Post Henna--products not working? Esp. oils?

I henna'd on Sunday. Sunday and Monday I noticed some of my regular products seemed to be making my hair oilier but just thought it was because I was adjusting to the henna.

Today I had to re-do my hair THREE times. I couldn't go to work because of the massive amount of oil just sitting in my hair.

Normally I have normal porosity (leans towards porous). It appears many of my products, mostly those with oils, now just sit on top of my hair. They aren't being absorbed. My hair is not dry so clearly the conditioners are working fine. It is the styling products.

I tried Jessicurl RR and CCSS and it was a disaster! COMPLETE oil field even with just a nickel size of RR and less than a pea size of the CC. So I rewashed my hair and then used just Darcy's Botanicals LI and then gel--another disaster. OIL again. These are all products that worked awesome for me pre-henna

So this time I washed with low poo and then used the Duchess of Curls Enhancer (mostly AVG and a little bit of lavendar oil) and its much better..but still a little oily.

Any ideas about this? I'm pretty stumped and quite bummed as I just ordered a bunch new products (the JC RR and CCSS are brand new) and if I can't use them..YIKES!

I haven't done anything else different. Same condish and co-wash and gel. Can henna change porosity of your hair or has this ever happened to anyone else? I love the color and the strength of my hair..it's a bit thicker as well but this oil thing. UGH!

that is VERY weird. Maybe give it a few days. Nothing like that happened to me
MAYBE CHECK OUT THE henna forum.

Your products are not absobing because now, after the henna, your hair is acting like hair with low porosity since the cuticle layer is sealed tight.

I feel for you since you just bought all those products. You are probably going to have to spend some time developing/discovering a new hair routine. The good thing is that henna is temporary so you will eventually get to use those products you bought as long as you don't re-henna.

Thanks wavy and bela!

I'm going to experiment more with products. I'll just put the ones not working aside. Since my daughter's hair is low porosity we may be able to use some of the same products now. I did put some butter in just now (very little) to kind of provide a mid day boost and that seems o.k.

This is very strange. Maybe it will go back to normal after a period of time. In the meantime all those products are just staring at me!

Also since i use soap/shampoo bars does that mean I do/do not want to do the ACV rinse with them? I can always make my own FSG again as well no problem but I like to have some variety.

This is so weird that no one else's hair seems to be affected like this. I surfed the 4 boards henna post (like 100+ pages!!) and didn't see any mention of it. I wonder why it is affecting me like this.

I have never been able to use oils, but I did notice a change in my porosity with the damaged parts of my hair. The color is permanent, but the seeming effect it has on your porosity does wear off. It lasted a couple of months? I think? Maybe less. I last henna'd in July, and I think I've been fighting this piece again since sometime in Sept. We did my friends hair in August, and she mentioned she started noticing her heat damage again this month.

Just put your faves on a back shelf (out of sunlight!), you'll probably be able to use them again soon.

Oh, and if you're using a soap bar, you'll still wanna use an ACV rinse, because soap bars are very alkaline and you def. want something to bring the pH back down -- thus the ACV rinse.

I did recently read that one of the red-haired curlies (can't remember which one) does henna and it makes her normally porous hair less porous. She's been doing this for some time with this result. It's on one of the porous hair threads in the general forum. If I find it, I'll place the link.

My guess is the soap bars should be good to open up the cuticle to let in some moisture. Then the ACV rinse will help to close it back up. I've never used a soap bar so I can't vouch for this, but based on theory, I don't see why you can't use both. edit: looks like goobernut posted as I was writing. So i guess that's a definite yes to using the acv after the soap bar
