It's about time for a haircut...

So I haven't had a real "haircut" since I went to Salem, MA back in July. I just have been so afraid to go to a local stylist and have simply been trimming my layers on my own since they have grown. My hair is about 5-6 inches longer now and it's definitely in need of a cut at this point. I found a salon about 40min away that has a great rep with curly hair, with 3 girls to choose from who specialize. I think I am going with the one who is particularly good with biracial hair because she seems to really know her stuff.

My dilemma is I don't know what to do with it. Originally I was growing it out because I am getting married in September and I thought it would look really good with my tiara and veil. However, I am getting antsy for a big change. I know hair grows but for how short I am thinking of going, it won't be at
the length it is now.

HOWEVER, I see all these cute styles and I get so tempted. I particularly like the second and fourth one. The very last one was a pic posted recently and I love that one as well but I am afraid I would not be able to replicate that on my own styling ability.

Suggestions?

The last one might leave you with the most options in September?? They are all really cute. Why not bring them with you and see what the stylist thinks?? Other thing is, it may take, even the best, stylist a few cuts to really learn your hair. If you don't do anything to drastic the first time, you can "check" them out and go from there.

Last comment. Remember, for the wedding you don't want to do anything too drastic. Hopefully, you'll be looking at these pictures in ??? years and think your hair still looks beautiful and not "what was I thinking??"

Haha, that is what I fear Kathymack! I think that is why I am looking to get something now, because at least I will have time to fix it before september.

I have only a couple of worries going shorter. I have had shoulder length hair plenty of times, but I always wanted more volume without getting the triangle head so I am hoping this stylist will be able to achieve it. Another good thing about this place is if you are dissatisfied, the owner has you come back for a free hair fix.

The second issue is I don't know how my curl will react. I have one side that is 3a/3b and another that is 2c/3a so I am really hoping I won't lose any curl on the looser side.

I love the last picture, I am just worried I wouldn't be able to style it that lovely.

You have a long time to play with it. I think that last style would look great with a looser curl. Remember, that should be a great dewpoint time where you live, so you should have optimal hair.

If you need more layers, which you will in the summer--you can get them. That style already looks like it has some extreme layering, so it may take your hair a little while to get used to it.

You have plenty of people on this board who care about you and will do whatever we can to help you have great hair for your special day. Just think of it as lots of extra positive "mothering" to get you through.

I think I will take 3 of the photos in and see what she has to say about it. She has done some aweosme makeover cuts. The last photo would maybe help give me more root curl too, and I would at least never have a dreaded triangle head!

Since you're a Curl Junkie, you could email Marsha and ask her for some advice--she's a stylist on top of all of her other talents! She knows hair and her products. She may be able to come up with a plan for you. It's a shame you don't live near Brooklyn--maybe we could see you have a "CJ product demo" and be featured like another curly who frequents these boards!

I grew my hair out and forced myself to keep it longish for my wedding. I think the most important thing is that you "look like you", so to speak. Those pictures will be around forever. I love shorter hair and always get the itch to cut and I do it often but for my wedding I really wanted that longer flowy feminine archetypal hair. Do you have your tiara and veil yet? If so, take them with you to your appt and let the stylist see what your thinking - it may shape how she guides you in your choices.

Also congrats on your upcoming nuptials!!

As someone who's had shorter hair my entire life, I think that for my wedding I'd want short hair. Just because it's more me. I'm sure you'll look beautiful either way, but if you want the short hair, I'd say just go for it. I mean, don't neglect your research. Go for consultations, find a good fit with a stylist, bring in lots of pictures and the tiara/veil if you have them, and really feel confident going into the cut. I loveee the 2nd and 4th cuts. In fact, I'm going to bookmark this thread for my next haircut.

CurlyQMom - This is the longest I have managed to grow my hair out in a long time. I always end up cutting it back to just above my shoulders. I do have my tiara and veil, and I think when the time comes closer to my wedding if I decide to go back to this place, I will bring it. When I originally purchased them, I had long hair and it looked good, but I don't think it would look bad at all with a cute shorter cut.

Laura Lee- I am thinking I may want shorter hair for my wedding as well. It is a perfect month for perfect hair here in Maine (September) and I am going to be doing my own hair. I refuse to let anyone else do it, and for me shorter hair has always turned out better with less effort. I do adore the 2nd and 4th cuts. I think the 4th one is closest to how my hair would turn out. I just want more volume and I think all those cuts promote it.

I wore my hair fairly short for years then started growing it long for my wedding and permed it. I cut it off when I had my son and never grew it out again till 10 years later. Oddly my hair without a perm now, looks almost the same as my wedding hair.

I think contacting Marsha and taking the pics to your stylist are great ideas.

Keep in mind, a lot of women after 15 yrs are saying "what was I thinking?" when they look at the photos. Hair and clothing styles change too often.

Your hair is beautiful now and I know it'll be perfect whatever you decide to do.

Seek not to change the world. Rather seek to change your mind about the world.
I like the 2nd and 4th as well, and think either would look great on you! I would take the veil and tiara to the first cut to get her opinion anyway, in case your hair won't grow out all the way.

But if you tend to always have hair at or above shoulder, then you may feel more *you* with the shorter hair, instead of long, for the wedding.

Awesome! That was great of her to help you out!

I would get my hair cut like #4 in a new york MINUTE if I thought my hair would do that. My hair has no body, so I don't think it would stay like that for more than 5 mins haha. I think you'll look great!

#4 is really cute/beautiful/classy. If I had a stronger curl pattern when short, I'd be all over it.

I would say... don't go TOO short.. leave some options for doing an updo or gently sweeping your hair back. Those pictures should give you plenty of hair to work with for your wedding.

My avatar is from right after my wedding (sept/oct 09). I just cut it pretty short 2 days ago. I actually decided a year ago to grow my hair for the wedding, and this is how long is was for the wedding.

I don't have any really good pictures of my hair, but here are a few:

I had a tulle poof in my hair - no veil. I loved it.
