OhMyCurlz, you may or may not see this. I don't want to get into anything with you; however, there is a point you missed. The biggest issue is when the mixtress posts on the website that they "lovingly mixed this in their kitchen or took six months to develop the product." Those are the people who are taking the hit. One lady sent out her "new" product with an extensive list of ingredients on the label. That list was totally different then the ingredient list on the website. When asked about the inconsistency, she said they were "old" labels. Why would you have "old" labels for your newly launched product?? The lies were compounded.

If someone repackages bulk products, just adding fragrance, people don't mind (as much) as long as they aren't claiming to have developed the product.

Wow Ohmycurlz, I can't believe you read the whole thread, and that's the conclusion you came to. I don't know how many times others (or myself) can state how they feel, and then someone like you can come along and totally misinterpret it. Be offended, please notify those that you think this pertains to, (though I think some of the other members have already beat you to it). My response really isn't for you, its more for those that will read your post and wonder if we really are attacking the small business. I just wanna clarify that I'm not here to hurt small businesses, I'm here -- on this thread -- over and over again because I think if these companies weren't small businesses, they would be sued. You can't lie about your product. This whole "using a base" thing would NEVER have been an issue, if they hadn't claimed to come up with the recipe on their own. Again, I will state that one of my favorite products is a base and I have no issue with that company using it, and I will continue to purchase it. Because she has never claimed to come up with each and every recipe on her own. Do you finally see the difference?

Again, like Kathy so succinctly stated, its not that we're angry about small businesses using a base. Its that they are lying about the origin. Your grocery store analogy doesn't apply. It would be more like a grocery stores trying to sell a twinky to us by buying it in bulk, unwrapping it from the plastic, then re-wrapping it in pretty paper and ribbons, and then that grocery store claims to have "freshly baked it". That's the difference. Well actually, I'm sure this happens, but when it does, I make sure an inform my friends about it, so that they don't pay extra for a twinky in sheep's clothing.

And if you think that the moderators would ban you, just because you calmly (without personal slander) stated your personal opinion on a thread, you really don't frequent here.

My guess is that you are one of small business owners who thinks she's being attacked. *shrugs*

Hello people! I love small business! I hate liars! You figure out the rest.

Cosign kathymack and Goobernut.

The issue is NOT (for me anyway) that a company uses a base itself. The issue is that when they act like they are all mixtress over there in the apartment kitchen then when you pay a premium to buy the product (because small businesses usually charge more as they can't make 50 trillion bottles of conditioner like suave can to get economies of scale going!) you want to know that the product is unique.

If you say you developed it in your kitchen and I get it and it is the exact same as another companies then you didn't develop it in your kitchen now did you? I relied on that information when I made my purchase decision--to find out you lied is what I am upset about.

These are women (or men) marketing on purpose to people like those on naturallycurly.com -- representing themselves as something they are not. It hurts those who develop their own products and it hurts consumer confidence in small businesses. I myself am more worried about other small businesses being affected than about those ladies who put out there that they were developing everything as if they were a chemist or what have you.

My original point I'll make again---if I pay more for your product than a similar product I can get in a salon or BSS or wherever and you advertise it as unique and developed by you then that is my expectation as a consumer. We vote with our dollars and honey/dude knowledge IS power.

For ME if the company doesn't present itself as hand mixing slaving over a pot in the kitchen then I'll make my own purchase decision--like Goobernut said she and I love a conditioner we get from a company that uses a base (and a cheap one at that!) but they do add stuff and NEVER advertise that they don't use bases or pretend the stufff is all hand mixed beyond what they do. I'm fine with that and pay MORE for their product..I could buy the base myself sure and add the things they add..not interested. AT all. I'm fine with them and don't feel they misrepresented.

Your beef with EW is your own--I can't comment on that as I've not had the experience but I'd agree on one thing---selling to the public is probably not the best idea when you are advertising and have marketing materials indicating you're some "great secret" and intoning no one will know...I'd be pissed too if I was their wholesale customer!

Thank you for bumping this ellepixie! What a juicy thread. I probably would have never found this on my own and it was so interesting. It brought up topics/issues I've never really thought of before...and what articulate ladies we have on here! In my mind I was saying "yeah that's right!" when I read goobernut and kathymack's rebuttals. Yes I am a nerd.

I don't think that Afroveda was suspected back when this thread started earlier. But, seeing this, and the AV thread on 4a makes me smh.

I don't mind if you (gy) use bases, add a fragrance and sell it. Not everyone wants to buy in bulk or join a co-op. But, don't act like you're the chemist behind the formula if you do so. That just makes you a liar.

Never mind! I hadn't read to the end of the thread -- I see my point was already made, so I'm deleting what I said so as to not beat a dead horse! ;-D
