Question Why does my Wave Nouveau look so much like a Jheri Curl?

I got the Wave Nouveau with the hopes that it would make my hair long and wavy. But it looks more like a Jheri Curl.

And I hate it when people say its a Jheri Curl.

I read around in some sites and people were saying how their Wave Nouveau looked nothing like a Jheri Curl.

Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Here are some pics:

Whats the deal with this?

Or is this the way its supposed to look?

Maybe it is the cut and the way you are styling it? It does look retro.

I never saw the difference between a wave nouveau and jherri curl, except the latter looked tighter.

But what products are you using? What texture is your hair?

You might be using too much product in your hair, giving it that gloopy J-curl look. Try using as little of the recommended products as you can get away with.

Back in the day (early 90s) I had a Wave Nouveau. As far as I know, it is just a different type of J-curl (and yes, I had one of those too before the WN).

I hate producty hair and always used as little of the activator etc. as I could get away with. I like hair that can be touched without you wanting to wash/wipe your hands.

Good luck!

omg you guys just brought me back! I remember the days you had to check the bus seats before you leaned back to make sure there wasn't a grease spot on it!

Can't see your pics. Wave Nouveau is really the same as a Jheri Curl, same chemical and you have to form the hair on rods. and it dries out your hair something fierce.

I think I know what the problem is. I was using an afro pics to comb my hair instead of a wide tooth comb.

Could that be the problem?

What look are you trying to achieve?

IMO, the thing that is giving off the Jheri curl vibes is that "wet" look, which is not going to be helped by how you comb your hair, but by how much product you use.

I agree I don't think it looks bad if thats the look you want. It does remind me of the late 80's early 90's but then again I think some of that might just be the sunglasses . Perhaps try investing in a more modern pair and that may change your look a bit too. I don't know much about Jheri curls except that people used to think my nautral hair was one, but in general I'd say when it comes to products less is more.
