Help me out guys, I need your opinions since I think everyone else is having more success with this than me! When I spray my hair the small amount of water pretty much just makes it tangle, and after twenty or thirty minutes of letting it sink in the conditioner just feels like it has dried on rather than sunk in, making my hair feel hard. Once the water hits it in the shower it's not too bad, but I'm still not feeling like I'm noticing a difference which leads me to believe I'm doing something wrong. Also, is it not similarly effective to co-wash first to remove build-up (and have the hot water open the cuticle), squeeze out lots of the moisture/wait a few minutes so your hair is just damp, then apply conditioner and let it sink in for half an hour?

If this works better then you should do that. You either need to wet more with your spray bottle with S&C or maybe this just doesn't work for you? It doesn't work for everyone!

I have very porous hair and it dries fast when there's not gel/oils/curl enhancers in it. So, when I'm doing the S&C, I tend to respritz every 10 minutes or so to keep it moist, especially if I do the S&C for longer than 15 minutes, I keep the spray bottle handy.

Yeah this is true...when you spray a section of your hair, does it just absorb the water? It just beads up on mine...

You're low porosity so the beading up makes sense, your hair doesn't absorb readily. I have to spray my crown more then my length because that is my less porous area. I've also done like mircurls and had to re-spray to keep it moist. Without going back and re-reading who it works for I don't know if the low porosity gals are having as much success as the normal & high.

Default try a shower cap

Every morning when I spritz and condish I finish by putting on a shower cap and then wrapping it all up in a flour sack towel turban. This way I don't have any problems with my hair drying during the process.

I don't really understand why, but this technique has basically solved all of my hair problems. No more dry (as in not moisturized) hair - all of my products work better - my hair is healthier than ever - recovery after I get my hair highlighted is so much quicker - my hair looks better than it ever has. I love it! Thank you DEL2C!

I agree with Will's above comment. While S&C doesn't solve all my hair issues, it has immensely helped me have prettier, softer, better conditioned hair. It's made a big, big difference in my fight against insane dryness/porosity. Thanks, Del, for posting about it.

Thanks DEL2C - I don't often post, but I read it all, or most of it anyway It's funny...I actually avoided this thread for awhile because I didn't want to try anything new. I tend to want to do it all! Lesson learned however, because yours is the thread that has made the biggest difference to my hair (and I didn't even have to buy anything new)!

I don't post much, but read often. I found this thread last night and immediately spritzed my hair and applied Aura Cherry Almond bark conditioner, plopped it and slept on it. This morning I simply wet it and then massaged my scalp some and then applied Sebastian Potion 9. I used the same products yesterday (without doing the spritz and condish) and my hair felt dry all day. Today, my hair is the softest it's been in forever!

I was about ready to chop off about 12 inches, but now I'm thinking I don't have to. YAY!!!

If I were to use my Jessicurl HCC or CJ Daily Fix, would I do it after I spritz & condish and then use a leave-in? Would I get the same, moist results?

I also wanted to add that my hair is just past BSL and I didn't have to comb it all all today! Amazing!

Cypressmom; do you have any bigger pics of your hair you could post? It looks lovely in your avatar but too small for detail....

Thank you. My husband wants me to cut it so it will be "easier to manage" but I don't think it's hard to manage, just frustrating to get looking healthy. I feel like it looks dull and dry all the time.

You should see my daughter's hair. It was straight until she was 4 and then she started getting these coarse, tight s-waves. We just cut off 8 inches to donate to Pantene and she has an adorbale bob. Like me, she has issues with her hair being dry and dull looking. A hairdresser once said she needs protein, but I don't know what to use on her. I think that dmost of the products I have are protein free.. maybe that's my/our problem?

I can't say about the JC HCC her products don't work for me. But with Daily Fix I would think you have WAY too much hair to use this method with that cleanser. I like to use Daily Fix with lots of water in the shower rather then use S&C with it. I think you'll waste a lot of product trying to S&C with a cleansing cream & you won't benefit from the lathering and cleansing that the it provides. Your hair is gorgeous btw

Thank you.

So with Daily Fix you need extra water? I was thinking it might be a good option for me because I have hard water, but haven't tried it yet. So if I were to use it, then I would simply follow a "normal" routine.

If I plan of using JCHCC (I do a few times a week) then to S&C before with a conditioner wouldn't be beneficial because I would be then cleansing the moisture of of my hair, correct?

Yes it says so on the bottle, it's very concentrated

I've never used JCHCC, not sure how concentrated it is. I do use DF on my little girl using S&C but she has fine hair and not a lot of it so it works well. If you're going to use JCHCC to S&C it could still work, I just don't know how much extra water you need to get it to "foam" so to speak like you do with DF.

Just to get things clear for me , the big difference in S&C is that you put you co-wash-conditioner on damp and not wet hair?

I do supersoaking since a couple of weeks and love the clumping, but feel I still have an issue with hydration (frizz where hair did not clump and a lot frizz on day 2 when/if the clumping loosens).

So I would like to combine these methods.

If I get it right, I guess the over-head part isn't as crucial as the initial misting. (And I never poo.)

Right?

Default Strengths of Proteins

Quote:
Do you know where I can find out about the "strengths" of proteins? I didn't know oat was a light one. All I knew was that hydrolized tends to be heavier.

hmixon I stumbled on this and thought of you! It's not an extensive list but it's helpful. Of course, product formulation is still key!! I tried LA sports gel a couple weeks ago and my hair was It's hard to say for certain what the culprit was, but it's got a lot of different proteins in it with Keratin at the top of the list. Keratin has been known to give me trouble and it makes sense, it's definitely one of the more "potent" proteins.

Hydrolyzed Keratin Protein – The protein has been broken down so it can penetrate all layers of the hair better and as such is excellent for deep conditioning. It also keeps the hair pliable and strong.

Silk Protein – Silk is the strongest natural fibres and has very small molecules that can penetrate the hair shaft. It is excellent for deep conditioning as it’s known to soften the hair.

Animal Protein – This will generally just coat the hair shaft and repair damage on the outer layers.

Vegetable Protein – This absorbs more easily into the hair without leaving any build up on the hair shaft.

Wheat Protein – Used in many conditioning products, this is a moisturizing and strengthening protein which also improves the hair’s ability to maintain moisture levels.

Collagen Protein – This increases the elasticity of the hair.
