Does Gel go bad?

So I bought some Chi Infra Gel from a local BSS. There isn't an expiration date on it but every time I've used it my hair has been producty and gross.

I got a sample of the gel from CurlyKey and hers was fine and worked awesome.

Given my local BSS may have had this sitting around for a while I'm just checking. I didn't think it went bad but it's completely different than the sample I've been using.

BRHG has an expiration date on it, so I assume that means it can go bad. If it can go bad, then the Chi probably can too. But, this is based on a series of assumptions.
edit-BRHG does not have an expiration date printed on it. woops.

LOL, you want me to send you a sample of mine to compare? then that way you know if its changed and/or if the one you got at your BSS was bad. Another possibility, it could have been frozen/overheated in transit.

I know I've pulled out some old products and my hair will feel nasty when I use them. When I buy a new one of the same product and use it everything seems fine so I think it's possible you could have gotten an old product.

Thanks all

Yep pretty much as expected it's likely old. Disgusted with myself..I usually try to avoid that BSS!

I'll p/u a new bottle somewhere that has more traffic. I did check at Ulta last week and they had expiration dates of 3/2010. Hmm.... Ross had some as well..they go through tons of stuff and might be a better option.

Product separation, scent change, rancid, moldy or just have an outright grossness factor.

I know this is a bit old, but where did you all find the expiration date, I bought a 34 fl oz. bottle of Biosilk on Amazon but I don't see a date, I don't recall ever seeing a date on my past bottles (the small ones) either.

I bought my beloved Desert Essence Coconut conditioner and it was frozen in transport. It did not recover once thawed. It was thicker and my hair didn't react the same way.
My biosilk doesnt have a date either. It does have the jar symbol that shows its shelf life is 12 months after opening.
I think it depends on what it contains as far as how long it lasts but it does eventually go bad.

I had some IC Fantasia Gel that I am positive that went bad. I had it for a little more than a year. I wasnt using it so I stored it away in a dry dark place with the lid on tight. I had only used it like once. I took it out just last week to try it...and it looked a little odd..but I just used it anyway because it smelled normal.

I went to the store, saw a jar..looked at it..open the lid and to my surprise it looked different..yet the formulations were exactly the same. The one in the store was smoother, the smell was lighter, and it was CRYSTAL clear...not cloudy.

I am convinced that most products we put in our hair and on our skin certainly have a shelf life..hell if distilled and bottle water have shelf lives....I am certain gels do.

Generally, do all products go bad after 12 months? I have a huge bottle of Biolage Gelee that I've had since January and that thing is going to last me 3 years. I only use a nickel-size amount each time.

Same here. I bought a large bottle of BRHG from Overstock and it has no expiration date. I will use it until it smells, looks, or acts 'off'.

Woops, sorry for the confusion. When I posted that brhg had an expiration date, I didn't own my own bottle yet. At the time of the earlier post, another user had just started a thread about how she bought some brhg and after she got the bottles, she realized it was out of date. I thought there was an actual date on the bottle.

A lot of bottles will have a little symbol that looks like a pot with the top off with a number inside it - denoting the number of months the product will be good for after opening. Here's an example: http://img4.realsimple.com/images/09...symbol_300.jpg . Not everything has one, but I think it's becoming more and more standard.

I think most products have an overall shelf-life as well, even if they've not been opened, but I don't know what that might be.
