Why isn't my hair as curly as it used to be?

Hi, I'm new to the site. I was just watching an infomercial for Ouidad's Curl Confidence, and did some research on Google before ordering and stumbled across this site. Glad I did! I ordered a starter kit from Sephora instead of wasting tons of money on the Curl Confidence site (thanks!).

I'll be 28 in less than 6 months, and I live on Long Island, NY. I've noticed that my hair just isn't curling like it used to. I've tried different cuts, different products, but the sad reality is that I think my hair texture is just changing (that whole 7 year thing). Has anyone else experienced this? Does it eventually go back? I'm talking going from Shirley Temple ringlets to dead lifeless flat curls. It's so depressing! I have to blow my hair straight now. I bought Ouidad's products as a last ditch attempt at bringing my hair back to life. If this doesn't work, I'm afraid my blow dryer will become my new best friend
I'm a long island girl too
err...didn't really have anything to say other than welcome!

I live outside of Philly. We're having an unusually cold, dry winter this year--which could be the culprit to your problem. Before finding this site (and learning to use products and good technique) my hair was wavy in the winter and curly during the summer. Now, it looks like my signature picture all of the time.

I'd advise you to read, read and read some more. Each of the forums have stickies at the top that are very helpful. You may want to invest in Struttswive's e-book which is available on her website: http://www.livecurlylivefree.com/

In order to benefit the most from this website, you need to identify your hair properties (texture and porosity are most important.) Find someone with hair like yours and "stalk" them on the boards. Look at their products (most have it in their signatures) and what they discuss/do.

It could be your weather, but I strongly believe hair texture changes as we age. I used to have huge ringlets that have settled into waves and some 3a curls. It is very disappointing but we gotta work with what we are given.

It might be the weather, because I remember having this dilemma same time last year (only this year it's worse). I had it long and while it looked lovely straight, it looked terrible curly, so I decided to cut it off (shoulder length) in an attempt to save the curls. Didn't work. And it happened to be a TERRIBLE cut! So after a friend tried to salvage my hair and re-cut it 2 days later, it still doesn't curl how it used to. I've posted several pictures of my "hair history." Pictures are from 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010. Last picture is the first time I wore it curly after my haircut. I'm so sick of blow drying! Thanks for all your tips. What a great website this is! Oh, and I had tried No-Poo and hated it. I have to read the book everyone is talking about.

Don't know where you live, but the NE is MUCH colder and dryer this year. Since, I've learned to use more moisturizing products--I haven't had a problem this year. My curls are as tight as ever and don't loosen like they did last year (without gel.) No gel for me this year.

I live on Long Island. We've been hit with a lot of snow this year, but my hair tends to thrive in snow, rain, humid days, etc. I think I have to accept that my hair has changed. You can see a noticeable difference from 2005-2009 in those pictures. I just washed my hair with Burt's Bee's Pomegranate shampoo & conditioner (I've had them for a while but rarely use them because my hair feels like straw when I use them) because I thought maybe my hair needs a break from the SLS shampoos I normally use. I also used paper towels instead of a normal towel, and I do have AnGELL which I usually use with some shine serum and mousse - only a dime sized amount though - and this time I used probably about a half dollar size. Still feel the need to use hairspray (any time I haven't used hairspray, I feel like my hair is frizzy and out of control), so I just used a little. I also never put in product with my hair soaking wet (because it takes so long to air dry as is), but I did that this time, too. We'll see if it helps!

How long has your hair not been curling as much as you'd like? Is it just a seasonal thing or has it been going on year round? Winter can definitely loosen curls and dry air will almost always do so. But, if you have been blowing your hair straight for a while it could be curling less now because of damage.

Does that make sense? In other words, my hair no longer curls from root to tip - it's pretty flat at the top, curly in the middle, and then stringy at the bottom. I even just looked at pics from this past summer and my hair was pretty curly, minus the crown. But I definitely noticed a difference probably around this time last year. So I got it cut because I thought that would help, but it didn't. Same this year. The cut was SO bad (and uneven) that it didn't help anything. And as for the blow drying, I've always let my hair air dry, and it I did blow it straight, it was very seldom, and I'd always be able to leave it without washing for sometimes 4, 5 days. I blow it out nearly every day now out of necessity. The bad cut I just got had to be fixed 2 days later, and it made me have some short pieces at the top, therefore forcing me to straighten it. Maybe it's just my haircuts. I have nowhere to go! I have really healthy hair (I don't color it at all), and it's super shiny.

