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear about your job. (((hugs)))

If it's any consolation though, I think your hair looks very pretty and healthy. It may not be as curly as it was before but many things could be the reason for that. Hang in there.
