What finishing products do you use?

I'm somewhere between a 3a, 3b - dealing with some lazy curls lately, but I want a good finishing CREME. When my hair would do it's thing no matter what (like, 6 years ago), I would just add cheap stuff to it after it was dried to combat frizzies. I was using John Freida's Brilliant Brunette styling creme but it appears as though they don't make it anymore. Before that, I had been using Avon brand curly finishing cremes, but those have been out of production for a while now. I recently went with a friend to a beauty supply store and picked up TiGi's Foxy Curls Contour Cream (smells just like yellow and green Skittles), but I found it was pretty sticky, and more like a gel-creme. I also picked up Kenra's Curl Defining Creme, which also smells fantastic, but had a similar consistency as the Foxy Curls product. What I'm looking for is more of a hand cream type of consistency. I think the problem with the Kenra & TiGi was that they can be used to style the hair AND as an after care product. I need one product for finishing only. Any suggestions?

My always go-to finisher is Set It Free, and while a spray I squirt it in my hand, rub together and use like a cream.

I have also used Tweek which I loved so much...if I didn't have other things to use up first I would order more.
2b (a fine 'n porous wavy)...and finally growing out :-)

Wash: Deva Low-poo
Condish and leave in: OneC or Suave Coconut

Styler: Angell or the Deva foam, sometimes KKKC

Etc: Set It Free as a refresher

Protien: Looking for one

I love hairspray...don't judge
Hmm...those don't seem to be what I'm looking for. You have great hair, though. Do you like the Low-Poo? Because I've tried the No-Poo and I hated it. I feel like it made my hair feel like straw. I also tried Burt's Bees Pomegranate shampoo & conditioner which has no SLS in it, and while I'm not crazy about the way that makes my hair feel, I'm going to start using it again when I wear my hair curly just from reading things on this site. I'd love to do CG - need to read the book first. Thanks for your suggestions!

Hi tarc -

If you are not anti-silicones, Avon does still have a good curl creme in the Mark Curl Goddess line. I stopped using it when I stopped using regular shampoo as I was afraid it would not all wash out, but certainly worth a try.

Also, oddly, I've liked the Biosilk Thickening Creme, it's not CG either as it has sulfates and mineral oil I think, but it does seem to smooth very well without causing any stringyness so I still rely on it on occassion. It's not actually Thickening in any way I can tell, not sure why it's called that.

If your hair likes oil, you might like the Qhemet Burdock Root Butter Creme; it's wonderful smelling and very good for the health of the hair but not always frizz - busting as it's got a lot of moisture in it.

There are websites that can jump start you on the method. (I think someone also made a post on the newbie board with the general guidelines...) I went CG early this month and my hair feels so soft. It still feels a little strange to me, but we'll see how it works out! Good luck!

i'm new at this whole cg thing, but have been experimenting with products like craaaaazy lately. i too am on a mission to find the perfect styling creme. a really thick one. i used to use biotouch leave in frizz control as my thick one, and moroccan oil hydrating styling cream for all hair types as my thinner one. since giving them up i have found a couple things that my hair is really liking. one is komaza califia moisturing creme. it's not as thick as i was looking for, but it seems to be doing the trick. i have used it on wet and dry hair, both with good results. the other product is curl junkie aloe fix. it's more of a gel than a creme, but it's really thick and to me acts more like a creme. only used it on wet hair so far, with awesome results. have not tried it on dry hair, but it says that you can.

You know, I tried a sample of the Moroccan curl creme, and I really liked it, but now can't find it anywhere. Someone I used to work with gave me the sample because her sister in law works at a salon - when I told her "yes, I'd like to buy the full sized bottle using your sister in law's discount," she got it for me, but it was the wrong product - it was that regular styling creme which was SO much thinner than the curl creme. I don't want to buy it online because it'll be expensive with shipping and everything. But maybe I should just go back to that since I liked it. And I had tried the Mark line - the gel (terrible), the serum (pretty good as far as serums go - but you really can't go wrong with them), and the creme. The creme was too thin for me.

As far as the Burt's goes, I don't love it. But I also have Organix Vanilla something or other - and it doesn't have any sulfates or cones in it. I'm going to have to do some more research on this CG thing and really look into it.

Thanks, girls!

I absolutely LOVE Alba Botanica soft hold style cream. I usually use this for 2nd day hair, or when my hair needs a boost after a workout or something.

Last week I got 4th DAY HAIR using this stuff! I used KCCC as my gel for day 1, then each day after that used this stuff + FSG. Amazing amazing amazing...and the best part is, my hair didn't feel all producty. Yay!

I usually apply it over the top layer of hair, then kind of stroke it down clumps of curls like I'm milking a cow. This works to re-clump even after I've raked through my hair in the morning to get out the tangles.

