Spritz and Condish Washing for Porous Types+Thirsty Curls Everywhere!

I finally tried this method and I must say that it works pretty good! I spritzed, put in some K-pak and Kenra, had a coffee, showered co-washed the previous out, added a little Garnier Triple Nutrition for a rinse out then carrried on with my usual routine. My hair is just right...not too poofy, not too flat and the curls are nicely defined. Overall, I'd say this worked like a mini DT and I like it! I don't think I could do the 1st part with heavy conditioners each time, but I'm sure a lighter one like Suave Coconut will be just fine since I usually co-wash everyday anyway (never seem to get OC'd). Thanks for the idea Del, I really appreciate it when more experienced curlies share their ideas!

So I tried the spritz/condish method today for the first time. I was concerned that I'd get more frizz, as I tend to frizz easily.

I started by spritzing with water....and my top where I'm extremely porous from highlighting dried almost as soon as I spritzed it LOL. I'm going to try adding a little extra by scrunching with my hands the next time. Added my CJ rehab in Strawberry all over, left in for 10 mins or so. Got in the shower, rinsed upside down, put in CJ h and b deep treat all over and left in for the rest of my shower, rinse upside down. Scrunch out a little water, scrunch in CJ CCCC, CJ AFG, Topped with a little KCCC and a pea size BRHG.

OMG THE CURL!!!!!!! And the softness!!!!! My wurl pattern is very weak at times; it gets blown the wrong way by the wind or if it brushes against my clothing the wrong way it'll go PFFFTTTT quicker than you can say "curly girl". I'm not sure what'll happen once it's completly dry as I diffuse to about 90% and let it air dry again. I will need to use something to SOTC probably....and that tends to mean the curls get looser and weaker. We'll see though......but if every day looked like this I'd be a happy camper. But you know curly/wurly/wavy hair.....every day it looks DIFFERENT!!!!

I have been doing a nearly identical technique with great success. It really makes a difference if you are porous. Thanks for posting the technique in such detail, Del!

So what are we calling this technique?

Thanks for the updates girls. It still seems that the porous heads are the ones benefiting the most but I'm glad others have tried it too. I'm no genius but I appreciate the sentiment. Oh and Peaches you were clear as could be!!

can i just check i have this right? first you spritz hair with water only. then add condish and leave it in for however long. jump in the shower. Then (this is the part i'm not sure about) add co wash to the scalp and scrub. Then rinse all of it out?? Also after spritzing with water do you add the condish root to tip? or leave out the roots?

So today I used different products (it's salon product day LOL) for my regimine. I used Aura Cherry Bark condish scrunched in after spritzing (SOMETHING must'a changed from this.....it didn't dry quite so fast on the top after spritzing today) left in about 10 mins. Then I got in the shower, added some water like they tell you to do with Wen and scrubbed, rinsed, conditioned with my CJ H and B deep treat, left in the rest of my shower, rinsed, used Biotera curl creme scrunched in topped with BRHG scrunched. Then plopped, took down and it's air drying. I'll diffuse later, but the wave formation, enhancement, and frizz are different today. I didn't get as much wave enhancement and the frizz is up. Then I realized......I didn't rinse upside down either. Go figure. I'll remember tomorrow!

THANKS curlyjenn!!! I was hoping you'd weigh in with current stats msg inspired me over the Summer because my hair was taking a BEATING going to the Beach and getting wet constantly. She mentioned that she would coat her hair with condish before heading to the water. I started doing this and then just continued because it seemed to work really well. I definitely agree that it does something to prevent us porous heads from absorbing too much water and we get better conditioning.

curlyjenn10, in your blog you mentioned getting dry after a protein treatment...would you mind elaborating on that? I'm having some dryness issues after a protein treatment and have done LOTS of DT/CO'ing/oils to no avail...going to try a conditioning PT today to eliminate that possibility. I tried this method this week and loved it... until I over conditioned ! I did a sulfate shampoo (yuck!) and will have to try putting less condish in my hair... I always seem to put way too much. But this could be working.

How often do you use protein? It is always possible to overdo it, even if your hair normally loves protein.

