gently removing buildup questions

(x-posted on 2 forum)

I want to remove some polyquat buildup and my regular low poos with cocobetaine don't seem to be doing it. Does anyone have a recommendation for a slightly stronger yet still gentle clarifier?

From reading other threads, it sounds like cocobetaine is the gentlest surfactant, then ammonium laureth sulfates (ALES), then sodium laureth sulfates (SLS) which are pretty harsh.

I'd like to find something a little stronger than cocobetaine but not as harsh as an SLS shampoo. Would a baking soda co wash/ACV rinse do it, or do I need to try a poo with ALES?

Are there any recommended clarifiers? A Sally's version (I'm going later today!)? I heard mention of Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo and Neutrogena Anti Residue Shampoo and Nexxus Aloe Rid: any experiences?

Thanks for your input!

I used the Sally's version of Aloe Rid when I had a problem and wanted to clarify last summer. Followed with a DT and knew I did what I had to do. No issues after that.

ITA with Kathy Nexus is great at getting it done in one shot. I like to follow with one of the CJ tub conditioners. My hair always feels great and not stripped when I do this. Which polyquats are you trying to remove? I found that 7 and 10 come out pretty easily but 11 is a bit more difficult.

Polyquat 10. I was planning to use Lustrasilk Shea Mango as my DT after the clarifying. I hope my local Sally's has the GVP version of Aloe Rid! Thanks for the input!

Update (also x-posted on the 2 forum): I couldn't find the Nexxus Aloe Rid or the Sally's knockoff, so I got the Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo ($4.99 at CVS!), which was okay with me because it had so few ingredients. I also got Lustrasilk OOC and Shea Butter/Cholesterol/Mango ($2.49 ea!).

I felt like an addict when I used the shampoo. The smell! The lather! I told myself I'd just use a little bit and it would be okay.

My hair felt really clean after shampooing with about a quarter-sized blob--not dry or stripped, thankfully.

I put about 3 palms full of Lustrasilk Shea on my hair and let it sit while I did the rest of my routine.

Then I rinsed it out and put in about 3 tbs of LOOC. I smoothed and raked and scrunched until it felt really coated, like it would if I used a styler.

Then I plopped for about 10 minutes, scrunched out some of the wetness, and am air drying.

I'll have to see what happens when I'm fully dry, and what it looks like tomorrow morning, but I feel like my hair is cleaner and softer than it's been in a long time. I'm pretty sure I had some build up and this should take care of it. I'm also going to co-wash instead of low poo for a while to see how that works.

Not to guano your thread, but how do you know when you have a build-up of the polyquats? At this point I have no clue what may or may not build up in my hair. TIA

My hair felt oily and heavy even when I low pooed. It just felt coated. I'm not sure if this is the same for everyone.

Thanks! I'll have to watch for that. Just when I think I'm getting things figured out, I find something else that I need to know...LOL...the adventure in hobby hair continues!
