I'm going crazy. I need help with my scalp (and a little rant)!

For about the past 4 months I've been very, very frustrated and very confused. It seems I have these two oily patches on my scalp. One in the front and center, and one in the back of my head. They're itchy sometimes and when I itch it I get white gunk under my nails. When I part my hair and look, there's these little flakes. So I did some research: it sounded like build-up. I tried everything and nothing worked. ACV rinses, baking soda, sugar scrubs... You ask, I've tried it. So I've finally ruled out build-up.
I started keeping the conditioner away from my scalp and using a gentle shampoo every few days. That seemed to help, but just a little. Then I noticed something recently. When I get out of the shower the flakes are there; when my hair is wet. It seems like these patches are water-resistant or something.
Grr. I'm so frustrated! I'm sick of these flakes, they gross me out! And my scalp feels so gross all the time. My hair, well it looks and feels great except for frizz near my scalp.
If you could help me out, I would love you! Some info about what I use: I've been modified CG for a year. I use Curlisto bio-curl shampoo and Devacurl One Condition just on the length of my hair. Products: I've been using Mixed Chicks Leave-In and AG Re:coil. Sometimes I use Curl Keeper or Batia & Aleeza gel.
Please help.
Kim, I'm sorry you are going through this. Have you considered seeing a dermatologist? It sounds as though you've pretty much tried everything else. I hate going to doctors (lord knows I've seen a lot of them recently ) but sometimes that's the only answer. Good luck - I hope your problem goes away!
2/c and some 3A.
Protein sensitive but can use occasionally
Highly porous. Color over grey.
Best 1st day method: Super Soaker
Stylers: Mix Curls in a Bottle into everything for shine. Terrible pj
Sometimes try roller sets - classic glamor but I prefer my curls.
Every day is a gift
Hi Kim,

When you say modified CG, I assume you also mean you use some cones? The reason I guess this is that aside from your shampoo (which I will address further down) a few of your products contain amodimethicone, which is supposed to be a cone that won't buildup. However, I found that for me it DID buildup. I loved Deva One Condition (I had the old verson w/ amodimethicone) but it built up and left my scalp itchy. I had to give it up. I know you said you only use it on your length, but still....Also, the MC leave in has the same cone. If you are sensitive to this cone, which it seems you may be, this can cause serious buildup over time. Once the buildup sets it can take several weeks to a full month to fully get rid off. This is how long it took me to get that white gunk off my scalp.

It doesn't sound like you have a scalp/dermatologist issue, so I wouldn't recommend one ($$) just yet. what it does sound like is that you need to select new products to use as well as stop using the curlisto shampoo. It has one of the harshest sulfate cleanser known to the entire living universe in it! That cleanser is probably drying out your hair and causing your scalp to overproduce sebum. The sebum combined with the other products you put in your hair are causing big time buildup of whitish gunk + that oily feeling (which is what excess sebum does). Try a non-sulfate no-cone shampoo--Avalon Organics clarifying one worked for me. I used it as well as the brown sugar + Conditioner + tea tree oil scrub. It will take some time to truly cleanse your scalp to be free of it. But if you continue on this modified coarse you will need to modify your product choices. There are plenty of gentle shampoos and cone-free products out there that work great on curly hair.

I hope this helps.

Susan I think you just saved my life. Whilst I don't have patches like the ones the OP described I do have a similar flaking problem and I know my rinse out has amodimethicone very far down the ingredients list. I'll need to try the condish + brown sugar + TTT scrub.
