My CG Journey:

I just tried this yesterday and zomg! Amazing!

Coming out of the shower (or any time my hair is saturated) I have *barely* any bend to my hair. And lately, air drying has been a bish because it just stays waved -- I've been feeling like it's just toooooo heavy so it dries almost straight under its own weight. I'd thought I was perhaps over-conditioned, but you can tell by the feel of my hair that such is not the case (I do not think that such could ever be the case :P ).

Figured trying this couldn't hurt, so I did it yesterday. I scrunched in enough water to make my hair damp, but not wet, then applied a generous portion of AOHR and clipped up the back with a big butterfly clip. Worked out, ate breakfast, then hopped in the shower a little over an hour later.

Rinsed in the shower, with light scalp massage, and applied a little more AOHR to the ends, rinsed, and finished shower tasks. By the time I was getting out of the shower, I already had spirals. That has *never* happened. Went immediately into a plop (soaking wet) for 5 minutes while I dressed, and when I removed the t-shirt my hair was dry enough to diffuse. Dried more quickly than ever, and with tons of volume and curling closer to the scalp than ever.

I can't believe how well this worked -- I'm so stoked!

mm interesting! so what is the science behind this that makes it work.. is it because the hair is coated with co before the shower so that water doesnt soak in as much.. i guess i should just try it to see

My assumption was that putting the condish on not-soaked hair allows the moisture from the condish to penetrate the hair shaft. So that when you get into the shower and stick your head under the water, the hair isn't as dry and therefore does not greedily suck in quite so much water.

Whatever the explanation, my hair is lurrrrrrrrving it!
ok i c.. so tomorrow i am soooo going to try this.. tomorrow am and then i will report back.. if i can cut down drying time i will be sooo happy.

ok i tried it today.. it has definitely cut down on drying time.. which is great~! What i did was wet my hair with the sprayer with my homemade lavender spray, the one in the curly girl book..
then put about 2T of that honey suckle rose co.. then my satin bonnet and went back to bed for another 30 mins yay
Then got in the shower cleansed me bod.. then tipped my head over to rinse out the co.. then i added some suave and did the same before realizing i wanted to do a scalp wash with some lo poo.. did that.. then added some more HR For a rinse out again. By this time i was sick of standing with my head upside down and getting a sore neck, plus cold.. brr
got out dripping hair upside down still.. kind of awkward.. then added my gels.. and plopped a few times..
my hair is sooo thick but it dried way quicker than normal.. my hair is a little poofy and some frizzing today but does have curls. all in all i like this technique but hate the upside down thing.
Next time i am going to try it just upright and see if it changes anything.

I did mine right side up because I can't get water in my ears and being upside down in a shower pretty much invites that. So while I can't offer a comparison to what it would be like had I done it all flipped, I can say that it still worked fantastically.
of course you can do this right side up I prefer upside down because I get better root curl this way. I find the less I disturb my natural wave pattern the happier I am with my hair! So, on low poo days my hair isn't as curly because I do it right side up to cleanse my scalp and crown area well.

sorry to post dumb questions but i'm still not 100 per cent sure i've got it right.

so pretty much every second or third wash i use a low-poo. with this method, after you've scrubbed your scalp with low poo in the shower and rinsed it out, is that the end? or do you add more conditioner to the length again and rinse that out?
Well, Del, I just can't believe it. This method, for 4 days straight, has transformed my hair. My hair is not overly porous --a bit on the higher side, but not that high, and this works really, really well. I'm shocked. I've been battling dryness and frizz for about a year now and I could not figure out why because I've been taking better care of my hair now than I ever have before, and it was just getting worse. I tried this or that gel and nothing worked. I decided to try mousse which worked a LOT better for me than gel (Beyond the Zone Noodle Head mousse is AWESOME --it's my HG), but my hair was still dry, especially on the ends. So far, this has changed all that. My hair feels and looks soft --softer than it ever has before. My frizz is GONE --not partly gone, not mostly gone, but completely gone (we'll see what happens in summer). I'm delighted with this method and thank you so much for posting it!

it depends on your hair and whether it feels adequately moisturized.

Also, if I put my hair up and take it down later, it doesn't have any weird bumps in it. It just falls down loosely looking like it was never up to begin with. It's great! Oh --and my hair has this incredible shine and bounce that it hasn't had since I first went CG (I'm modified CG now). Oh, and another thing (okay okay, I'll stop lol), my hair is not expanding much at ALL in humid environments. I work in different environments during the day, and my hair would start expanding the instant it would become more humid, no matter what I put in my hair. Hasn't done that since I started using this method.
Oh gosh, I'm so glad I found this! My hair is super porous, and has been feeling very dry lately. I'm going to try this tonight! I'll post results. Thank you!!!

