Question..I have a Pretty big sore on my scalp..

I have been cg for a little over 1 month now and am finally starting to see real good results.
Before going cg i had a dry flaky scalp on top of my dry frizzy curly hair. i can honestly say my hair has never looked more soft and healthy in all my life, and my scalp is almost completly flakeless (if that is even a word) it just feels very healthy also.

anyways about 4 or 5 days ago i noticed a sore in my hairline kinda above my right temple about 1/4 inch wide and it has a big scab over it. I will admit i was kinda picking at it the first couple days , but it is so painful and i knew it wouldent heal till i stoped so i did. i have been cleaning my scalp like normal and when i get to that area i just gently rub it and it is not getting any better. the scab is not getting smaller or anything. has anyone ever had this problem? what i am using is in my siggy, but i kinda dont feel like its that. im thinking a clogged pore?!?!?any advise would be much appriciated!!

Hi nicolewoods1,

My daughter tends to have a flaky scalp and she also gets small pinkish/red sores. I have taken her to a dermatologist, and she said that it is eczema. My daughter has had eczema since she was born (she is a teenager now), but it seems to get worse in the warmer months. It also gets bad if she is in the sun without a hat on.

Is your sore pinkish/red? The last time we went to the doctor, she gave her a prescription for Beta-Val (a clear liquid that she puts on the sores). A few times/month she also uses Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Hair and Scalp Treatment. The sores seem to come and go.

Have you ever had this before?
Hair Type - wavy/curly, fine texture, thin/medium density
I get places like that with my seborrheic dermatitis, too. Psoriasis can also cause them. This is why I can't go strictly CG and have to low-poo occasionally with Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo - much better results than with Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo, which is undesirable to most because it contains sulfates, unless it's recently been reformulated. My hair just otherwise prefers the natural ingredients in the Giovanni, too.

And when I co-wash, I use the matching conditioner, applying it and working it into my scalp for several minutes before ever getting into the shower. I leave it on for 10-15 minutes when I have time.
2C/3A/3B - modified CG - fairly fine now, normal/low porosity/normal elasticity

Current Main Rotation: MG217 medicated or Aim2Health 'poos for scalp, Elucence cond., Spiral Solutions Protein & Deeply Decadent Cond., CJCCCC reg or lite,CJ Pattern Pusha,, Giovanni LA Hold Hair Spritz + lots more, sporadically

HG Method: Super Soaker + Smasters-ing, brief upside down diffusing w/360o diffuser then clips/clamps & air dry. Newly gray - stopped my henna glosses!

I get sores like that too on my scalp sometimes. I also can't just cowash or else I end up getting sores, no matter what conditioner I use. Anyway, I also recommend the Giovanni TTTT shampoo! It has really helped and is quite gentle. You also might want to look into getting some straight tea tree oil. I either apply it straight to the sores or mix it with some jojoba oil and massage my scalp with it, which does seem to help!
Somewhere between a 2b/c and a 3a

Thanks ladies,
anniemae~ my daughters have eczema also. my eldest has it pretty bad but as she has gotten older we see less and less of it. I dont have it though (as far as i know ) i do tend to have sensitive skin though..like i have rosacea and i burn easy. its just funny cause since going cg my scalp has gotten better, then this happens.
it is not red it has a white thick scab over it (sorry if im grossing anyone out) when i did pick at it (the first couple days) it dident "bleed" it was just a little bit of clear fluid.
Anyways i think im just gonna do like you ladies suggested and instead of using giovanni 50/50 im going to get the TTTT. I only low poo like 2 times a month (at least that is what i did this past month) so hopefully that will help. Thanks again for the advise and support i appreciate it!!!

I have roseacea and sensitive skin, too - all of these problems seem pretty common in curlies of Celtic descent. Does that fit you, too?

Anyway, if you find low-pooing a couple of times a month not to be enough, try co-washing w/the GTTTT conditioner, too.

i used to get occasional long-lasting sores on my scalp and I came to realize that I just wasn't cleaning my scalp often enough.

With co-washing I was no longer getting oily or itchy so I thought I could go for 7 days w/o washing or rinsing my scalp.

Now I co-wash or lo-poo or water rinse every 3-4 days even if my hair doesn't seem dirty. It's the scalp more than the hair that needs to have all the congesting materials like old sloughed-off skin cells; dried product residue and the general air pollution particles and chemicals that settle on our heads throughout the day removed so that it can breathe.

Ever since I've refreshed my scalp on this time schedule, I've not had any of these sores develop. My scalp was choking and was screaming to breath and could only tell me by sending out the sores as a distress signal.

Also, you could be experiencing a transition from shampoo to co-washing since you've been doing this for about only 1 month. If you keep it up, things will get better.

I have two of these ... it's from my seborrheic dermatitis originally, but I'm a picker. If you leave it alone, it should go away, or you'll end up with bald spots like me :/

My ex-husband used to get infected follicles sometimes on his scalp, and he would not leave them alone--they DID result in bald patches! The hair eventually grew back, but it took several months or even years in some cases.

I agree about washing the scalp more often. If I go more than 4 days, I usually really start having problems. I have to cleanse and scrub it well, whether by low-pooing or co-washing pretty regularly to keep it in check. I do best to go 3 days usually. I used to think going longer was giving it a break from shampoos, styling, etc., especially when I still used sulfates, but I finally learned differently.

I think that is my problem, when i was using sulfates it dried my hair out so bad i only washed it once a week. so im relizing now that my scalp is the one that needs the attention and it needs to be cleaned 2 to 3 times a week. it just feels odd cleaning my scalp that often all of the sudden.. go figure!!

To relieve the pain and also heal the sore faster i also reccomend the tea tree EO mixed with oil and massage. Also If you do ACV rinses you can add the Tea Tree Oil just a few drops to your ACV rinse for maintanence.

Best thing I have found for it, hope you try it and I hope it works.
Very Thick dry 3b BSL.
Fine, medium porosity
Right now I am using GVP conditioning balm for cowash and RO,
my hair loves protein.
for styling my base is BRHG I can use it alone but prefer with Curl Keeper. I sulphate poo once a month or so as needed.
