Great article, thanks for posting! I have to admit I was a little disappointed by the photos, though - the black and white format made it hard to tell that the women had gray hair. Most looked like they could have been blonde. I'd like to see those photos in color!

Click here for the complete photo gallery. I found the link to "their words" to be the most interesting.... Thanks, banjo, for introducing this article and artist!

I liked the video, too, and reading the words of the women involved.

On the info tab at that link, I followed a link to a Pinterest board someone made with hundreds of photos of gray-haired women, and saw a photo there of someone from NC.com! I can't for the life of me remember her screen name, but I definitely recognized her photo. Thought I might see Jeepy there or rbb, but no dice. :-)

Default so, it's me again

perhaps you recall me explaining the hair loss. thankfully for now it is no longer coming out. what i am left with is maybe 30% gray, very fine and very dry hair. It's seeming almost straw-like second day and is also growing in with a funny curl/wave/kink near the scalp.

I am a very natural person but i contemplate going to my salon and buying the stuff they often suggest that i havent felt the need or desire to in the past. I've even thought i might see if they can add a toner that will give it some pigment.

i am looking for advice as far as the moisture and also the changed way it has begun growing in-- know that is not to be changed but tell me i'm not alone, please.
Thanks

you are not alone!!

several times in the past we have asked for a separate forum for gray hair, but were denied. i think it's like before curlies were encouraged to go natural, people are unaccepting of the differences in gray hair.

i have found i need to use heavier conditioners, and something to seal my hair in low dew points. i've been using jane carter nourish & shine to seal, and it has made a tremendous difference this winter.

i, too, have straw-like hair around my face. after i blot dry my hair, i add extra leave in to those spots and it has made a difference. another thing i will do is if seems dry i will add more conditioner (on dry hair) at night.

what product are you talking about that your salon wants you to use?

Thanks rbb for the response. I am glad i am not alone. this hair is very different. I thought that it was perhaps because of my adrenals that accounted for both the hair falling out as well as the dryness but now i think it's just the hair that's left which is a lot more gray- whereas before i had a bunch of brown holding up and supporting and creating the softer look, if that makes sense.

I will try a seal- in like you say - maybe i'll pick up the Jane ___ nourish and shine.

The salon has a few product lines i cant remember - i've tried a few of them in the past but always return them because i dont like the smells and dont want all the extra indredients on my hair. Plus, it's pricey.
sometimes , lately though i get very frustrated and think desparate thoughts.

i just noticed that you use kckt as your leave in. years ago when i tried it i found it very drying, absolutely not moisturizing enough. if you are having problems with your hair, i suggest you try a different leave in, something more moisturizing. see if that helps. and i'd still do some sealing, especially on those straw-like hairs.
hang in there, you'll figure it out. the thing with gray hair is it is different and we have to change what we do to our hair. well, i suppose some will say they haven't changed a thing, so not all will need to change, but a lot of us will.

Hi everyone

I have been on this site for years but this is my first time seeing this thread. I have been admiring the silver and white hair of several of you that have posted extensively in this thread for years.

I am not quite 40 yet (turning 35 in a week ) but I got my first silver hair in the 6th grade. I finally have enough silver strands to claim salt and pepper as my hair color (my avatar doesn't do my hair color justice). I have never dyed my hair (well I did have a short stint with henna and indigo several years ago but that hair is all gone now). I have always embraced my gray. I think this is largely due to graying so early; it has always been a unique thing about me, sort of my trademark. I was also blessed to have several women in my life whose hair I adored as a child who were completely silver. I think all of this has helped me to embrace the gray. Well that and the fact that because I started graying so early I never associated it with aging (that seems to be a big stumbling block for lots of my frieds who are starting to see their first grays).

I am so excited about this thread and have already learned so much even though I haven't made it all the way through. There are so many things I never thought about (like thinking about how different products affect the color of the grays). I have so many questions but I figure I should get through the entire thread so as not to ask something that has been asked and answered 100x over . I just wanted to make a quick post to say hi and thank you for this thread!

LL - a little over a year ago, I seriously entertained the idea of shaving my head and getting a wig. I hated my hair and was miserable about it the condition it was in. I spent hours researching wigs and actually went shopping for one. Luckily, I found this site before the razor came out and jumped into CG like my life depended on it.