Funny, I have been doing something like this!
I condition my hair with One C on dry hair, the length. Then I use GTTT poo on my scalp, again, dry. Then I get in the shower. Wet it a bit. Add some more GTTT poo and give it a scrub (my hair requires a lot of the poo to get it clean but I don't really care because it's totally my HG as of late). Then I add MORE One C before rinsing (not only my length I add it everywhere this time). Then rinse and add more condish to length. Then rinse with ice cold water. My hair has been coming out JUST the way I like it. Not SUPER curly, not wavy either. Just a nice soft spiral curl. I've got a pic up on my Fotki, Week 3 album then on page 2.

I'm going to try spritzing some water first though, maybe my ends would soak up more condish and I could use less and have it be more economical.

EDIT: Actually I'll just add my photo here LOL

I just read through the first half of this thread...and I'm wondering if this is why I had such amazing hair last week.

First...I'm very new to CG. I'm a 2a/b and I don't know if my hair is course or porous or anything. My hair's always been soft...probably because I've never permed or dyed or anything, and I've always air-dried. It's also fine and thin (which the curls help hide)...but it does frizz VERY easily.

The only "problems" I have (other than frizz) are split ends (which are right now happening faster than my hair is growing) and flakiness sometimes. I'm wondering if the flakiness is from the conditioner which I discovered yesterday had silicone in it in the form of a -xane. Maybe that's what the flakes are, since I usually leave a little in to help with knots?

Anyway, about my amazing hair last weekend...I've got this older bottle of Herbal Essences "Citrus Lift" detangling spray that seems to be free of all the bad stuff. Last week, when I was wetting down my hair to try to get rid of frizz (and I kept hitting knots), I added some of this stuff to my water bottle. Probably in a ratio somewhere between 1:10 and 1:20. And I used THAT to totally wet down my hair so that I could detangle it.

And I LOVED how my hair dried! Hardly any frizz, and lots of curl and bounce. In fact, this was the best hair of my life.

On the 3rd day, I wasn't going anywhere and didn't really care about how my hair turned out, so I repeated it just to get rid of bed head for hubby...and it was amazing again!

Next day I co-washed normally again...and my hair is back to frizzy. But I haven't used the detangler again. (Didn't think about it.) Now that I've read this thread, I'm putting two and two together and wondering if the water/conditioner mix on dry hair is what my hair loved? I'm also wondering if any of you have tried adding the conditioner directly to your squirt bottle, mixed with the water?

I do have one question, though...which'll show how clueless I am. Some of you talk about your hair being dry for a few days, or something. HOW in the world do you know? What does this look like? I know my hair isn't oily at all, so I think of it as dry, period. It never occurred to me that it might be drier some days than others.

And what does over-conditioned hair look/act like, since some of you wound up with that problem using this method?
Hi...I'm just trying to work out whether this will work for me.

I co-washed for around 3-4 months but it just weighed my hair down.

Since then I have used a small amount of sulphate no-cone poo mixed in with a 'co-wash' which was working well....but now I sort of feel my hair isn't looking great anymore, and the curl/wave pattern is really weakening

So the other day I sprayed with water, then added my co-wash (no poo), scrunched in the ends, and massaged into scalp. I left it on while I shaved, though probably wouldn't leave it on this long normally. Then got in the shower and used a tiny bit of the poo mixed with co-wash and rinsed out.

Hair dryed better than normal....but what I was thinking was maybe just waterwashing it out. I know when I DT I can just water wash it out, even if I had really greasy hair at the beginning.

I just don't know if it will work for me or not....can anyone advise me whether it will or not
Subscribing!

I should try this. Whenever I co-wash, I get a fair amount of buildup, and have started low-pooing a bit. This might just solve my over-conditioning problem...

I love this method more than almost anything, but I think it would add to your over-conditioning problem. I have to be careful to use plenty of protein rich products and I also low-poo everyday which keeps me from getting over-conditioned. This method really keeps my hair moisturized and healthy though - I love it.

I tried this the other night and I think I ended up overconditioned as a result. I used Deva One as my leave-in and maybe I should have used something lighter instead! I may try this again in a while (after my hair stops being so mushy), but this time with a protein conditioner like AOGPB.

Interestingly, my drying time wasn't different the night I did this. And after I rewashed my hair in the morning and then left the house with it still wet, it stayed wet/damp for a loooong time. (An hour-long drive.) I was stunned when I got to the place I was going and still had damp hair!

I had really, really dry hair for awhile this past winter and spring, and this method completely changed my hair and got it healthy and moisturized again. However, within about 2 weeks I was severely overconditioned, but I didn't realize it because that had never happened to me before. By the time I realized what the problem was, my hair was so OC'd that I had to do Nexxus Emergencee PT's every 2 days without doing a DT after. I did that for about a week and a half until my hair felt normal again. Since that time, it took me another 2-3 months to realize (at least for the summer) that I now get VERY easily OC'D to the point where I cannot use any LI at all, and the only rinse-out I can use (and only occasionally) is Lustrasilk Olive Oil Cholesterol. I can use that because it gives me no slip whatsoever --it's a very "grabby" conditioner. If I put condish with slip in my hair, disaster awaits me lol!
2C/3A, fine, higher porosity.
