Grey shampoo

Those of you who are all (or almost all) grey - do you use shampoo for grey hair? If so, how grey were you when you started and is it something you use all the time or just occasionally?
My hair is at the lovely half and half stage, I don't know if I'm imagining that the grey has a yellowy tinge to it, most of the time it just looks steely grey but sometimes I think I see yellow, it could just be different lighting, I don't know.

for me, the best way to tell if my hair is starting to yellow is to look in a mirror outside, even in the car mirror.
i use ardell red/gold corrector in a conditioner. a few drops (maybe 15 per ounce, more or less), shake it and apply in shower, then rinse. i make up a half full bottle of conditioner at a time. you can also use this in a shampoo. i buy it online at sally's.
i had tried several different brands of blue conditioner but they ALWAYS left my hair dry and if i used too much, the dreaded blue hair, LOL!
there are a couple of threads on this in this forum, do a search and see if you can come up with them.
if you are not sure if is yellowing, it never hurts to use it and see.

I've got enough colours going on on my head atm, I definitely don't want blue as well! I've never heard of correctors for hair, guess that's more reading coming up, it just never stops does it?! I did have a bit of a look before I posted, figured there must be something already here, but it was the middle of the night here and I couldn't be much bothered if I'm honest.
Thanks for posting, I'm glad you're here, you always have answers for me.

glad to be of help (i work from home, so i am always ready for a 'break,' lOL!), i wish i had the answers.

doing a quick search the only thread i came up with is this, you can skim thru it, it's long, but it does have lots of posts about yellowing hair:

Anyone with gray hair use a violet shampoo?

i know there were more threads, so maybe try a search with gray/yellowing hair.:

Ditto everything RBB said. I use the red/gold corrector in conditioner (it doesn't turn hair blue). It is normally used in salons when bleaching or lightening hair, to get rid of yellow or orange tones. I mix up a whole bottle at a time and use it about once a week or so. I don't use shampoo at all and the conditioners for grey hair were super drying. The above thread that RBB posted is a good one.

Thanks for the link rbb, I'll do some reading tomorrow. I remembered I'm going to the hairdressers next week so I'll ask her opinion on whether I'm yellowing or not, she's been pretty helpful so far with my grey journey.
Interesting you both had the same experience with the conditioners making hair dry, I wonder why that would be. My hair's been very dry lately so at least I know not to go down that road.

starmie, don't be afraid to use a blue rinse -- once won't hurt, and my guess is you'll be surprised at how much better your hair is. as for the part is not grey/white, it will maybe tone down any brassiness, but you won't see it really. so just give it a try. in fact, take before/after photos so you can see the difference.

i remember not realizing how yellow my hair had gotten til i started with these. initially i used it once a week, now once every 2, 3 weeks.

i've read that you can also use bluing that people add to the their laundry? never did, no idea how it would work. you can google it. one of the conditiones (blue) i had tried gave my scalp, neck, shoulders, wherever it landed in the shower, a bad reaction -- itching like crazy. i never had a reaction to any hair product before, so of course after i tried it a 2nd time and saw it was definitely the cause, i tossed it. cannot remember which one it was.

I had some red in my hair (dye and then henna) which is now looking very orangey and very different to my natural colour, do you think some the brightness of it would be toned down?
I have issues with my scalp anyway (psoriasis) I'm always wary of new things, though tbh, products generally don't bother it. Apart from the dye of course, which has sent me on my grey travels.

any blue shampoo or the ardell red/gold corrector will correct that, tone down the brassiness, make it a bit more ashy-toned. that is what the red/gold corrector was designed for.
if you cannot get it by you, i have a vague memory of seeing another brand of red/gold corrector that i imagine does the same. so just do another search if you have to. :-)

I know some Ardell products are available here so I'll have a look next week when I'm shopping again, I would think there'll be something similar if it's not available, it seems the way to go for me. I read that thread you linked last night, don't think I'm keen to use any of the actual shampoos or conditioners after reading it, they all seem pretty dying from the sounds of things.

if you can get ardell there, then in my mind there is no question, ardell wins, hands down!

Had a look last night and couldn't see it in any of my usual online haunts, only ebay with shipping twice the price of the product, nothing new there, sigh.
Will pick my hairdressers brains next week.

Like my profile says, I usually use Jhirmack shampoo once a week to keep any yellowing at bay and it worked fine. I couldn't find it at the store so I bought Pantene's Silver Expressions instead. I used it and my hair looked different. Not bad, but a bit darker. So I used it again and now it looks steel gray where before it was very white in front and it's definitely darker in back. I'm not liking this look. I'm ditching the Pantene, but how do I get my nice white hair back? Does it have to grow out again or will it just fade? Is there a product I could use?

Thanks for any input.

i don't know the answer, but i will tell you about my experience. before i found and started using ardell red/gold corrector in my conditioner, i tried several blue conditioners and my hair did turn blue once or twice. it did just fade over a week or two. never used the pantene so i can't say for sure it will fade, but i am thinking it will.

maybe if you use a clarifying shampoo it'll fade more quickly.

Thanks, rbb, for your reply. I've used VO 5 clarifying shampoo twice and I even used Dawn dish soap this morning. I'm seeing a difference, but I hate to use this harsh stuff on my hair. I found Jhirmack yesterday at the store and will continue to use it once a week as before. But I will wait until my original white color is restored. All I can say is that the Pantene turned my hair the color of a used ash tray with only two uses. Maybe my hair is just too porous.

Well, a few months down the track I have finally tried some purple shampoo. Couldn't find any corrector here and my hairdresser didn't know of anything so I forgot about it for a while and then started thinking about it again last week. Did a bit more reading and bought an Australian brand of blonde shampoo, that's also used for grey hair, and used it for the first time this morning. Was quite horrified at the intense purple colour and a teeny bit scared of actually putting it on my hair but all is good. I could see no difference at all if I'm honest, but my SO came home from work and asked what I'd done as he thought the grey looked more silvery and no longer has the 'browny tinge' to it. I guess we'd call that a success! It hasn't toned done the orangey dyed bits but I might try just shampooing those bits and see what happens. It seems quite a nice shampoo, didn't feel drying or stripping at all, though I don't think I'll be using it every wash like the sales assistant suggested I could!

it sounds like it did work, you most likely need to do it a few times to see the full results since you never used anything before. i remember the first time i used one, actually, it was when i went for a haircut they did it there, it was better but still lots of yellow.

just be careful not to overdo it, but don't be afraid to use it again next wash. i am sure the next time you use it will be much better, then after that go carefully. i always used the conditioners instead of the shampoo so i could leave it in while i showered, then rinsed all out.

i have to add that when my hair is looking good color-wise, i'm more pleased with the overall look. so that is a bonus. once all the yellow/orange/brassiness is gone you'll be happier with your hair. the color is important.

I was never one for dyeing my hair different colours when I was younger, I only ever coloured to cover the grey so am very wary of things being too different (and potentially bad) so am treading carefully in case I turn out a bit too blue/purple! Such a chicken.
I can't wait for all the colour to be gone, you're right, I'm sure I'll be much happier. I'm surprisingly pleased with the way it's growing in, initially I was disappointed it was so dark, but I've always had dark hair and that's what suits me so I'm ok with it.
