As a guy, I have a bit of a different angle. I just turned 41 but most of my gray is facial hair but I have only a few strands of gray on my head. You can only tell if you are two feet away from me. However, I shave regularly, in part because I want to help myself look young but more because I'm not into growing facial hair. With my head, however, since guys are susceptible to losing their hair, I take the approach of "I don't care what color it is, if it's there, I like it." Oddly enough, I hated having curly hair in my younger years so I wore it short for 20 years (buzzcut sometimes) but when I was 33, I noticed a few too many guys my age losing their hair so I started wearing it longer. Now I love having a head of curls. That said, I have no desire to color my hair but that's just me.

I went cold turkey. It's only been 3 months so far. My mom is at the same point but she has much more gray than me. I'm so proud of her! I thought she wouldn't make it- she has always been more into looking good than me, with the makeup and clothes and the whole nine. I'm more "natural" so having skunk stripe, for me, isn't really that big of a deal!

A lot of people wear hats, scarves, use the temporary mousse, etc.

I often pulled back the front to show off the white roots - it looked kind of cool white in the front and dark everywhere else.

Kreamer's book was an inspiration to me, as was the site goinggraylookinggreat.com (which I think no longer exists, unfortunately, but there is a site called Silver Sisters Cafe Gray, which I think grew out of that). Have you read through this whole thread? There are lots of stories of how women made the transition in different ways. Whatever you decide, good luck, and remember there are lots of gray curlies here to support you!
rustina -- the site goinggraylookinggreat exists in a different format, but her book (diana jewel author) is still out there. i found it more inspirational than kreamer's, in that it was definitely telling you specifics. very helpful hints. i got it out of my library, but even if you have to buy it, i'd recommend it as it gave sooo many tips, including clothing colors (white is out, i look like a ghost - LOL!), and makeup, and most of all, different ways to wear it while transitioning.
i also did the headbands, white around face, black in back. andi also got a lot of compliments, go figure!

myrna -- i thought i would do lowlights part way in, but then realized it would be difficult and look strange. my color would oxidize, so i'd have orangey-brown instead of black/brown, and i hate that color against my skin. then, how do you grab the same hairs? you don't, so you end up with lots of the hairs being colored.
thankfully, i figured this out and just went cold turkey. invested in lots of headbands, stretchy and plastic-type, cheap and not-so-cheap.
the time will pass anyway, so at least you will have what you want. and, i still work and my clients kind of went through it with me.
ha -- the owner of my granddaughters' daycare would admire my hair the few times i was with my daughter to pick up the girls, and finally she told my daughter i inspired her and she transitioned out and loves it. it's not for everyone, but if that is where you want to be, it's worth the transition.

I will get it tested. It'll be interesting if I find that the gray and still pigmented hair have very different properties from each other.
BTW, I did get my hair tested and it was normal porosity throughout and not at all weak or fragile. I've read some articles that claim that all gray hair is "damaged" (porous, weak, brittle), but clearly that isn't always the case.

I plopped for the first time ever today! I thought my hair was too short and it would wreck the curls but I got way more curl especially in the front. I plopped for 1 1/2 hrs and my hair was pretty close to dry. I practiced plopping my hair so I wouldn't have to struggle after I co-washed, conditioned and applied gel. Will try to get some pics on here. If it works, the first pic is when I took the t-shirt out and shook my head and did nothing else (sorry no make up, ick). 2nd two pics, I clipped my bangs back after scrunching a little. Could have used more product but its a start!

Rocking the "natural highlights" and second day hair. The hair held up through two costume changes and being up in a scrunchie several times.

Default need help going gray in Madison, WI

Ladies, I need help. I am not sure my current stylist is up for the humongous task of helping me get gray, gracefully. I dont know how to find a colorist in Madison, WI that can assist me with this. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

all you need from your stylist is a good haircut. anything else is a bonus. i was lucky in that the young woman who used to color my hair suggested i use headbands (and i also saw that in pictures from goinggraylookinggreat. my stylist was very supportive and encouraging, but really, we have to do the transition ourselves, getting tips/ideas/encouragement where we can.

Update on my gray journey @ 4 months....I'm very salt & pepper. I'm not sure how it will look when it's done, but it's on its way!

Chloe, your hair colors are very similar to mine when I transitioned: sort of a reddish brown on the colored parts, lighter at the ends, and the virgin hair coming in a cooler dark brown and white. It's weird to have that 3-toned look going on for awhile, but once it's done I think you'll like it. I love how mine has grown out! My curls were not behaving in this photo - AT ALL - but you can see my grown out s&p colors, lol!

Every time I see your photos I think my hair color may be similar to yours (hopefully!). It's amazing how much more gray I have today than last year, or 2 years ago. Do you have the "stripe" on your temples/ front?

I'm definitely whiter right around my face - the hair right above my ears is probably the whitest, but you can't always see it because the hair above it covers it up most of the time. I tend to have streaks of white in the front, and am more evenly salt and pepper in the back. When I have my hair pulled back, it is much more obvious how much whiter the front is:
