First the Silver, Now the Curls

Hello everyone! I've been a lurker for a week or so, so thought this section might be appropriate for my formal intro to Curltalk. Onto the journey!

I started going gray in my late 40's (I'm now 55). I fought the good fight with various bottles, but my hair had other ideas (any and all color was out and fading within 2-3 weeks)! Tired of the expense and after becoming a Grandma , I decided that maybe the color or lack thereof, wasn't so bad, so I let it be! I'm now mostly silver.

After a couple of really big BCs (as in short-short pixies), I let it grow out. It had a lot of wave - it always has - but also, as was the lifelong norm, it was totally untameable and frizzy. The heat and humidity here in TX didn't help much. My Daughter suggested the sea salt products to "manage" it, and that's how I discovered my hair was actually VERY curly. Who knew?!?! It was so much so, that the first time I wore it to work using one of those "beach wave" products, everyone thought I had gotten a perm! Around the same time, I quit using any and all heat on my hair. Unfortunately, after a year or so, the salt and menopause took their toll. My hair was tremendously dry and breaking off fast, which of course, only enhanced the over the top, poof. (My Kids, Bless their Hearts, both inherited the same type of hair and refer to our frizz/volume as " the poof factor.")

Just after Christmas, I decided to put it out of its misery, and had it layered and cut to just above my shoulders. Devoid of it's weight and damage, it sprung to life...mostly a 10 poof factor! Shortly thereafter, I saw the "Curly Girl Handbook," on Amazon. As I contemplated buying it, my eyes strayed to the picture of my Grandmother that's on my desk. Her hair was short as always, but I remembered she also always had perms in a failed attempt to control it. As I studied that picture, I realized for the first time, I had her hair ~ finer than frog hair with cotton candy volume that could rise to the Heavens regardless of any weight from length! At that point, it occurred to me, "what if?" What if our hair is really naturally curly, and we all just never knew how to take care of it?!?! I bought the book and devoured it!

That brings us to today. Even though I've been unknowingly on the transitional road by eliminating color and any heat applications for the last few years and also had already discovered that I didn't need combs or brushes, or to wash my hair any more than every 3 or 4 days, I've only been both sulfate and cone free for about 3 weeks! What a difference this whole "Curly Girl" method makes! My hair really is curly! Who knew?!?!
I'm having so much fun with all of this. It's like having someone else's hair on my head!!! Everything I try brings different results. Granted, my hair is wild as ever, but now it's curls and swirls unfurled. Instead of fighting with it, I just go with whatever it wants to do. We're FINALLY, after all these years, learning to Love each other!
That's great! I hope you continue to have a good time with your hair.

great story!
i, too, thought i had wavy, frizzy hair til i also stumbled upon the curly girl book (this was back in 2005, so i had the first edition, still the most helpful book i had ever come across). after one week on cg, it turned out that i also have curly hair, got so many compliments just within a week.

and now when your grandkids look at your photo, they'll know that grandma, and maybe them, has curly hair!

Exactly! I've been trying to talk my Daughter into going au natural, but so far, no luck! I'm hoping when I see her in a couple of weeks (She's out of state and will be giving us a new Family member.), or rather she sees me, she'll reconsider working with, rather than against, the poof! My Son is currently taking the shave it off route that I used to do, as a means of control. It's so easy, and would be perfect for a new Mama.
My hair looks a lot like your picture, only a bit wilder. I'm hoping as I continue on this journey and we (me n' the loopy locks) get to know each other better (how weird is that?!?!), it'll settle down and look as healthy and wonderful as yours does!

The reactions I'm getting are varied, but a ton of fun. I get everything from compliments, to stares. I guess it's favorable, as people do seem to be smiling at me more than normal. Last week, I ran into an acquaintance at Walmart, and we talked for 10 minutes before he even realized who I was ~
"Oh my gosh...Deb! I didn't recognize you!"
Lol! I'm incognito!

thanks. as you follow cg more and more, it seems that most people's hair becomes curlier, mine did. and you learn about your hair, what it likes and doesn't.

i've had that, too -- people did not recognize me at first, but it was because of the white/gray.... it is like going incognito!

my daughter did follow me with cg, but not immediately, but within a year, it might have been even only a few months. but she lives only 1/2 hr away, so she saw me more. and now, my almost 4 yr old granddaughters (identical twins with 3c curls) are cg!! LOL! seriously, their hair is great and my daughter follows cg with them. lucky girls.

enjoy your journey, loved your story!
2C * Normal Porosity * Medium Density * Chin Length

Still playing with products ( using mostly Deva right now)

Working on finding my inner curl.
Wow, what a great hair testimony! I have been CG for maybe a year now... And while I believe my hair is better than it was when I was using sulfates and cones quite frequently, I have not had the results I was hoping for. My curls aren't as bouncy, and I still have quite a bit of frizz.

My hair is rather long and mostly 2B. Most of my gray is on top, coming from the crown, and it tends to be wavy/sometimes straight instead of curly. It also hangs in the front so it's what I see the most when I look in the mirror. I'm beginning to suspect that my hair (especially the gray) is high porosity. I've been reading that I should try protein treatments, which I haven't tried yet.

I'm also considering a drastic (for me) hair cut. I like the comments I get about my long hair, but it may be too much. I haven't mastered plopping, and it's mostly b/c my hair is so long. I'm thinking of getting layers, which I've never done before, but it seems to be a good option for curly girls.

Long story short - I'm still trying to figure out what works best for me!
layers is a good idea for curlies, just make sure they are LONG layers!!

you might benefit from a hair analysis to learn about your hair properties. makes it a little easier to know which ingredients work for you and which don't. it's not an exact science so it does take some trial and error with products, routines, but once you figure it out, it's great!
