Bra strap length, for those who want to reach it

My hair has been shoulder length for 4 years. It took me a really long time to realize I'm too rough with my hair and the length that I gain, I pull out.

Now I'm going to be gentle with my hair and moisturize it often. I've decided to do protective styling, I'm going to braid/twist my hair and leave it in. After two weeks I'm going to co-wash my hair, I'll be doing this for 2 months. When 2 months are over I will then shampoo my hair and start the process all over again.
Hey, I really like your idea about the being gentle thing. Even though my hair is long I'm still going for longer. I found that so far products that "nourish" your hair helped me a lot. I used to have a Bob and now its past my armpits

I'm curious about the two months without shampoo? That sounds really itchy to me. And remember keeping a clean scalp is important to hair growth.

& if you need a trim, do that first! Maintenance from that fresh start is easier than nursing dead ends.

The thing that I have decided to do is go back to doing the things I did when I big chopped. Those things were basically co-washing my hair at least twice a week at minimal and just staying basic products. As far as growth I don't really have a set length, I just want to see how long I can grow it.

I've been natural for almost 3 yrs now too and I'm still kinda clueless to what my hair likes. I was on a protien-over-kill for the last month or so and didn't realize it. My hair was dry, brittle and braking off fast and i couldnt figure out why. By now I'm in recovery mode babying my hair. I wanna cry a little bit. I was so igmorant to the signs but not intentionally though. Any tips for a good recovery from using too much protien? My hair is currently 2 inches past my collar bone.

Protective styling is good to preserve length but you also want to learn how to care for & grow your hair as is so you wont have to rely on ps-ing. I cant even tell you how many people ive seen grow their hair mid back/waist length with braids or weaves and wore their hair out for a cpl months and it ALL broke right back off!

My sister got the fast growing hair and I got the slow, so it seems to take forever to grow out. It doesn't break off or get split ends, just grows super slow. It does shed alot tho, mostly due to thyroid and other hormone issues. I take biotin and lots of other supplements and it seems to help.
It's kind of stuck just above bra band length wet. I just gave it a trim and will let it grow over the summer and hopefully get some length by fall.
I haven't used shampoo in many years and think my hair grows better and is healthier with condition washing.

My hair is high porous and I thought It was a bad thing, but then people told me that it's not and just because your hair feels dry doesn't mean it is. I remember hearing from my mom that if your hair makes noise when you shake it then its dry and if it doesn't then it's not dry.

I think the perspective depends on the community/ hair type you are 'hanging about with'. Plenty of straight and slightly wavy long hairs CO-wash exclusively and stretch washes far more than they ever did with shampooing, partly because their scalp is pumping out less sebum now it's not being stripped and irritated, and partly because their hair is less dry, damaged or tangled. Many curly girls wash more often, but not necessarily because the scalp itself has become unclean, but because of product accumulation or because hair looks a mess/ can't brush it out.

The right CO-wash product can get most hairs/ scalps as clean as shampoo from sebum or heavy oilings, I use Inecto which is fairly light, actually lathers slightly and literally leaves my hair 'squeaky' - I've CO-washed heavy coconut treatments and another time unbelievably greasy rats tails from not washing for over a week when sick. I've worn my hair straight afterwards and received compliments about how glossy and healthy my hair looked, which I would not get if it looked greasy, dull or full of dandruff.

I don't use CO-wash to add moisture I like a clean fresh feeling, I do it to avoid stripping my skin (atopic eczema/ contact dermatitis) and to avoid my porous hair poufing from the pH/ polarity of shampoo. So it may be different using a 'proper' cleansing conditioner with added oils, glycerin or water soluble cones, I have no experience of that. It might also be different if you have a tendency to scalp problems, definitely seborrhoeic dermatitis should be cleansed regularly.

Remember you can remove even heavy stage make up better with a good cleansing oil or cleansing lotion than you can with most foaming face washes, both oils and lotions can rinse everything clean with water due to the added emulsifiers, exactly the same as the emulsifiers in CO-wash products.
