You are all so inspirational! THANK YOU!!!
I've just begun growing my grey and only have about 1/2 inch of natural color, but I am so motivated to keep it going after reading all your posts and support of one another.

I see so many beautiful ladies with natural grey hair that I can't wait to see what mine really looks like...but I will be patient! It's like slowly unwrapping a present!!!

MY CONCERN: Do I cut it short during the growth period, or do I leave it longer? What is your experience with this?

I'm finding that my hair is so much more manageable at a longer length and think I want to go even longer than my current shoulder-length curls, but right now my hair is damaged...

Your advice and experiences will help guide me. THANK YOU!
there is no right or wrong answer, only what works for you.
you say your hair is more manageable longer, so...
and you say your hair is damaged......

some people cut their hair very short and are so unhappy with the short cut that they color again -- if your face looks good with it short, and you have damaged hair, then you may want to cut some of it.... others keep their length and take it slowly.

i initially kept my length, then after 9 months of growth i cut it a little shorter than photo -- and that helped encourage me while the rest grew out. i did use headbands during the first 9 months and that helped tremendously.

a good book to read is Going Gray Looking Great by diana jewel. she has great tips for wearing gray hair. it is not a curl-friendly book, but you can take the helpful tips and integrate your curly regimen with it.

Yes, as rbb said, it is what will work for you. And good for you for going natural. I have been on this journey for almost 13 months now and it is often not easy but is so worth it. My avi is about a month old and I am still not done.

I initially had slightly damaged (and thinning) hair so I trimmed alot last February and have then trimmed about " per month to get those ends off. As you can see it grows very slowly and my goal is for the ends to just reach my collarbone in front. I am happy with this method for me. And I second the book recommendation.

Poo: Have to admit I have recently become a Wen convert. Love it. I have always had problems with my hair "hanging" right, curling uniformly and destorting the perimeter line. Wen makes it hang evenly.
RBB thanks for the feedback. Your hair is absolutely gorgeous. I just received the book "Going Gray, Looking Great" and can't wait to get into it. Thanks for the recommendation.

Your comments have helped me decided on keeping my hair long for now. At home I pull my hair up into a scrunchie on top of my head-it preserves the curl while I'm sleeping in case I want to get another day out of the style. I've grown accustomed to this look and think I'll try it out with a headband and take it public! If i cut it short, this wouldn't work.

THANK YOU!!!
Hi CurlyInParadise! You're color is coming in beautifully! Thanks for your feedback on cutting.

I'm fortunate to have a lot of hair and I have found that using clips to lift at the roots where my hair parts naturally helps to keep the roots under the color, for now! I'm in the early stages so i won't be able to do that too much longer. RBB's headband idea is going to serve me well.

I hope my hair grows just as fast now as it did when I was getting it colored. I was on the 3 week schedule -- it was like a drug. And now I feel like I'm in rehab!!! I keep thinking I will get weak at some point in the process but so far not! I have to keep coming back to this amazing community for encouragement.

When my hair grows another inch or two I will probably do what you've been doing to trim off the damage. And when my new color gets to your length I will chop it there and be totally grey!

Off to read my new book. Thank you thank you thank you!
thanks for the compliment! and i'm glad my suggestions were helpful. the transition period can be frustrating, but it will pass. i found all those tips to make it easier.

I kept my hair a bit shorter while I was growing out my gray. Once I got about chin length, I had all the my frazzled dyed ends chopped off. The process took me 14 or so months. Once I had my dye free ends, I started to grow out my hair. At the moment I am at shoulder length and want another inch.

Do what works best for you and remember that with time, anything you do not like about your hair can be changed.

Definitely do what you are comfortable with. Mine was past shoulder length when I grew it out and I'm glad that I kept the length. It just worked better for me when I had my hair back in half-ups or headbands, or just pulled back altogether in a ponytail or bun. I have been without any coloring in my hair for several years, and I still have a lot of brown underneath near the nape of my neck. So I am salt, pepper and brown.
