random dryness and breakage?

I've been CG for quite some time. And now all of a sudden my hair has been breaking as if I've been flat ironing it! It's been really dry and it snaps when I pull it without even stretching a little.
Is this because of too much protein???
I've been trying to lay off it and just deep treat with my mix of cholesterol shea butter and coconut oil. But same thing. Terrible, dry, dull, brittle, breaking hair.
It's also frizzy all the time even when it's wet!

I'm scared to keep adding moisture since it seems to only be making it worse.

Anyone else go through the same thing while being CG?

PS:
This all started after using Re:coil. Needless to say I stopped using that.
Which Re:coil product did you use? I am not familiar with them. (So I could check ingredients)
Also, how often do you use protien?

I found this on a website:

The Advantages of Protein Treatments
Using a protein treatment on your hair has many advantages. The first is that it strengthens your hair. If you have weak, brittle hair, the right protein treatment can fix this issue. Another advantage is that by strengthening your hair, it also makes the hair a lot softer and smoother. Yet another advantage of protein treatments is that they can make your hair fuller and healthier than before.
The Disadvantages of Protein Treatments
There are so many advantages to protein treatments that you wouldn’t think there is anything bad about them. Well, this is pretty true. The only disadvantage to using protein treatments is that if you use them too much, it can destroy your hair. That’s because overusing protein can dry out and cause the hair to crack. As long as you don’t overuse protein hair treatments, this isn’t cause for concern.

I used the AG re:coil curl activator. I loved it at first. But then after a while it just became so dry. I went crazy with protein for a while. I did way too many treatments. So then I stopped using proteins in all my conditioners. But I still had some in my styling and leave in products. But my hair just seems to be getting worse and worse. I tried deep treating with something that was recommended by a friend. (it wasn't CG but I tried it anyway) And my hair just got even worse. I'm just a big puff of brittle hair. >_< Please help meeeee.

Should I ditch the protein in everything for now?
Hi recoil has a lot of mag sulph in it which is drying. I wouldn't use any more protein just now - if you're unsure, err on the side of moisture.

Oh wow thanks. I think that might be it. Do you have any recommendation for nice protein free hydrating leave ins and stylers?

I'm going go out and buy some new stuff.
That article helped a lot. But on her product recommendations I was confused about the leave-ins. Were those for protein??
I'm guessing this also means no mousse?
Also - the treatment that you used that wasn't CG. Did it have silicones in it? If so - did you claify afterwards to remove the cones. If not this could also be part of your problem. You'd need to remove the silicones to get some moisture back into your hair. And keep doing the deep treatments (moisturizing not protien).

I have the same issues with protein; I need it to keep my hair strong and healthy since it's so brittle and prone to breakage, so I do the Aphogee 2 step every 6 weeks, but as far as using products on a regular basis that contains proteins...MY HAIR AINT HAVIN' IT!

I try to use heavy moisturizers and moisturizing conditioners that are all protein free. I do still use CJ's H&B Deep Fix as a deep treatment about 3 weeks after I've done the regular protein treatment to make sure I still have some protein.

I recently purchased Darcy's Botanicals' Deep Mask, which is really moisturizing. It has excellent slip and contains NO protein.

I like to use KBB's Hair Mask once a month which works really well like Darcy's Mask, it doesn't have protein either; neither does her hair milk (good moisturizing product).

Also, Qhemet Biologics' Amla & Olive Heavy Cream is a very moisturizing hair cream...I really like this product that's protein free!

These are all the things I like to use since I know that my hair is protein-sensitive...give some of them a try, I think you'll be pleased!

CURL JUNKIE ZOMBIE !!!
Tinah, after the not so cg deep treatment I shampooed with mane n tale. (Which I just noticed has protein! have to stop using that) Would that clarify my hair? Or do I need to get a clarifying shampoo?

Ah thanks for the list Versace. I'm definitely going to order some of those! Looking at your avatar. Your hair looks really similar to mine!
Do you happen to know any good products I could get locally like from vitamin shoppe or whole foods? I'm going to go visit my mother out of the country so I need something I can get quick. If I show up with dried up hair she'll make sure to comment on it non stop...
