Default Short Hair Protective Styles

I've been dying to try Havana twists or yarn twists but its gonna take convincing to get my parents to shell out the cash for me to buy the supplies. What type of diy protective styles do you ladies rock? I have about 4-5in of hair. My minitwists aren't long enough to hang the way I want them to...or maybe I did them badly the last time? If you have any simple suggestions, let me know

Yarn doesn't cost much at all and I do my yarn twists/braids myself. I do mini twists at the moment for a protective style and do you do your mini twists on wet or dry hair? How small are your mini twists?

Last time I did them on damp hair because I hate working on my hair freshly washed(shrinkage!). I think the issue might be that I need a hold product. What do you use?

I mini twists on dry hair. I flat twist it or braid it and use rubberbands to stretch whatever I have to do hehe
I use curl and style milk by shea moisture I love this stuff and I twists away.I do add this and let it dry a bit and I add oil to my ends.. You can try eco-styler gel for extra hold.

I put in some yarn braids that I really love but now that I bought some trusting product, I'll definitely try mini twists again!

Over the summer, I did Senegalese twists on my 5 inches of hair, which I absolutely loved. I even did them myself so that I wouldn't have to worry about spending a lot of money getting it done when I didn't exactly know how long it would last, and now I have Havana twists.

But I did have trouble with blending after my first wash with the Senegalese twists. My hair started poofing out the more I washed it...I was so sad. Lol. But I would definitely do it again; I like keeping my hair in protective styles especially for school when I'm extra lazy and don't feel like dealing with it all the time.

Hope this helps!

Since this is my first time braiding it myself, my braids aren't as code to my scalp as they could be in the center and back so I'm worried about washing them and then having to redo that whole chunk

Yes try dry shampoo instead. The yarn soaks up quite a bit..When I washed I just focused on the scalp used a toothbrush and sprayed with water and pat dry..It can be done if you wash the whole thing just try to sit under the dryer to let it dry fast since the yarn will be waited down..