It could be your hair cuts, it could be the weather, or it could just be that your hair is changing, like you thought earlier. There are just so many things that affect how our hair curls.

My hair was almost 3c before I moved out of NYC. Now that I live in a very dry climate my hair sometimes barely curls tight enough to be 3b. The dry air has a lot to do with it, but I also now have a thyroid disorder and have had two children in recent years. The hormone changes in my body have contributed as well. Huge amounts of moisture and protein have been helping my hair to curl more. I don't know what your texture or porosity is, so I can't say if protein would help you.

Was it www.livecurlylivefree.com?

If you did, there is an entire section on figuring out texture and porosity. It's very easy.

From what you described of your hair, you either need some protein or more moisture. But you won't know for sure until you do the texture and porosity test.

Here are the quickie tests:

Texture- Run your finger from root to end of one strand of hair. Smooth = fine or normal (fine hair is also very thin in diameter; normal hair won't be as thin). Rough = coarse (this type of hair will also have odd kinks and bends somethimes)

Porosity- Low porosity= hair takes forever to get wet and forever to dry without product. Run finger from end to root. Finger slides up without bumps. High porosity = hair gets wet very fast and drys very fast (like within 30 min or less) without product. Run finger from end to root, feels bumpy/rough or finger catches. In between=Normal.

Based on the above, if you have fine or normal texture you probably need protein. A lack of protein can cause the ringlets in your hair to deflate. Follow protein treatments with deep conditioning.

If you have coarse hair, you will need super moisturizing products especially in the winter. Intense moisture for coarse hair will plump the curls up.

Low porosity= you probably need to get more moisture in your hair. Many low porosity curlies use super soaker methods for getting moisture and product into hair.

High porosity = you can probably use a little protein and need to somehow seal hair with mositure in it to solve the problem since highly porous hair easily leaks moisture causing deflated curls.

If you are a combo that seems to conflict let us know so we can give more specific advice.

Belasuna - I haven't read the e-book. I am waiting for the regular book to be available at my library. I have one question though - with the quickie tests you wrote (you rock, btw), should my hair be dry, wet, without product?? It's blown straight right now, so obviously it'll be smooth to the touch. About to jump in the shower though and let it air dry (with straightening product), so I will try it out when it's nearly dry...unless you tell me otherwise!

Ok, so here's what I've got!

Texture: Thick & coarse
Porosity: Low

I got out of the shower at 9pm, and now at 11pm, my hair is still wet underneath. Takes even longer with products!!! So now that I know what I am, I don't know what it means.

hey belasuna, actually i could use a little help regarding texture and porosity, if you would be so kind. i've been trying to figure this one out for a month now, and i seem to fall right through the cracks.

i seem to be all 3 textures, with fine to normal all throughout, and coarse mostly on the top of my head. when i run my finger down a strand, i believe it feels a little bumpy no matter where i get a piece from.. but i can never tell if that's just where it's bending from an actual curl, does that make sense?

just as confused with porosity if not more so. my hair does not take long to get wet. i think it gets wet pretty normally? i'm not sure about drying because i haven't tempted to dry it without product in my hair in a very long time. but thinking back, i do recall a couple horror shows where i was without products after it was wet, and it did dry much quicker than normal.. with product, it takes anywhere from 3 or 4 hours, to sometimes as long as 7 or 8. (though i've noticed the 7 or 8 hasn't happened in a while, maybe cause i stopped using cones since?) the couple times without, i dunno, maybe it was drying in an hour or 2? and it dried really limp and frizzy.. and my hair felt super fine in texture. and sliding a strand of hair from bottom to root gives me the same confusion as the other direction.. not sure if it's odd bumps, or just the natural curl pattern being felt as it's stretched out.

if you could try to help me on this one, i would forever be indebted to you! i've been buying new products like crazy, but not sure if i'm screwing up on this one. there are pics in my fotki if it helps to determine anything.

ok tarc, i will leave your thread alone now, sorry!
