Spritz and Condish Washing for Porous Types+Thirsty Curls Everywhere!

Sorry in advance for the stupid question; I've read each post over and over, trying to figure out the steps. Does the condition from step 1 (before shower) absorb if I've got loads of stuff in my hair from previous co-wash (LOOC, FSG, gel and some oil from sealing)? I am hoping this technique will be my HG!!

I do have to low poo my length about once a week (or less) if I feel some build up. I low poo my scalp pretty much every wash every 2nd day or so.

Okay so here's another update.

So you all know I tried this method out last night and then slept on my curls...blah blah blah.

When I woke up my curls still felt soft and were defined, so I was happy, but not really surprised because I pineappled and didn't toss and turn that much.

But here's the exciting part

I put my hair into a messy bun all day and just now let it down. Usually after my curls being in a bun all day they are stretched out, less defined, stringy, and have that annoying bump in the middle of the hair (the same thing you get from pony tails and all)

But.......when I put my hair down I got none of the above...they are still curly, very defined, just as clumpy as they were after the shower, and there is no bump!

I am shocked and thrilled to say the least...Del I think you've come up with a winning technique!

goober I forgot that I had told you about this Modifications are usually necessary for each individual. Do you find washing upside down makes any difference for you? I find that it is less "disturbing" to my canopy and keeps my wave pattern better by doing this.

But now that you mention it, I always wash my crown while I'm hanging my head upside down. I do it to get better access to my scalp without getting the conditioned part soapy. Duh, I guess I do partly wash upside down.

Where I focus the first "condition" is on my porous parts -- the color damage, and then don't focus as much on my lower porosity parts. In my experience, my low porosity hair hates oils. It just sits on the outside and weighs my hair down. Makes it limp and nasty. My high porosity hair doesn't much like it either, it makes it feel kinda crispy and rough. My normal hair doesn't much mind either way. I know this isn't the same for everyone, but its how it works on my head heh.

Okay, and to complicate things even more, when I am done rinsing, I'll turn off the shower and inspect my hair (while still upside down) and if its not clumping the way I think it should be, I'll turn on the bath faucet and re-wet until I like it. I usually have the leave-in right there next to the bath faucet lol. I'll scrunch it in, all still upside down, check the clumpage and then move on. If it's getting stringy, or it looks like I need more leave-in, then I add more water etc. No, I don't leave the bath faucet running this whole time.

Rudee, I have noticed this about my own hair -- if I get my hair very wet, and then any styling product (after a regular wash or whatever), as long as its not a hard hold gel, and then air dry while standing up, my hair is less defined and my curl is pulled out. The wetter my hair the increased the effect, because the more water there is, the more it weighs down my hair.

Now conversely, the dryer my hair is when I start diffusing it (or blow drying it), the straighter my hair will be. I have to start diffusing while its sopping wet to get decent volume and wavier waves. And I dont' think it has to do with towel frizz or which towel I'm using, I can do it with a flour sack towel or t-shirt and it works that way.

So I tried this in the a.m. It seemed to work pretty good! I did the dampening and added conditioner right when I got up (5:30AM!) then went to make my coffee and pick out clothes to wear. By 5:40 I'm in the shower. I then co-washed (scalp only) and rinsed it all out.

I got out, still drippy, and added KBB Hair Milk as leave in followed by Pink Boots curl creme (loving this stuff!) and then mixed some Duchess Curl Enhancer with BRHG and smoothed then scrunched everything in. I do everything upside down BTW. I diffused to about 80% and then went to get the kids up (this ends up to be about 6:07AM or so). Did the morning stuff then right before I walked my son to the bus I blow dried it to dry and scrunched. I'm the odd duck that actually uses the blow dryer to SOTC--I do not get frizz and it seems to help me scrunch and keep it from getting stringlety--and then outside to the bus. Came back in and used a bit of QB BRBC and did my final scrunch and voila! Ready to go.

I have hair that has pretty good volume and nice consistent curls. It's a winning combo!

So I did this and got pretty good results. I modified a teeny bit according to what I know my hair needs.

