my curly problems

Iv always had naturally curly hair, but when I was little I had tight springy curls. But I wanted the ideal perfect look and wanted to get a perm and messed my hair up. So growing up I was always straightening my hair only making the problem worse. Finally I decided to stop straightening it and my curls are coming back nicely, the only problem OS there is NOTHING that will hold my hair except gel. I just hateee how hard it makes my hair. I tried the devacurl product but it didn't do ANYTHING for my hair besides make it smell awesome. My hair also always looks dry. Please can ANYONE give me tips, ideas, and or products to use for my hair. :(
