Am I doing CG wrong?

I love many aspects of going CG and am amazed by the results, but there are certain styling techniques that seem to work for so many of you out there that don't seem to work for me. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. For ex: flipping my hair over to scrunch in product, plopping, and scrunching in general seems to break up my curl pattern and cause frizz. Putting product in my hair while it is soaking wet also seems to give me bad hair days. I need to at least squeeze out some moisture with a paper towel before putting product in. Layering leave in condish and gel has also caused problems for me- it leaves my curls less defined and sticky. Maybe I'm using the wrong products?

Last week I did an experiment (well actually two): I tried (1) smoothing product onto my hair with my palms instead of raking it through or scrunching it in (2) used only leave-in condish (a very thick one) and no gel. The leave-in worked like a curl creme.

The results have been better than what I was getting with scrunching in gel. I guess that I should be happy and satisfied with this, but I can't help but wonder if I'd get even better results if was doing the CG styling techniques correctly. Also, am I going to over-condition my hair with all of the condish I'm using? I'm getting second day hair by spraying some water on my hair and adding more conditioner.

Wow- this is really long... sorry guys, and thank you in advance for any thoughts, suggestions, and feedback!

I can't add product to soaking wet hair either. The weight of all that water in my fine-textured hair just pulls out my waves and makes my hair go flat. I do a 5-minute plop with a flour sack towel before adding my gel.

To me, going CG just means getting rid of silicones and sulfates. Everything else is just a matter of experimenting to find out which products and techniques work best for your hair.

No I don't think you are doing it wrong, I agree with Southern Moss it simply means getting rid of silicones and sulfates.

What I am surprised about is how your hair reacts to the many styling methods used by 3b girls, I can't tell but by looking at your picture your hair is sleek shiny and at most wavy, is it straightened? Maybe your hair type has something to do with it.

Also if i didn't have to do many of the differen't techniques to have great hair i would be happy about it. So I guess what I am saying is if you are happy with the way your hair looks without all the fussy styling then consider yourself lucky. putting the product in soaking wet hair is the only way for me to reduce some of the frizz and get some better curl pattern, but if you have little to no frizz to begin with then you don't need to do that, same for the other styling techniques and tip. if you don't need them don't use them. Make Sense? But you wouldn't have known if you never tried them.

Right now I am using GVP conditioning balm for cowash and RO,
my hair loves protein.
for styling my base is BRHG I can use it alone but prefer with Curl Keeper. I sulphate poo once a month or so as needed.

thanks for your feedback on this ladies! glad to know that i'm not doing it wrong. curlyhaze, i am also surprised by how my hair reacts to the styling methods used by most 3b girls. my picture is not a good representation of what my hair looks like anymore. that was back when it was short (the longer my hair gets, the curlier) and i think that i had round brushed the front section/bang area that day. i certainly don't do that anymore! :-) . my curls are 3b with some 3a on the top layers. i'm not particularly satisfied with my hair now, and so many of you beautiful curlies seem to have found a routine that gives you consistently good hair days - i thought that maybe i was missing something. thanks again to both of you for your thoughts and feedback! :-)

Honestly, I totally feel you. There are some product combos that do NOT work for me and leave my hair grimy and sticky.

I've tried raking product through and that seems to loosen my hair up versus when I simply scrunch in curl creme (leave-in). Are you using a spray gel or is it out of a bottle? I know that I personally can't layer gel over leave-in unless it's sprayed on, otherwise my curls look like crap? :'(

It takes time to figure out what your hair likes. Heck, I'm still figuring mine out!
You may need to try some different products. Seems like you know your hair regarding the techniques. Most of us rotate products and don't use the same things every day. I rarely use any one product more then twice a week.

notyouraveragecurl- thank you for suggesting a spray gel! i've been trying to layer my regular gel over my leave-in. do you use a separate spray gel or do you just mix your regular gel with water in a spray bottle? if it is the former, do you have any recommendations?

kathymack- rotating products is another good idea. i've been using the same gel for over 2 years now!

i'm very frustrated with my hair. not only am i growing out a bad cut, but what seems to work one week (ex. conditioner only styling) looks like crap the next. the inconsistency is driving me nuts!

No problem! I use Herbal Essencess Set Me Up spray gel. It's got pretty good hold and it's easy to scrunch out the crunch. Best part its--super cheap!!! Which, of course, is my favorite part about any CG product that works!

I totally feel you on the fact that your hair keeps changing up what it wants though. My hair is testy like that, too. I suspect that when you do co-style only though, your hair gets over conditioned and starts looking like crap after a week which is probably the reason behind the change.

So, if you find something you LOVE and gives you consistent results every time, by all means, stick to it and save a few bucks, ya know? I used the same gel every day for about a year when I first went CG & loved it - the only reason I switched away from it was because of cost.

I LOVE HENNA!
I can't do CG at all. Though I have a lot of hair, it is very fine, and goes VERY flat and gets greasy at the roots if I don't wash every day. Not to mention, my head itches like mad if I don't wash every single day. To be honest, not much about the CG book agreed w/ my hair, and I have had much better luck doing things that are supposed to be bad for my hair!
thanks for all of the feedback ladies. learning about your experiences and your recommendations is really helpful!

i'm so grateful for curltalk and all of its fabulous members!

thanks again :-)
