Can a water softener effect hair

When we originally installed our water softener, I thought one of the added benefits would be an improvement to the look and feel of hair. (not the reason we installed it though)
However, I am now wondering if it is actually having a negative effect on my hair. No one else in my family has curly hair or fusses with their hair as much as I do, so I'd be the only one to notice this!
It seems like products that I used to like don't work since we started using the softener, and my hair seems harder to manage.

Just wondering if anyone else ever experienced this?
I found the opposite to be true for my hair. I have coarse hair and I noticed that my hair was just looking dull, dry and brittle with the hard water because of the build-up. Everyone's hair is different so maybe one of the other curlies here has experienced what you're experiencing with soft water. Hopefully someone will be able to help you - good luck!
I always noticed that the products I used when I had softer water didn't work when I had hard water....you may just want to find products that work with the softer water. I "loved" Devacurl One Condition yrs ago when I had softer water and always noticed for some reason it didn't work with hard water.
3a/b medium/coarse but mostly moderately coarse, dense, strong strands
Komaza analysis current: medium to thick/ strands(mostly coarse), very strong elasticity, low porosity(some is), healthy strong hair
Goosefootprints: moderately coarse with some medium; low porosity at roots, normal thru shaft, porous ends.
LCLF:medium,normal,normal
I posted this on GettinControl's thread but I meant to post it here!

This is an interesting article

it mentions how having soft water can cause issues for our hair just like hard water does. I get build up from the salt used in my water softener, so I have to use a clarifying POO once in a while to combat the effect. If I wash my hair in a hard water I get a temporary curl boost which is kinda fun I've also noticed that the scents from my shampoo & conditioners don't linger AT ALL which is kind of a bummer. I've had my water softener longer then I've been CG so I can't offer any product suggestions. You just may have to clarify more often.

Since it seem like my city doesn't have hard water, someone suggested it might be a salt buildup? But I don't know the symptoms of it, nor do I know what is building up on my cup in the picture in that thread (COULD it be salt?). Whatever it is, it works fast. I really want to figure out how to get it out of my hair without having to shampoo twice a week, so your description of your symptoms of it might be helpful.