My porosity seemed to change with that last PT, and I've struggled since to find a way to get moisture either into the hair, or to stay in the hair. Figuring I had nothing to lose I tried this method since it made since to use a small amount of water on my hair to change up the gradient and see if my hair would suck in more CO instead. But it didn't seem to happen and I don't know why! The first day was like any other day but my hair dried more quickly (a plus once I get a job). As days went by, my hair got drier and drier. 1st I am going to apologize for the tome I am about to write. I've been waiting to respond about the spritz and condish until I tried it several times. So I've done this 3 times in the last 4 days. (I did not S&C for 1 day to see if I would get 2nd day hair.) Let me preface, for those who don't know, that I have extremely difficult and unusual hair. It is mid back length & a mix of textures (which I think is due to my mixed heritage--I only say this in case it might help others who are biracial). My hair is fine, medium/normal, medium-coarse, and coarse. My porosity is high due to hair damage and possibly genes. I also have a mix of curl pattern, 3a waves (now some 2c waves) and 3b ringlets. I have tons of frizz--frizzy when wet, dry, surface, in between the curl, and new growth (hair that sticks straight out and won't lie flat on the canopy). So here are the results.

Day 1: I spritzed, put in 2 quarters of condish, one on the left side, one on the right side), plus a little extra on the ends as my hair is very dry. Waited 20 minutes. In the shower I wet hair slightly, added cleansing creme on scalp/roots only. Completed other shower business. flipped upside down, detangled with fingers and noticed this was causing tons of frizz. So I grabbed the comb and gently dentangled. Hair was a smooth sheet that formed clumps. Rinsed completely. Gently scrunched a little condish on the ends. Got of shower. Scrunched in LI and FSG. When my hair dried it had 50% less frizz and tons of volume with lovely bouncy curls.

Day 2: did the same as above excepted dried under my new R2D2 ion hard hat dryer (which I will post a review of on that thread). Results: Same as above except I now had 70% less frizz. No surface frizz. Still a little between the curls frizz (which I attribute to the different curl patterns) and the new growth frizz (which can't be helped). I was very pleased.

Day 3: tried to get 2nd day hair. NO LUCK. I believe my weird hair will never get 2nd day hair.

Day 4: same as day 2 with same results.

Conclusion: I will continue the spritz & condish as I feel my hair is more moisturized and absorbs less water this way. It also seems to cut down my frizz a lot. Even though I did not get the perfect results that other porous curlies did, I still like this routine a lot.

Thanks Del for Spritz & Condish and R2D2 (my new baby

WavyLN-if you go back to my original post you'll see how much condish is recommended in the CG Handbook. This is a good place to start so you don't use too much. It's better to have to add more because you can't take away what you've put in!! Give it another try!

I've tried it a couple of times now. It definitely helps with the dryness and frizz. I've found that if I don't add enough water it's not quite as effective, but when I add the right amount it definitely does cut down on the drying time.

Today I did a variation.

I forgot to spritz and condish before getting in the shower LOL....so I scrunched some water in my hair with my hands, added my elucence condish, left in a few, used elucence shampoo on my scalp only, added a little water like they tell you to do with Wen, and scrubbed. Rinsed upside down, used my CJ H and B deep treat, left in the rest of my shower, rinsed upside down, used CJCALI and DM Miracurls gelly and a little BRHG for hold. We'll see how it holds up today.

I've been doing a variation of this since last week. I have porous hair and have been worried about hair swelling, ever since I read about it on the Natural Haven.
Normally I wet my hair completely every day, then condition, detangle and rinse. I only wash my hair once a week (co-wash or low-poo), so I've been using this method to do my daily conditioning.

I spritz my hair, rake/smooth in my rinse-out conditioner, spritz some more. Let it sit for ten minutes. Then I detangle with my denman. After detangling I rinse out the conditioner upside down with cold water. I catch some drippies with a microfiber towel. (I hate drippies)

I rake through my leave-in and/or stylers. I may spritz some more, especially if I'm using a curl cream. Sometimes I'll use my denman again to help distribute products and encourage clumping, depending on how my hair looks. Then I either diffuse or airdry.

The results: My hair is definitely drying faster and is looking good. I will continue to use this method and hope to see some more improvement, now that I'm using less water.
In winter it normally takes me +6 hours to airdry. My hair is now completely dry in about 4 hours. If I diffuse (for about 15 minutes), it takes me about 2 hours and my hair is completely dry.

Thanks for sharing this method, Del!
