protein buildup, how do I get rid of it?

Yes, I already did a thread search and have read, read read. Just gimme an answer. My hair is a wreck. I'm ready to shave it off or cry or both.

Do I do an ACV rinse or something or just ditch all things protein containing? Does KCCC have protein in it?

Stupid hair.

I'm still new, but I think you just avoid protein, and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.

I'm not sure about KCCC, so I can't help you there.

KCCC doesn't have protein. Do you mean a reaction to protein?? Never heard of protein "build up." If it's a reaction to protein, Magoo's advice is totally correct. If you have a build up problem with other ingredients, you'd want to clarify--first with low poo, then with sulfate if you still have issues.

Okay, in my reading last night, I read that protein can build up. I guess I read erroneous material?

Regardless....my hair is damaged. Straw like. Dry as a bone. Crunchy. It's HORRIBLE. I've been using a lot of protein containing products, and one protein-heavy CO (VO5 moisture milks) for my cowash, and my hair is just FRIED. Omg. I stupidly convinced myself these past couple of weeks that my hair is just especially dry because it's winter, that it's not the protein, blah blah blah. I did deep treatments (even the homemade ones with avocado and all that stuff), I eliminated glycerin, I did everything BUT eliminate protein, but my hair was still like a bale of hay on my head. Well, I got my hair cut yesterday in an effort to revitalize my (formerly lovely) curl pattern, and my stylist was horrified at the condition of my hair.

I couldn't deny it any more. I read RCC's blog entry about protein damage, and my hair is just like hers was, to a t. Even the pictures are almost exactly alike:

http://pittsburghcurly.wordpress.com/tag/protein/

So I went through my products yesterday and ditched all the protein. Sigh. I only have *2* protein free conditioners in this house, so I have to go shopping today.

I read GVP Conditioning Balm's label 3 times to be sure, and it doesn't appear to have any protein. Is that correct? Please tell me it is. I think I'll cry if it has protein. Anyway, I cowashed with protein free suave last night, then did an ACV rinse, then did a DT with some warmed GVP. My hair is MUCH happier already.

I'm planning on picking up some AOHR, GVP, Suave, and lustrasilk today. Sound like a plan?

I don't remember anyone discussing protein "build up"--just sensitivity or bad reactions to it. My hair loves protein and I can't use too much.

Sounds like you are on the way to recovery and have a plan. I wouldn't totally give up on protein, even rcc uses it on occasion. She's experimented and found what she can use on the odd occasion her hair needs it. Why don't you stay away from it until you feel that your hair has recovered and then introduce a little bit when your hair seems "flat?" You may discover what your hair likes and what it doesn't.

I'm scared of protein now. I'm sorry I'm so snippy, btw. My hair is just trashed, and I'm really p.o.ed about it. I don't mean to sound nasty towards you all (above posters), and I appreciate your help and input. I had such a nice curl pattern for a long time, and felt like I had *finally* figured out my hair after a year of this CG trial and error thing, then my hair just went to crap. Ugh. I just want to cry. My hair was pretty. Now it looks ick. Not as ick as yesterday, but still ick. And there are all these short, frizzy little hairs on the top of my head, so I *know* now that my hair has been breaking. It makes me want to just heave. My beautiful hair, that I finally made peace with and loved, BREAKING!

It's just so distressing.

My hair isnt that big on protien but I still will do a protien DT followed by a moisturising one and I usually do okay. So I wouldnt ditch it totally. Your hair will come back with a little TLC dont worry

Hello Finch,

I'm sorry you are having such a hard time right now. As you can see from the blog post, I've been there.

In my first year of CG, I had terrible issues with protein. I went about 9 months totally protein free, although I probably could have gotten by with 6 months.

I would get rid of it totally if you are having problems with breakage and if you hair is looking like my hair pic of ODing on protein. I would also use whatever the most moisturizing thing is that your hair likes. I know some react badly to the AOHR, but it really got me through protein overload recovery. I would also recommend the Curl Rehab if you are OK with aloe. Jessicurl WDT is protein free IIRC, and the TooShea has a small amount of oat protein, which I'd avoid for right now.

As you recover, you will probably be able to add a bit back, but you'll have to learn which proteins you can and cannot tolerate. A safe bet, would be that whatever proteins are in the things you need to get rid off will be off limits to you for now.

