I do a little combo of both. I rake gently and not even all the way through -- I just try to get product a little closer to the roots than plain old scrunching can accomplish. I stay away from the scalp but I get pretty close. It works well for me.

I cannot get even coverage by scrunching in products, and I feel like it just creates frizz for me. I either rake them in or smooth them on. I scrunch after I've applied them all.

+ 1 with the combo approach, especially with gels. I know they don't distribute well with scrunching only. Something else that helps is keeping your hands wet (like when you make meatballs.) I run them under a little running water, so they are wet--but don't cup my hand and add tons of water.

I rake product through my hair; there's no way scrunching is going to get product evenly distributed through all my hair. I may try scrunching after though and see if I can get better clumps that way instead of all these little pieces.

I rake and smooth gel in, then scrunch.

That's me..sort of. I don't do too much raking (can give me stringlet's depending on product)--I mostly smooth it in and then scrunch it in. I'm with Kathymack that wet hands do help. I mix BRHG and other gels with AOMM to help distribute easier. Like Jillipoo I avoid direct scalp contact (every time I rake it ends up on my scalp and invariably I get itchies) as my scalp is sensitive.
I don't like the Deva scrunch a little and leave it-recipe for straight hair for me
I don't like the other rake and shake either--yucky stringlet ramen noodle curls that way
So I'd say I don't really like either.
Let's call it Kat-Gem-Boom-Jilli ... that has a nice beat to it!

This is me. Rake to evenly distribute, then scrunch.

Thanks, Kathy. I've been having a really bad day and the combo of hair products and meatballs struck me as hilarious... I really needed a good laugh!
Sorry for the interruption, all...