I am in love with this stuff.

yeah, sort of expensive, showing a 17 oz bottle to be around $30, plus $6 shipping.

not cg, plus some really toxic chems in there. but if it'll work for you till you find something better (if that's what you want), then go for it!

I am obsessed with products and have been CG for about a month now. I've found some great products. I love Suave Rosemary Mint as my cowash. Then I use a combination of AG Recoil Conditioner and almond oil. I use Suave Humectress as my leave in conditioner and I use Aveda's Confixor gel. I also love Phyto's Moisturizing Balm.

I also made a lavender spritzer (water and lavender essential oil) that I use on my hair.

I'm debating buy AG's Recoil or Devacurl's Angel. Not sure which I should get.
Mosuna, is Alba Botanica a creme consistency, or more like a gel? The price looks great - never heard of the brand before, do you buy it at a special store, or would they have it at a drugstore?

Dagi - I'm still SO new to everything - I'm not even 100% sure what CG entails, but I will be looking into it when I can get the book from the library. I know sulfates and cones are bad, but what other chemicals are in the Moroccan Oil that you said were really bad?? And are they bad because they damage the hair, or just dry it out? I'm so frustrated by my hair - I had such a system for so many years. Down to a science! And now I feel like I'm back at square one because my hair has not been curly like it once was. I'm posting a picture from 2007 and 2009 to show you what a difference it is. I just don't know what to do with it anymore. I wonder if CG would even help, or if my hair has simply just changed. SIGH.

What finishing products do you use?-2007.jpgWhat finishing products do you use?-2009.jpg

And Proserpine - are you talking about Suave products that are like, 99 cents at the grocery store?? Does the cheap stuff really work? That would be amazing! lol...and what does the Lavender spritzer do? Just refresh?

You all have so many useful tips - I'm so lucky to have stumbled across this site! I feel like there's hope for my lazy curls yet! Thank you so much! <3

hey tarc, from what i remember on my little research quest a few hours ago with the alba, it's a cream, wait, here's the link..

http://www.albabotanica.com/?id=448&pid=525

not sure where you get it, i do remember years ago using one of their body washes, and believe i could get it at the health food store.. but not sure.

edit: right, alba.. i was thinking of something else. sold in health food stores, but have been seeing it lately in some markets, try whole foods, etc.

regarding m.o, i still have an old bottle of the one that i used to use.. it does have cones, so not cg. and i remember that it acted like a cone after a while.. it started acting like hair crack, the more i used it, the more i needed it, which always sucks. you are interested in the other one, but i would be very surprised if it didn't also have cones. also, it has parabans, which aren't bad for hair, but bad for health. my watching out for them (along with a host of other ingredients) has nothing to do with trying to be cg, so i'm guessing you won't find too much talk about it on these threads? but i could be wrong. some ingredients have been linked to cancer, along with other major problems.. have been banned in other countries, but not the u.s.! so anyway, m.o. has the nasties.

don't worry, i'm really new at all this too. it's totally overwhelming, i know. every once in a great while i spend an entire weekend (like this weekend!) just going through all the forums to learn as much as i can, but then i get so boggled i eventually just say, "eh, screw it". but don't give up hope! i have learned that your hair has probably lost its curl because all the cones are suffocating it, not letting any moisture in, eventually drying it out.. and the sulfates are just stripping all the oils. it would be a good place to start by getting massey's book. it's a fun read and explains a lot.

it will all start to make sense soon enough, i pwomise! and btw, your hair still looks perty

oh yeah, and the lavender mist does refresh, it has antibacterial properties.. and it smells yummy. just did it the 1st time today myself, more fun than just water.

I've known for about a year now that sulfates were bad. I found a HUGE list of sulfate, protein and silicone free products by searching this site. I'm excited to start using some. And I can't believe that Suave is one of the brands!! How exciting because it's so cheap and convenient (at literally every grocery store around here). I did order a trial sized pack of Ouidad's products the day I found this site. Should be here today, actually. I'm pretty excited to try it out!

Thanks for the compliment and all your help! It just bugs me that my hair doesn't look like what it once did!! SO FRUSTRATING!

i tried some of the ouidad products before coming across this site. they made my hair look awesome! but i think there are some cones in some of the stuff (can't remember), but they may be the ones that are water soluble and will wash out. when you get them, i would just cross check the ingredients with the silicone info on this site. i've seen a good few articles in here about which ones are ok and which ones aren't.

you are welcome, know you are not alone! my difference is that my hair never looked good, i am trying to get there for the 1st time! hang in!

I just did a search for a list of what should and should not be in products, so I'll do a comparison later on. I did get the Ouidad products in the mail today and I'm so excited! I love getting stuff like this in the mail. However, I can't even try it for a week!! I'm leaving for California on Wednesday and figured it would be easier to have my hair straight for the trip.
