Are You Embracing or Running Away From Your Gray Hair?

I saw another woman around my age at the farmer's market the other day and she had long curly very white hair. I was so jealous. I want MORE silver/grey/white hair. Mine hasn't changed in a long time. Same amount of grey as I've had for awhile now. : (

Plenty of people dye because they don't like their natural colour, it's nothing particularly to do with ageing/ running/ 'looking fresh'. My mouse makes me look boring, pale and sick, my Rose Red makes me feel happy in the depths of winter. I stopped puling out the whites in my late thirties tho, there were too many to make it practical or sensible.

Hello everyone! Have been lurking and CG since January, I finally got on a laptop to join. My profile pic doesn't show my "natural highlights"; it's been over ten years since I permanently dyed my hair and I have quite a bit of salt with the pepper. I am 2c/3a, normal porosity (I think), medium density, BSL; since going CG, my hair has grown leaps and bounds.

When my marriage fell apart in 2007 (after almost 23 years), I used a wash out dye to help boost my self-esteem; when that washed/faded away, my adult daughters encouraged me to go natural and so I've embraced my gray. Fast forward to 2013 where I will hit the big 50 later this year and I'm about 25% gray and LOVING it! Since 2010, have dated men younger than me and current BF (who is six years my junior) lives me as I am, and I in turn love him as he is.

I choose not to dye the gray because I am very lazy, I hate going to the hairdresser, and I ruined the carpet in my bathroom when I tried it at home! Did I mention I was LAZY?
I am definitely embracing it!!! My hair is coming in silver like my mom's and my grandma's and I wouldn't want to mess that up by dyeing it.

Also, my hair is curly however my silver hair is wavy, almost straight. I hadn't notice until a co-worker thought it wasn't mine and tried to take it off my hair...LOL!

So, I have all this curly hair with silver strands that are wavy in places and somehow it works...because I "work" it!!! LOL!

Started going gray when I was 16, been coloring it ever since...a natural red-head. Let it go natural gray after I retired, cut it SHORT and dyed it a blond to help with the transition. But, it wasn't a pretty gray when it finally came in, it was almost white, ugh, and I was too young to be that white so I started adding darker lowlites to add some color around my face.
Kept that for about 3-4 years and finally had enough, I'm in my mid 60's, back to coloring my hair red, letting it grow and as a result, found my curls as it grew out and found this board hi all!
2C * Normal Porosity * Medium Density * Chin Length

Still playing with products ( using mostly Deva right now)

Working on finding my inner curl.
So far, I'm still taking after my mother's side of the family. I have 1 gray hair.

Since my eyebrows get a big gray hair in each one, I dye them because my hair hardly gets anything yet, I am 52. One of these days when I am ready, but not yet.
I'm embracing fully now. It's rapidly graying, and I like the color it's changing to. I even got a compliment on the color at our neighborhood Christmas party. I think my biggest push is from my daughter. When your 16 year old says your hair is cool, that's a big motivator.

I am 52 and I have totally embraced my gray hair. I have had gray hair since high school. I dyed my hair (semi permanent) until I was 45. Now the front of my hair is totally white with the back mixed.
I have one problem though. I have been natural for 3 years now and I want to do a protective hair style for the winter. I really would love crochet braids but it is so difficult to find gray/salt pepper hair. Any suggestions?
I am embracing it at this point in my life. I tried 2 other times but guess I was not ready then. I am now retired and it has been much easier since my growout contrast is drastic. I have been on the journey for 11 months now and still have a ways to go before fully transitioned since I only trim the length letting the layers grow out. I am loving the fact that I no longer have to color my roots every 2 weeks.

looks great! 11 months is really good. i remember getting to 9 months and feeling like i was starting to get there, so 11 months is definitely more than on your way.

Not sure if I want to keep running. Had my most recent dyejob Sept. 20th, before the big wedding hullaballoo. Now I'm debating whether I want to keep dyeing. My hair condition has gotten significantly better in the last year just with cutting out heat and dyeing it less often. My conflict is; I'm not sure I'm ready for a big cut, but I don't like the thought of growing it out without one.

I'm also not sure how severe it'll be, but I've got a good bit of white and grey for being not-quite-30. Not sure how long I can tolerate being on this fence.. lol. Here's a recent photo... I can see the silver growing in along my part pretty clearly but I guess we always focus on our own insecure spots.

if you really want to stop dyeing your hair, then just go thru it. the time will pass anyway. from my own experience it's harder the longer you wait -- more white/gray/silver.....
you will have a beautiful pepper and salt look, both that and white/silver hair is very striking on a young face.
find hairstyles to get thru it, i wore headbands and got so many compliments. then after 9 months i cut my hair a couple of inches shorter than my normal hairstyle just to get rid of most of the color. everyone is different. i knew i was unhappy with dyeing -- the look, the cost, the time....... and i am so happy i stopped.
again, it's a very personal choice.

It doesn't seem that way to me looking at others but on me it was discouraging. Having this scar on my face probably didn't help. Maybe when that heals it'll be easier. My growing dissatisfaction probably took a mammoth jump after that. I guess I cat handle both at once. Here I am post dye. i wasn't willing to pixie, either, which is what took me so long, years, to start the transition.
i never used the box dye, but my daughter has a friend who is a hair colorist so for 10+ yrs she came to my house every 3rd week, would do the roots, then leave and i'd wash it out 1/2 hr later. (prior to that i went to a salon, started once every 6 weeks, then every 4 wks, then 3....) the relative convenience of her coming to my house probably 'enabled' me to keep coloring. however, she was extremely helpful with suggestions when i started transitioning.

Your new color looks really good on you, Chupie and I can understand the feeling that gray is aging. Some times or days I look in the mirror and see all the wrinkles and some times I think the white growth looks ok with my skin and brings out my eyes but that may be wishful thinking. For myself tho, I am just no longer willing to deal with those white roots showing up so soon after a hair color so I trudge on thru this seemingly long process. I am not willing to cut my shrinking curly hair any shorter than it is. Since your natural hair is not such a contrast, your color should be easier to maintain.

Chupie, I am allergic to henna and indigo and my last stint with them nearly landed me in the hospital. Yet the other day, I was having one of my "moments" as I looked at my rapidly expanding and growing gray hairs and nearly ran (not walked) to the nearest Indian grocery store to grab as many boxes of henna and indigo off the shelf as I could get my hands on! The moment passed but I was oh so close. In the end, the messiness of henna and indigo (which I didn't feel like fooling with) and the thought of potentially spending the Thanksgiving holidays in the ER stopped my procession back to henna and indigo. LOL!

Anyway, I say all that to say that I totally get it. Everyone says I have a young face so I can really pull off gray hair but I don't see that when I look in the mirror sometimes...when I look and don't like what I see and want to scream and run for the dye. Then there are other days when I feel that my gray is beautiful. Some of my grays are white (the streak I have in the front is pure white) and some are silver and actually sparkle among my non-gray, black tresses. I try to focus on what I like about them when I start getting those feelings but I wonder if one day those tricks won't work and I'll give in and dye like you did...Only time will tell!
