Growing out fine/delicate hair? Trim?

I'm trying to grow my fine hair out from having shorter cuts and blunt bangs at one point. The layer of the bangs is just to my chin now, if I stretch it out.

The last cut I got was... terrible. The stylist, someone who gave me great short hair cuts, thinned the heck out of it AND razored in a whole bunch of uneven layers. It doesn't look great.

My hair is all finally long enough to put it in a single "loop" bun (like where you don't pull your ponytail all the way through) at the back of my head, with several bobby pins here and there to keep the bangs/nape in place. The longest layers are just past my shoulders, maybe an inch? If I leave it in a ponytail the thinned/razored layers look awful, like a sad wet cat's tail.

The problem is, I'm seeing a lot of shorter hairs sticking up now... and I'm worried that my very fine, easily broken hair is getting damaged by pulling it tightly back (tight is the only way to get a bun right now). So I've stopped putting it back... but that means I have to look at my crazy stringy layers! As for soft headbands, they don't stay on my head - my hair is low-porosity and they just slip right off my head without a bunch of clips which, again, I'm concerned are breaking my hair.

I made an appointment with our local "awesome curly stylist" Beverly Neeland (who came recommended on here), but I'm a teensy bit nervous about a trim. I really want these layers evened out... but it also seems like it hasn't grown in forever. I'm afraid to put it up, but it looks baaaaad when it is down.

I'm stuck! I don't hate having short hair, but I feel like my being OK with that will keep me from ever having long hair again. What to do? Or just words of support, LOL... Maybe a good hair cut will make a world of difference?

Any other curly gals with this baby-fine breakage problem? Solutions?

Hair grows in cycles. Not all of the shorter hairs are from breakage, some of them are new growth. Of course, others are the "thinned" hair, etc.

Why don't you see what the new stylist has to say?? She may be able to give you a cut that starts to "even" things out. While you want your hair longer, it may be better to let her cut it, rather then trim it, if it starts to look good. It's nicer to have good, shorter hair, then "odd" looking longer hair. It may take a while (and a few haircuts), but new stylist may be able to get it all in order for you.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago: a terrible haircut (kind of mullet-like) that had some layers that were no more than 1.5" long! I went for haircuts every 2-3 months with a stylist I trusted who grew it all out to chin/above shoulder length looking okay, and have since been growing it longer. Now I go for a cut at Devachan every 5-6 months; she's really just cut my back hairs (which are 2b-c, and stick out from the bottom of my 3b hair) and barely shaping the rest while it grows in. It's taken some time, but my hair is healthy and finally back where I want it to be, length-wise . . . nearly there, style-wise! Just be patient, it will come, even if your hair is fine. I do recommend using a silk scrunchie to pull it back, as this will minimize breakage.

Thanks, MaggieT. What about those "ribbon" style hair ties, the markless ones that look like a slip of ribbon that's knotted into a loop? They feel gentler than traditional hair elastics so far... But again, I'm afraid to just pull it too tight, no matter what the hair tie, and break it that way.

I think as long as they're smooth and you don't pull your hair too tight, those are fine. FYI you can make them yourself by buying elastic by the yard at your sewing store!

Thanks! Good idea. OK, last question, I swear...

How do you make them stay in? I have very fine, smooth (low porosity) hair, and most hair ties, clips, bands, etc. that I put just sliiiiiide right out, either right away or over the course of an hour or so. I use some bobby pins that a MUA friend gave me, they actually hold my hair, so I use those sometimes. But again, I'm trying not to pin/clip my hair because I feel like that always pulls at it when I take them out.

Maybe I should just be satisfied with my hair hanging free, and a high loose bun for sleep that is always gone by morning!

Bosanbo, I think we have very similar hair -- my pineapple bun is always gone (or mostly gone) by morning. I just wrap things tight enough to stay in, I guess, and have grown out my front layers enough that they mostly stay back! I also just saw that Sally's sells plastic bobby pins, which are supposed to be great for fine hair -- I'm going to get some next week and see! Oh, also, have you tried fabric headbands? These are gentle and work great for me, whether I leave other hair down or put it in a bun.

I know, MaggieT, I've decided to hairstalk you...

I've only found one fabric headband that will stay in, and I wear it for hot yoga/hangout time/whatever. I tried wearing it overnight with my loose knot, and they both fell out, LOL. I think it's the shape of my head. Stuff slides right off the back.

I will look for the plastic pins, thanks. Let me know what you think?

I see Beverly also...I hope you like her! She is a wealth of knowledge about curly hair, plus runs a totally green salon so you always know her products are gentle. Another thing I love about her is her lending library...you can borrow products from it to see if you like them before committing. I would definitely take advantage of that service if I lived closer.

Tip...park across the street at the mall...the parking at the bank building is ridiculous! Or, park on the street if you can get it (shouldn't be a problem on the weekend).

Hope your cut is fabulous!

The cut worked so well! Oh thank goodness, no weird sections drooping out from below...

I live in the area, so I knew about the mall parking. And yes, Beverly is fabulous! I'm a bicycle-lovin' scientist, so she and I had tons to talk about. I appreciate her emphasis on green/simple products, because I developed a lot of sensitivites over the past year due to illness. She let me try Jessicurl stuff, and I'm still seeing how I like that.

Oh yay! Glad you liked her...doesn't she have the most amazing hair? And after shoving it up in a bike helmet! My hair would look like I'd shoved it up in a bike helmet. Ha!

Got pics of the new do?

Before and After. The before is just... well, I tried not to hide my problems from her! Now the bottom layer curls as evenly as the top, and I don't get "chunks" around my face.

I can still put it in a little ponytail, too, with the help of two or three bobby pins (I got some gentle ones, yay). So that means it will still be easy to grow it out and keep it out of my face for work (archaeology).

Thank you! Still looking forward to those former bangs being past chin length, though...

I'm always impressed at how a good hair cut can remove hair, but still make me look like I have *more* than when I started.
