Our Gray Journey Diary

Thanks, ladies. And yeah, I'll do something. I cut my hair last week in preparation for the grow out so it is too short for an up do.
Here I am and now that I have taken a picture, I may change my mind. When I look in the mirror, I don't see this thin scraggly hair that will look even more so when it goes all gray/white. The bald spot in the part is the white coming in. It looks bright and shiny in the mirror not scraggly like this pic. However, I'm sure the pic is the truth.

At least I hope this pic posts, it has taken me an hour to figure out how to upload it.

Zinnia and chloe92us like this.
Curly: WHAT dont you like? You have lovely blue eyes, and I think they will look lovely with silver and vice versa.
I agree! I love your cut - it's very modern and young, and your make up is good, so I don't see that the white will age you.

Thank you, I need encouragement. What the white hair does is wash me out and then make all the wrinkles show up even more. But I have so enjoyed every minute in that sun damaging outdoors. Then when I color it back my eyes become more dominant. But now at 67 I am just going to accept it, I just can't dye my hair forever.

My daughter hates it and thinks she needs to council me as to what looks best on me. I am really enjoying this site tho and everyone here looks really really good.
i agree with the others, love your cut!

have you read the book, "going gray, looking great," by diana jewel? it's a great book, i got mine from the library. has lots of suggestions regarding colors, makeup, etc. she has a website but it is a newer format now, less of one than it was. however, you can join the website (it's free) and will probably get more info. i found both her book and the website supportive as i went thru this.

i stopped coloring my hair 5 years ago and there are still one or two who tell me i should dye it again. most people love it. i love it and that is all that matters. it sounds like this is something you want to do, so don't listen to others.

Curly: this is why we often need to make adjustment in our "look" when we go gray. I live in the madison, WI area, and I have not been able to find such a person, but I know there are professional image consultants that assist with this sort of thing. They are probably pricey , but so are endless salon treatments. I also think we have gotten used to thinking that dyed hair looks "young" when in fact, past a certain point it really does not. I was in a Panera's weeks ago and ther ewas a table of about 6-8 women, all with dyed hair - except one. Guess who looked stunning. She had short, pixie- like hair, and big blue eyes. The rest of the women looked washed out and dull. Start by looking around you, but have a more open "lens" or attitude! you will find, I think, that you see m any great looking women with silver hair.

Curly, I had that issue at first too with the new silver. I thought it lookd like you could see my scalp, because the new growth was white, and looked like my hair was thinning. That is a temporary issue. When more silver comes in, you dont see that any more.
RBB, yes, I have read that book, there is another one that I like better but of course I cannot think of the title. It is more about the journey and less about tips.
i tried to copy photos from goinggraylooking great that were on the internet. if they don't show up here, just paste in the link

myrna -- you are correct about seeing your scalp. in going gray looking great she says that will happen at first, something about the absence of color. and it is temporary.
i know the other book you are talking about, read it also. i preferred the going gray book because what i wanted was tips! LOL

Is this the other book you ladies are referring to? It was definitely about the journey, not tips about looking good with gray hair. I liked it.

I am very salt and pepper now, and I constantly get compliments on my hair. Young, old, men, women - and I have had SO many people ask if I dyed my hair like this, lol!

Rustina, that is the one I liked, rbb mentioned another. I liked reading about the woman's journey. Also: she took an academic approach and at one point, filled out the same profile on a dating site, one with a gray pic and one with brown; and she got more interest from the gray pic! I thought that was interesting.
Yes! I thought that was interesting, too.