KCCC is pretty low on the protein. Some might say it has a minuscule amount from aloe because all plant matter, except plant oils, may contain protein. Some people also get what is known as flash drying from aloe products - where the hair feels instantly dry when putting the product on. I get this from straight aloe vera gel, but I can use KCCC. If your hair feels good otherwise, but feels dry as soon as you apply KCCC, you may have an incompatibility with aloe.

I don't remember where you live, but, if you are having winter right now, you may not need much protein right now anyway. I rarely need it in the winter, and will only use it is my hair feels to stretchy or if my root curl gets droopy. In the summer I can use it more often. Keratin is still the only protein I can handle, all others feel brittle, some even with a single use, especially grain proteins.

My advice right now would be to clarify to help rid the protein that can stick to a coarser hair shaft. You will still feel dry after using the shampoo, but it could help get the stuff off of your hair. Then, use rich moisturizing conditioners, every day if you need to. I had to condition every day when I was recovering, and that was in the summer when many others can get away with less conditioning.

That's about all I can think of for now, but feel free to ask any more questions that pop up.

I completely recognize what you are calling protein build-up and the straw-like feeling you're having.
Some posters have noticed they can get away with protein containing Stylers on a rotating basis when they really like the results, like B&A gel. But many of us who are protein sensitive avoid it In Everything (shampoo, condit, & stylers). I especially avoid Wheat and Soy proteins. I've been surprised to find that silk and keratin proteins don't give me straw dry and breaking hair.
When you chemically (relax, perm, color) or physically (flat iron, blowdry) cause some damage to your hair it can hold onto some protein and it can even condition it. But if you have relatively undamaged hair, I feel the protein builds up on the surface creating that rough feeling and eventually holding moisture away from the inside leading to breakage.
I suggest Lustrasilk Cholestrol Shea butter version, it's cheap, emollient, protein-free moisture. you can DT, or just use as regular condish. Don't try to rinse it out completely. I also like Elasta QP Intense but it has silk protein so I wouldn't try that until your hair has recovered.
Check the labels, there's inexpensive protein thrown into all kinds of products.
Do Not Worry - your hair can definitely come back. If you don't add more protein, it Will wear off. If you feel comfortable taking steps to revive it as everyone has given good advice - gently clarify, DT - I predict it will better sooner than you'd expect. It's not damage like if you had over-bleached or over-relaxed it. Just temporary roughness.

Thank you, RCC and WMC! I feel like I'm in a huge hair rehab group therapy session, LOL.

My poor hair is starting to feel much better already. RCC, that's very interesting what you said about flash drying and KCCC. I'll have to keep an eye on that. I don't *think* I have that issue, but you bet I'll be on the lookout for it. I'm hair paranoid now.

I'm getting ready to head to Sally's right now. I wanted to check this thread one more time to see what the hair gurus here had to say.

My poor hair. I'm going to do a DT with some lustrasilk , and another ACV rinse, and when Santa brings me some $$, I'll grab some Curl Rehab.

Thank you all so much, it's so nice to have some sympathy and good advice from people who totally get why I'm a crazy nutcase about my hair being trashed. You all rock!

Oh, and thank you Burgundy Locks! I have Sweetpea's site bookmarked, but that list has items on it that she hasn't added to her site yet, so THANK YOU!

I felt so bad for you, lol. It made me remember the time I avoided the boards for a month or two (way back when) because I couldn't find a good protein free product. Kinky Curly, Aubrey, CJ and the other richer protein free things were not as well talked about then so I was hating life for some time and almost chopped my hair to ear length. Really.

Thank God someone pointed me towards AOHR and Knot Today.

Curious, up until you warmed the GVP CB, was it as if you couldn't get your hair to take up condish? Or even if it took up any of the condish, as the day went on your hair got drier and drier? If so, I went through the same exact thing, and the problem wasn't protein. I went protein free for a while, and I had even worse hair. Like you, I was ready to cut it off.

Since you mentioned the warm GVP helping, maybe when apply heat when trying the Lustrasilk Shea Mango. I use a hand held dryer and change hands often...LOL!

Also check out DEL2C's thread about Spritz & Condish mehtod. I'm a fine haired wavy and it's made a big diff in my hair. I even do my DTs this way:
  1. Spritz hair until just damp
  2. Apply DT
  3. Heat
  4. Add COwash to DT'ed hair and scrub scalp
  5. Rinse
I do this over existing/yesterday's styling products BTW. Doesn't seem to make a difference.