I spritzed until I felt it was wet enough to get properly conditioned. Then I smoothed on OneC down my hair like I would a ponytail. I then scrunched a little extra in the ends to start the clumping. I definitely used much less than I usually do but felt it was enough. I put it in a loose bun and did homework with my son for about 20 min.

When I got in the shower I finger detangled upside down, scrubbed my scalp while upside down, then scrunched to encourage clumps. I really felt like it was easier to massage my scalp upside down so that's a bonus. After finishing the rest of my shower I rinsed my hair upside down with cool water and then proceeded to style as usual.

I have to say I'm really pleased with the results. have much more root volume than usual and tons of good clumps. I don't know if it necessarily cut down on my drying time but soon I'll break out R2D2 and not worry about that anymore. Del thanks for sharing, can't wait to see if it really makes a difference over time. I added pics to my fotki if interested.

CurlayGurlay that's awesome I think this goes back to my theory about the style holding because you didn't absorb as much as water.

goober & Alex you guys didn't notice a shorter drying time? Jess your hair is so pretty I really like the length.

It's possible the finer haired girls may not notice a difference in drying time. Hmmmm....I sure as heck do and it could be because my hair is coarse and so is Jenn.

This way, the water is hitting on the back of my head -- my nape gets rinsed far more than the damaged part this way, and more conditioner gets left on the crown. And no water goes up my nose. I don't have to hold my breath. Which that wouldn't make a difference, because dude, sometimes if you're in the wrong position water will FILL your nose lol.

Yeah the differences are subtle but to us they are very noticeable right?? So the diff. I see from last year is it's laying better & it's not as poofy. It stays defined longer and just holds up better.

Yes, it's minus the poof which allows the wave/curl to show! I absolutely hate my raffia poof and am so self conscious of it.
I love this method!!! I used Duchess of Curls for the 3rd time and with is method, it enhanced by waves like no product has.
I never go without a leave in but this time i did and my hair is great.
I hope this works again tomorrow....

Del, I have a couple of questions about your "Spray n' Wash" method. (do you like the name?) or how about "Spritz n' Swish"?
  1. My favorite surfactant being Behentrimonium Methosulfate it seems to clean better for my hair.
-could you tell me which co you're using? I'm not good with the shortforms so I don't really know what your products listed are.
  2. How much co do you use after you spritz? do you apply to your hair or your scalp or both?
  3. and you don't do a rinse out or a LI?
  4. Can you elaborate a bit about this?
For extra cleansing you would mist your scalp and hair with some Lavender mist and be done.

POPs-I add conditioner from root to tip and it's usually enough for me then I scrub with a little low poo in the Shwr.

How much co do you use after you spritz? do you apply to your hair or your scalp or both?
About a 1/2 dollar amt. I scrub with whatever is left on my hands after spritzing then scrub some more in the shower.
and you don't do a rinse out or a LI?
As a I said somewhere on this thread, I still use a little to rinse out (a teaspoon or so) if needed and I still use a LI.

could you tell me which co you're using? I'm not good with the shortforms so I don't really know what your products listed are.
The Conditioners I use are Curl Junkie tub, LVPNG and Mop Greens. I alternate them the only ones I have with Beth Meth at the moment are CJ. Did you see the Acronyms Sticky by Reddish Rocks? All of the abbrevs. are listed there.

Frizzly you can use the Amts. suggested in the CG handbook as I brought up in my original post. Again, everyone needs to modify this for their own hair.

BTW-Spray N Wash sounds like the Laundry stuff & Spritz N Swish sounds like something you spit out Thanks for the suggestions though! I'm gonna stick to Spritz and Condish cuz it explains exactly what it is.

I tried this out today. I got so much curl in my hair and less frizz in the beginning of the day. I do think I need a better conditioner though since my hair felt dried out once it was dry. The drying time was the same but that could be because of the kccc.

Frizzly realized I didn't answer the Lavender Spritz question. If you don't have the CG handbook you may not know about it but it's just Lavender EO mixed with Water that you can use a tonic for your curls & scalp. You just mist it on whenever you want and you can spritz your scalp for extra cleansing when you Wash. If you do a search you'll come up with references to it I'm sure. It's been posted on the recipes for Hair and Body forum.
