When do you apply your gel?

I've been experimenting with different gelling techniques and wondered what others are doing.

At first, I used to apply my leave-in and then put my gel right over that.

Then I saw a post on here where someone said her hair needed to find its curl before she gelled it, otherwise it came out straighter. So I started scrunching my hair after applying leave-in, and when it was getting nice and springy then applying gel.

I'm not the sort to leave well enough alone, so the other night it occurred to me that gelling before plopping might be removing some of the gel, along with the water. So I took my microfiber towel and scrunched, scrunched, scrunched until it was towel-dry, THEN gelled. My hair got super-crunchy as it dried, and I put it in a crunchy pineapple (no SOTC) and went to bed.

The next morning it was STILL kind of crunchy; I SOTCed and had awesome curls. I even got 2nd day hair out of it with only minimal misting/re-scrunching (usually I have to totally wet it almost soaking wet for 2nd day).

Fine/iii density/high porosity

Current favorites:
Suave Naturals Coconut co-wash
GVP Protein Restructuring Conditioner
GVP Conditioning Balm
Eco-Styler, LALSG, BRHG, Garnier Curl Shaping Spray Gel
ACV rinse 1x per week
I put my leave in, curl enhancer, and gel in soaking wet - raking first, then scrunching. Let it sit for a few minutes while I brush my teeth, etc. Scrunch with a curls towel to get out the excess water, then diffuse dry.

How do you distribute the gel if the hair is not very wet and you don't comb it through?

I tried what you did Salamander -- because I had the same thought process you did heh -- and it didn't work for me. My hair was TOO crunchy. In fact it didn't SOTC and my hair ended up looking stringy in parts. It was nice and curly, but it still looked wet and I couldn't get rid of those crunchy parts.

However, my hair is much finer and thinner than yours, so that's prolly the difference.

I always put gel into soaking wet hair, then squeeze and scrunch. Then I plop in a terry cloth turban towel for 20 min or so, then air and diffuse dry.

Raking doesn't work for me and my hair hates having anything applied to it when damp or dry.

My hair doesn't care for damp or dry either.

I use a leave-in, then a serum, then a curl creme, then rake in the gel (and wad it all up on the top of my head until it gets good and squishy). Then I plop for about an hour. I use a LOT of product, so I've never had an issue with loss on the towel. And I've been getting bouncy, clumpy curls.

CG since 2/07 and loving it!
I have recently started applying my gel right after my leave-in. Getting great results with that. Previously, it would be leave-in, then curl enhancer, then gel. Gel is always last for me, on wet hair.

Sometimes I will use AV gel to revive curls on dry hair; then it's the only product I use.
