Leave-in "grabbing" your hair OR leave-ins that DON'T have slip

Like Tree1Likes

Okay, Ms. DEL2C suggested this as another topic of discussion.

Alexjoujou brought up a brilliant point (in a product review thread I think -- can't remember which one) that she likes leave-ins that "grab" your hair. She sited Hairveda MCPro as a specific example. I knew what Alex was talking about, because some of the combo's I've had the most success with were combos that almost made my hair stiff while wet.

Del mentioned she'd also had a lot of success with leave-ins that make her hair feel this way, so she thinks we might be on to something (for some people at least).

SOooooOo now we need to discuss -- how does your favorite leave in make your hair feel -- AND if you do have leave ins that make your hair "grabby" which ones are they?

I like Hairveda MCPro for just this reason. Its "grabby". DEL -- maybe you can try Hairveda's protein free condish? I also think CJ BC leave in makes my hair grabby. Both Alex and I think the notable exception to the grabby rule is CJ CA leave in. That's just a good leave in no matter what hah.

This is great!

I notice that my curl formation and it's ability to maintain that formation throughout the day is generally better with a leave in that "sets the stage" by not providing too much slip. It's not that I don't like slip but that I'm not looking for detangling in a leave in--I'm looking for something to provide moisture (and sometimes protein) that helps the curl enhancer work better.

For me a leave in that has tons of slip and "slipperi-ness" is the Shescentit Coco Leave In. Although I love the smell and the moisture level it doesn't work as a leave in for me when I'm going for curl formation. It seems to have so much slip that the curls literally slide out. This may sound strange to some. However for my son it is the perfect leave in because he has very short hair that's much thicker and it prevents and helps tangles in his hair (we don't comb it much as he doesn't tangle like my daughter).

I think it may be (the whole grab issue) because my curl is not strong by itself--it needs a lot of encouragement. My hair curls more (almost like a more grabby leave in actually holds my curls together better). My daughter's curl is very strong and she adores the greater slip leave in's. She gets fairy knots and her hair will go into dred's very easily if we aren't careful and the more slip the better for her.

I'd be so curious to know if anyone else finds that they like the leave in's that grab your hair.

So I find the leave in's that grab are:

Terax Life Drops

Hairveda Moist Condition Pro

Donna Marie Conditioner

Jasmine's Babassu Conditioner, Shea Conditioner and Moisture Renewal Leave in

Curl Junkie Curl Rehab

CJ Beauticurls Leave In

Lustrasilk OOC

The leave in's or products I've tried as Leave In's that have too much slip for me are:

KCKT

Shescentit Coco Leave In

GFTN/GFSS

KBB Nectar

The ones that work great even though they have slip are the CJ CA LI and the DB Pumpkin Conditioner.

Done experimenting! Loving Spiral Solutions products!

The only time I get grab from conditioners is if they have protein or panthenol or something else that is drying. That is not a good grab at all! That is craptastic grab.

I want slip and smoothness in my leave in. No grabbing. My curls from well enough with that.

KCCC, though, does have grab for me. I just call it hold.

I've been using Curl Junkie Curl Rehab as my winter leave-in quite often, and I get no grab, just smoothness. Smooth, soft, hold-my-cuticle-down smoothness.

This might be a 2 vs 3 things, or a protein lover vs protein hater thing, or some other random unknown thing.

I was thinking it was a protein thing, since alex was the only other person I'd heard talk about that -- but then DEL mentioned that she'd been having success with "grabby" leave ins and wanted the name of more leave-ins that feel grabby.

So maybe its a weak curl vs strong curl thing? I hate using those terms, because we all know that one type of curl isn't "better" than the other lol, but since Alex, DEL, and I are all trying to fight "curl/wave fall out" it could be like alex said and we don't need a ton of slip for that last step.

I don't know about DEL, but I know I'm not prone to tangles at all. I put any conditioner in my hair and it detangles.

I don't think it's a protein thing because Lustrasilk gives me that grabby feeling. It's the same kind of feeling I get from a curl cream that has some hold to it. I think there is something to the fact that as wavies we're trying to keep our curl as much as possible. That's quite a list Alex has going there!! I certainly haven't tried all those! I don't get that grabby feeling from CJ Rehab though but I only use it as a LI with CIAB because it adds weight to my hair. The two just play well together. I always reach for Lustrasilk this time of year. One thing I've noticed is stearamidopryl dimethylamine seems to help me with the "grab" I acutally liked Aura Cherry Almond Bark as a LI too. I agree with Alex that my past experience with KCKT and KBB Milk or Nectar was too slippery. I like the silky feeling in my conditioners for my rinse out, I don't need it for detangling I just like that slip.

What a great topic! Like RCC,I want slip, and lots of it. My hair needs slip in its leave in or I can feel it tangling as I am applying my styler. I have always thought this was a porosity issue? I feel like I need the slip to get the cuticle to lay down.

I'm not sure I understand what you guys mean by 'grab' do you mean a sort of firm feeling as opposed to really soft and slippy?

I don't get it either, so maybe it is a porosity related issue. I love some of the conditioners you've mentioned and and some of the others were nothing special.

Very interesting topic. I usually forget to use a leave-in and never really thought about "grabby" conditioners. I don't co-wash very often but found that "grabby" ones do give me better results. Now with gels I am the opposite; I like slip, I get much more curl and less frizz/ strings. I will be experimenting!

Stuff that has more hold or grab or whatever, like the Lustrasilk, doesn't do that to me. Especially the olive oil version...I get hair that I cannot finger comb but I have waves that hold all day. Like Alex mentioned about her daughter, even though I am only a 2a I have hair that can turn into dreads. So finding that balance between slip AND hold has been quite a challenge!

I floated a hair in a cup of water and it was still happily floating 24 hours later-and it wasn't sitting on surface tension.

But I've found that KCKT is too 'soft' to help hold curls, and something like JCWDT works much better-though it's still not great. On off days, though, i can scrunch in a little JCWDT and have moderate/mediocre waves, vs doing the same with KCKT and I go virtually straight.

Great topic though! I'm very curious to know what Dominicana's hand lotion has in it now though!

Thanks, I also didn't know what 'grabby' stands for.
I also think it's link to the porosity.

I've porous hair and I love conditioner with a lot of slip, like KCKT. I directly fall in love with it because of the incredible slip it has.
For me, slip is more important with LI then with rinse out co. So when a rinse out co is light enough and has a lot of slip, I use it as a leave-in. It's the case with Yes to Tomatoes and Cucumber conditioners.

My hair tangle a lot and as soon as I apply LI that doesn't have enough slip, I feel like my hair want to tangle and it's more complicated to put my styler because I usually finger comb while applying it to distribute it better.

Maybe its the carbomer? Is that something used for hold?
Although now that I'm a little more ingredient savvy. Thats alot of parabens.

I'm porous and tangle prone. I don't want grabby, lol. I get enough single strand knots in the winter (probably from my coat collar) I don't need anything else added to it.

Del and I are both porous and she wants grab, so maybe it's a curl type thing? Or maybe one of us in an exception to th porosity rule. Or, it could just be random.

I'm using Lustrasilk Shea Mango as my leave-in today, and it is slip and smoothness for me. Nothing grabby.