My first post on this site is here: http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlta...hair-loss.html (post #13). That was about whether or not my IUD was responsible for the hair issues I was having. I did have it removed but, since my hair started getting better immediately after going CG, I don't think the IUD had as much to do with the hair trouble as I thought. Regardless, I'm happy not to have it in me!

I've no doubt that changing the products I use and not coloring my hair anymore (yay!) has changed it dramatically. I am an ingredient fanatic, and use only the most natural products I can find. Also, I went through a period of about three months of doing protein treatments twice a week - I know it sounds like a lot but my hair LOVES protein. Of course, I deep conditioned after the PT. I did a lot of scalp massage, too.

My hair now is healthier, curlier and better looking than it has been in years. I get compliments on it all the time. A few months ago, my sister and her hubby were over and my bro-in-law said to me (after using the bathroom) "Why in the heck do YOU need thickening conditioner. I mean, gawd!!" Shoot, that's the nicest thing my BIL has ever said to me -that alone is proof that I'm doing something right!

Hang in there!

Bubblemama, Thanks so much for your story and your words of inspiration. I can glean that hope and heartfelt energy you put into your words.
While i had gone to uber natural since starting curlygirl methods back in 09, at the same time my hair just kept changing--- for a while it was beautiful. The changes i see now i cant attribute to anything other than hormonal since i'm in that change BIG time right now. It's gotten to the point i stare at womens hair to see if i see these same things happening to them( Mainly, the weird wave/curl pattern ) .
I have a good stylist that cuts curly method (dry) and she loves my hair and i can trust her. I am seeing her in a week and beleive she will steer me in the right direction with a trim and probobly has seen women with curl pattern changes.
Thanks again.

just thought i would post the latest hair pic..almost 3 years since i colored last. my gray is multicolored and looks dark brown in some lights, blonde in others, gray in others, medium brown in others...it is hard to know what color it really is.. but i am really glad it is lighter now since the dark brown doesn't work with the older face. bleaching was never an option for me, so here are my natural "highlights" yes i know i look like a wookie here but my face looked awful in the other pictures..

Banjo, Yes it looks great!! what is your hair texture? fine by any chance? i wish i could use something as simple as suave --- Just keep trying stuff to help bring back the softness and life to my hair and not getting the results i want.

thanks! yes my texture is fine though with the gray it got a bit more coarse. its not really coarse though. i use the suave for washing, then the fructis for leavein and la sports gel. then i do the plopping. i use deva products too but since i do my hair every day i cant spend that much. i swim every nite so cant leave that chlorine in there...
my hair is a bit different with the gray but its basically ok--i love not having to worry about roots any more or spending the time coloring it, though i did love the robt craig color...

Default Our Gray Journey Diary

I would have liked to see those pix in color too, because black and white photos don't take into account peoples' skin undertones, which does influence how good grey looks on them or not.
That said, many did have absolutely gorgeous hair, especially the curly one, and the ones who had natural texture in the hair - this always adds interest, colored or not.
@Banjo - your hair looks great - so healthy! I'm sure this must feel a lot better too and be easier to deal with especially since you're so naturally-oriented anyway. Good job, and hats off for your patience in letting long hair transition into grey.
A friend of mine who has only slightly wavy hair that she had colored to look a rich darker brown got sick of coloring(her hair is nearly white in most areas, and it got to be a royal pain each month). After she had let her natural hair grow out an inch and a half, she went a couple or three times, every couple of months, to have progressively lighter highlights put in until her natural color was far enough in so she could just let it go. Her hair is about half-way transitioned, and she wears it in a couple of braids, which with the different colors that are still left, actually look kind of cool! Her new white around her face looks lovely, and she has a warm skin tone like me. We often do have to wait until we have quite a bit of white to pull this off. I'm sure I'll do the same thing once my natural hair gets whiter(not yet though). Another couple years or so at least!
In the meantime, kudos to those who braved and are still braving this transition!

here are a couple of youtube videos of me playing banjo in a big honking old time music session at a festival in may 2013--you can see me from the back. i'm the one with the red rain coat and gray multi hair. my hair looks really crappy when i am camping, it gets a bit frizzy as i ignore it most of the time, esp since it was cold and rainy at that festival...but this is 3 years of growth. i also would like more silver but it is what it is...i fought my hair and my hair won...
