Going to start from scratch

Since high school 6 years ago, I have been dying my hair pretty much every 2 months. Recently I colored it with henna--big mistake! I loved the red for about a week, and now it's a disaster after trying to henna/indigo over it to get it to a brown. Recently, I've also started noticing split hairs, and my hair seems very fragile from all the coloring, straight ironing, shampooing, and blow drying. So, I have decided to start from scratch.

Right now my roots are about an inch long, but some of them took the color from the most recent henna disaster while a majority didn't, so I figure I'll give my hair 1-2 whole months from now until I cut it all off.

Now when I say cut it all off, I mean trim it to an inch all over. I've done this in the past, and I know I have the right face shape to pull it off for as long as I plan on pulling it off. The hopes are that I will buzz it all off and that's the last time I'll cut it until I need to trim the back to prevent the mullet look.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I'm doing this to help keep my hair in the best shape possible while I grow it out. I'm going to need SERIOUS support while I grow it out. I'm going to have super strong urges to color it, which I really hope I can refrain from doing for once. Also, advice on the best ways to care for my hair as it grows longer will be appreciated. I hope that doing this will give my hair a fresh start so it will be healthier than it ever has been in my entire life, as even when I was little it was brushed and blow-dried and lemon-lightened.

So there it is! Wish me luck. I will post a new topic called something like "growing out from a pixie" and keep it as a chronicle once I actually cut it.

Good luck. I can't wait to see your progress.

I was in a similar situation. After thermally straightening my hair for 2 or so years, it was horribly damaged. I cut it off. Not quite pixie short, but it was probably 1 to 2 inches on top at the shortest layer.

April 2007 will be two years for me. I could kick myself now for all the color abuse I have continued to do. While my hair is porous, which makes attemtping to color so unpredictable, I don't think my hair is too horribly damaged, but I know as I continue to let it grow, the problem will only get worse if I continue my haphazard hair color ways.

I did a fotki of my progression. It's fun to watch your hair grow and change! (yeah, I'm a hair nerd).

Oh yeah, I forgot to add, I've done this before (chopping all my hair off), so it won't be something new to me, but what WILL be new is not dying it, if I can refrain. That'll be the hardest part of the ordeal!

I had to stop dying my hair. Sometimes I miss red but it's nice to not have to touch up the roots or worry about damage I have to say.
I have my SO talk me down if I start talking about red hair again

Good luck! I can't wait to see the progress in both words and pics

If it smells good put it in your hair, if it tastes good spit it out!
I've done something very similar to you, The Scientist. I was abusing my hair with hair color, the straightneing iron, harsh shampoos daily, etc. until I found this site. I took better care of my hair and then used henna to try to repair the damage and my hair reacted very badly to it so I cut off most of the length and have been trying to grow it out since. I haven't dyed mt hair at all for the last year. I still have a few inches of damage(which happens to be red while the rest of my hair is my natural dark hair color so it's very obvious) but I've just been gradually trimming my hair every few months so I can still gain some length. Anyways, I wish you luck with your growing out journey!

my DH is now helping me color my hair, he gets the back and underneath where i cannot see the roots. i've been very lucky with hair color-robt craig is great and i have never heard of anyone having wrecked hair with it. it is deposit only so it can get darker than you want but other than that i've heard only good reports. i've been using RC every 5 weeks or so for roots and touching up--this for the last 2 yrs so far with no problem. good luck with your hair--no more straightening please!!

You've got my support. I'm currently doing a no coloring in 2007 challenge, too.

Good luck!

good luck! While I'm not chopping my hair off, I am restraining myself from coloring it which has been super difficult but very possible. Dye has not touched my hair since August!
In DESPERATE need of a haircut.
I'm in a "no dying" stage as well. Almost a year now, the roots are becoming more obvious, but eventually It'll get long enough to even out (never gone shorter than chin-length, don't think I'd like it )

Good luck scientist!

Wow! It's been awhile since I have updated. I haven't taken the "big chop" yet, and I'm having serious doubts about it. I certainly won't be dying it again, so it's just a matter of waiting and waiting and waiting for it to get to a length where I will be willing to cut it off. But the more time passes, the slower it seems to grow, and the more frustrated and displeased I am with it. I am having hair esteem issues!

My hair is growing faster now, maybe your hair though grows slower this time of year? I do remember growing out my coloring seemed to take longer than any other growing out in my life though. Watched pot syndrome I guess.

I know what you mean about dyed hair taking forever to grow out, I'm waiting for my "virgin" hair to make it to at least chin length before chopping (hopefully I'll manage to make it further) but it's taking so long! Plus I'm starting to notice a lot more grey hairs than I thought I had, I'm starting to itch for the dye bottle.

My new mantra: "I can make grey hair look sexy!"
