In my family, we don't give gifts to grown ups anymore. Originally, we picked a charity and all gave to the same one. Now, we each give to charity of our choice. It happens for holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

When they were re-doing Ellis Island years ago, I gave the foundation a donation and bought one of the plaques (for immigrants) in my family's name. When the first phase of renovation was finished my sister and I took my parents there to see it.
For my parents' 50th wedding anniversary I 'bought' them a star. They thought that was the coolest thing ever.

This Christmas my husband and I decided not to buy gifts for the adults in our very large families. Instead we will be making a sizeable donation to Horizon International (I know one of the people who run this organization so it is legit) to purchase item/items of our choice for the orphans in Africa. They need things like protein sources (chickens, goats, cows), water storage, blankets, mosquito nets, school supplies, etc. We will then give everyone a Christmas Card letting them know that a donation was made on their behalf.
