I need a pep talk!

I scheduled a haircut appointment in two weeks, and I need support to keep growing my hair out. The ends are all scraggly and the layers are all weird, but a trim should do the trick. The thing is it's been getting pretty hot lately, and I hate to have my hair on my neck when it's hot. I also hate when my hair touches my shoulders or back, so I'm probably going to put it up in a ponytail a lot. I'm starting to think that there's not much of a point to having long hair if it's always tied back. Is there? Should I cut it for the summer? Argh!

Hi there, that's exactly what i thought before xmas06, what's the point in having long hair if it's just tied up all the time, so i got it cut , realised my curl potential and am regretting it ever since, I could have had such fun with long waves and curls, but thankfully hair grows, so I am just biding my time and then HOPEFULLY I will have great hair next year. But like you I too have noticed my hair doing strange things, like the side bits at the back(just behind my ears) seem to be longer than the rest of my back, but I don't want any more cut off, I'm gonna grow a bit more then get it all leveled up nice and equal.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful by the way, just looking out for a fellow curly in distress!! :P

Well if you let it get long enough you can just pull it over one shoulder. That's what I used to do when my hair was longer.

However, if you're going to pony tail all the time I can't give a pep talk, I'd cut my hair before I did that all the time. What's the fun of longer hair if it's up all the time? It's hot here most of the year so I'd never get to use that extra length for better curls if I wore it up for hot weather.

If it smells good put it in your hair, if it tastes good spit it out!
I would have to wear it up at work anyway, but once I'm out then I'm gonna pull it down, can't wait really.

I've heard it mentioned on here that "dusting" helps with split ends and layers, though I'm not too sure how it's done. It's been mentioned in a few of the threads.

I'm in the in between stage, where my hair is right at shoulder length, and a little below in the back. I wish I could just have my hair falling in front of my shoulders or behind my shoulders, but it's not gonna happen for at least another month or two. I'm just biting my tongue as I keep myself from grabbing the scissors - I know my curl's potential and can't wait to have long hair, so I'm foregoing a trim. Just wanted to let you know that someone else is frustrated with the growing out process!
3B Corkscrew... I'm back on the boards now! Just got The Big Chop on Monday, pics coming soon.
Get a mini trim if you absolutely must. Other than that, don't cut it!! You will regret it later on. think of all the fun you'll have with your long flowing curls Even, your ponytail will nice n lushious! curls, curls, curls! You'll be so happy later on if you just hold on to your length!

It's not about having what you want, it's about Wanting what you have
I haven't cut or trimmed my hair since 97 when I had a relaxer and I had to cut my BSL hair really short. Now,it's BSL again when straightened and past my shoulders when curly. But,if you want to trim or cut your hair then that's fine.

I am growing out too, and dealing with some awkward hair moments. I just keep telling myself to let it grow, since I am 44, this may be the last time I grow it out long. My goal is to grow it to at least bra strap length before I cut it, and I'd like to grow my bangs all the way out. I am sort of waiting for my family to say, "Hey, your hair is getting too long. Don't you think you should cut it?" But, so far everyone is very supportive of the length.

I love the feel of my hair on my back and to be able to actually see my curls, but I'm sure in summer I will get tired of it around my neck. I like to twist mine up with a big claw clip and let the curls spill out the top. Maybe you could try to keep it long for this one summer, and then if you don't like it, cut it for next summer. That's what I am going to do.

I always felt the same way, "WHY have long hair if it's always just in a ponytail?" I would get so board with it at this length (I'm just at BSL). I decided that since I will be 30 in ONE year, I wanted to grow it out - WAY out - but I needed to know there are more to do than just ponytails and frenchbraids. I found this website http://www.longhairloom.com/. They have so many great ideas of things to do with long hair - mostly LONG hair, but it gives me something to look forward to. Anyway, it has helped me alot!

Good luck growing!

The big claw clip is a good idea too. I actually already do that when I'm having a bad hair day, it just never occured to me to do it when my curls look good. This is why I come here... I need someone to give me a bonk on the head and point out the obvious every once in a while.

I will tell her to just trim it and clean up my layers this time. Hopefully I won't go crazy with the scissors one hot day.
