Default Protein or Moisture?

hello all!

I've been CG since last Friday, I'm still a bit confused as to how to tell whether my hair needs protein or moisture, I know that it needs a balance between the two but how do I know if its lacking in protein?

So this is what I was thinking of doing tonight -

- egg yolk mask - 2 egg yolks with EVOO leave it on for bout half an hour

- bicarbonate of soda wash (2tbsp of bicarb mixed in with my co wash?)

Deep condition with Naked Shine Glossing Hair Treatment (these are the Ingredients: Aqua, Cetearyl alcohol, Brassicamidopropyl dimethylamine, Glycerin, Cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, Dicaprylyl carbonate, Butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), Aspartic acid, Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, Dicaprylyl ether, Lauryl alcohol, Parfum, Panthenol, Jojoba wax PEG-120 esters, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Citric acid, Limonene, Benzyl benzoate, Hexyl cinnamal, Linalool.)

Then a Cider Vinegar rinse - 1/2 cup of cider vinegar with 2 cups water?

Is that enough or too much? Do you think this will give my hair a protein boost if it needs it and rebalance it okay?
Do my measurements sound okay?

I'd really like to give my hair a boost as its been through a lot recently and I'm pretty new to the CG method and using natural ingredients.

Thank you for any advice

Hello,

I agree that it's difficult to tell which one your hair really needs so I'm sorry I can't help you with that one. However, your plan for tonight sounds good...I've done the same before (minus the baking soda b/c) but I think that's too much cider vinegar. From what I've learned on this site and what I've done you only need 1Tbsp per cup of water. So I usually just do 2 Tbsp ACV in 2 cups of water.

I hope that helps!

Thank you so much for your reply!

Okay I'll lessen the cider vinegar thank you for that

I also forgot to add that I bought some 100% coconut oil from a local whole foods store and wondered whether it was worth adding that into the mix somewhere along the way?

Was there any reason in particular you dont do the baking soda wash?

At the moment the products I'm using in my hair are Trevor Sorbie Curl Cream and Boots pink curl cream (only used it today for the first time though!)

No problem! I love coconut oil & I like to add it to my DT or PT. I also rub a little in my palms before I scrunch out the crunch. Makes my ends extra soft & shiny!

I didn't like the baking soda b/c although I followed with condish & ACV rinse, my hair was very frizzy for days! Idk what/if I did wrong but I have repeated everything else w/o a problem so I have not tried a baking soda wash again.

Another great PT I just tried this weekend was a can of coconut milk & 1 tsp of liquid aminos. It's best to heat the coco milk for a couple mins so it's already warm & it ends up being less messy. Saturate your dry hair with this combo, put on a plastic cap & let sit for 30 mins. Rinse it out, co-wash and/or condition and style as usual. My hair was moisturized, curlier & very soft.

You can learn fairly easily whether your hair needs moisture and protein.

Read this post, and follow the link in the post. The post has pics of what too much and too little protein look like if that helps too. You do have to follow the link inside the post though since it has a lot of detail.

That's a great article redcelticcurl! Thanks a lot!
How often would you do PT? As needed, weekly, monthly?
My hair reacts really well to PT's but I feel like I only see the results (bouncier & more defined curls) the day of and maybe the day after.

Thanks!

I use protein more often in the summer than in winter.

In the summer I can use a treatment once a week.

In the winter, I need more moisture and less protein.

My hair is medium-coarse, and if yours is medium, you may tolerate more protein than I can, and finer hair should tolerate even more.

Usually one just has to use it until they notice protein induced dryness so that they find their tolerance level.

Thank you so much for you your replies! Sorry for taking so long to reply!! They are really helpful and I erad through that article although thinkl ill need to reread a few times before it sinks in, I experimented lastnight but think because I put the coconut oil n with the egg the oil would have stopped the protein absorbing? As I was trynig to do a protein mask but think ive gone wrong?!

Okay, I do *think* I need protein but I cant seem to find Nexxus Emergencee ANYWHERE (local Sallys doesnít supply it) so thought the Redken Cat treatment is the next best thing, so am going to hopefully try that, I put a hair mask on last night that I made myself before reading your replies:

Avocado
Egg yolk
Olive oil
Coconut oil

I may have overdone it on the coconut oil though as my hair is not feeling so good today pretty limp and feels quite dry on the ends, plus my scalp is feeling itchy as hell! : (

Okay went out at lunch and couldnít get the redken cat treatment so not sure what to do now, do you think it was the coconut oil thatís done this?

I also slept with the Naked Glossing conditioner in with a plastic bag over my head so maybe had conditioner on for too long? I dunno but not liking my hair today so have pulled it back, also there was a lot of hair coming out this mornign in the shower considering I did all that rinsing through last night though I checked a few strands and they had the white buld on the end so are out from the root so could be normal shedding I donít know?

This itching is driving me crazy!

sorry that reply was prob a bit garbled as trying to type quick as on lunch but in a nutshell last night I:

Washed hair with Bicarbonate of Soda

Mixed together 1 egg yolk, tablespoon of EVOO, and prob about 4 tablespoons of Coconut oil, plus 1 mashed Avocado, whisked it all together put it on my wet hair and put a plastic bag over my head and left it on for about 2 hours (got carried away on the laptop)

Rinsed it out with Schwarzkopf pomegranate conditioner

Put Naked Shine Glossing hair treatment conditioner on plus a bit of the schwarzkopf one, put a plastic bag and towel over my head and went to bed

Woke up this morning rinsed it all out then did a final rinse with ACV then a cold rinse then scrunched some of the pomegranate cond and Boots pink curl cream in.

Hope thats bit clearer

Do you think Ive over conditioned?
