Biotin + empty stomach = no-no

I've taken biotin before with no problems. I started taking it again because I'm trying to grow out my hair (again) - I've been taking it for about a month (1000 mcg daily). I usually take it with my multivitamin, with a meal, though sometimes I'll take it with coffee in the morning and be fine. Yesterday though, I wasn't very hungry at lunch, so I just had a bowl of chicken noodle soup. Took the biotin and multi with that. About an hour later, I went shopping. I was only in Penney's for a few minutes when my head started spinning. I got really hot and could feel my heart racing. I felt really weak, and made my way toward the side wall. I knelt down behind some clothing racks because I felt like I couldn't keep walking. I sat there for a little while thinking should I call for help. If someone would've walked by, I would've asked them to call 911. I really felt like I was going to pass out. Then I began to feel better and was able to get outside and sit on a bench. The fresh air made me feel much better. I was still weak, but bought some pretzels and pop at the dollar store thinking I need more food in my stomach. I sat in the car and ate, felt good enough to drive, and have been fine since then. I figure it must've been taking those pills w/o enough food, though when I've taken vitamins w/o any food, the worst I got was an upset stomach. Has anyone else had similar troubles with biotin or formulas with biotin? I know it wasn't a bad reaction to biotin because I've taken that brand before and had been taking it a month prior to this incident. I took my biotin today but ate plenty with it - no problems. I haven't felt bad leading up to yesterday, so I don't think it's a health issue.

I've never had a problem with biotin or other supplements, though my body seems to be sensitive to new medicines. I've noticed that during several-month stretches that I've taken biotin, I miss more periods than usual. I decided to start out with 1000 mcg this time. If that goes well, I'll move up to a hair, skin, and nails formula that has more biotin in it. I'm not going to let this incident stop me from staying on track with this plan, but I'm going to be sure to eat a lot with it from now on. Just thought I'd pass this along to everyone.
Sometimes supps do that to me too. It won't always hit me but to be safe I always take my supps with a meal. I swear it feels like I have a bad flu or something for a bit.

Weird about the missed periods since it's supposed to do the opposite. Thanks for the warning about that. I'm switching to the hair, nail , skin formula and when I do the biotin will be more than I've taken before so I'll watch for that.

If it smells good put it in your hair, if it tastes good spit it out!
They do that to me too. I can't just take them with food. I have to already have something in my stomach and then eat some more. If I don't do that, I feel sick.
3B with some 3a. Fell off but am now back on the CG bandwagon and looking for my HG products.
Hi CurlyMireya.I make sure that I eat a good portion of food, sometimes it can be half of a sandwich before I take all my supplements.I take them all at one time because I'm on medications,so I take the doses all at lunchtime and with water.I'm taking the 5,000mcgs. of Biotin and have for a year,it hasn't caused any problems.I don't know what's going on with your periods, but I skipped 4 months back in 2005 and they said it was because my prolactin levels were high, and I had milk leaking out of my breast too, excuse my French during sex.The doctor gave me meds. to make my period come back on,but it finally came back on itself. Are you taking any medications? I fainted a couple of weeks ago,but that's because I was on Minocycline, and I stopped it immediately.I hope you find out what's going on with your periods.

Caleilani - I don't take anything other than a small amount of Lexapro (an anti-depressant). I haven't been taking that for very long, but I haven't had any negative side effects from it so far. I take that as soon as I get up, used to take it with only a handful of cereal, and was fine. So I stopped eating with it altogether since I'm not a breakfast eater. I always try to eat at least something with my vitamins because of upset stomachs I've gotten in the past from not eating with them. When I had the dizzy episode, it happened in early afternoon, after lunch, so I assumed the vitamins were the culprit. Though the Lexapro could've played a role in it.

I'm not sure waht Minocycline is (birth control?) but I'm sorry about your fainting. That must've been scary. I've never fainted so don't know how to know when it's coming, but I thought sure I would that one day. I hate medicines because they mess with my system easily it seems like. I'd like to go on birth control eventually and think it would help with the period skipping, though that normally isn't a problem. It's only recently that I've been doing it so I blamed the biotin. I also noticed skipping when I was on biotin before. Very weird. Lexapro could have something to do with it, but that is supposed to help regulate hormones. I'm planning to wean off of that soon, so we'll see. I also don't want to take biotin long-term - I got a haircut in Feb that I regret and I've been so anxious to get my hair longer. Glad you found out why you were skipping - if I ever skip more than 2 months, I'll bring it up to the doctor.
Hi CurlyMireya.I take a bunch of meds.for interstitial cystitis, depression, anxiety,GERD and to fall asleep at night because I have trouble with that. So, that's why I have to take all my supplements at one time, lunchtime.I've heard of Lexapro,my sister-in-law's boyfriend was on it for a while.Yeah,it's good to eat something with the vitamins to keep the stomach calm.Oh trust me you don't want to faint,it's not fun and I'm lucky I didn't break anything.I was trying to take my AM meds, and next thing I knew I was on the floor, but I begin to feel dizzy first. It's not the first time I fainted either.Minocycline was for acne, unfortunately I have it in my 30s,didn't have any in my teens, but it was messing with my system, making me drowsy, etc.I was reading about the prolactin levels online last night, maybe you ought to check into getting a simple blood test for that, they said that missed periods and what I have Galactorrhea(milk coming out of the breasts) have to deal with prolactin levels being elevated.Or it could be your Lexapro too.I don't know? It's just a suggestion.I know how you feel about growing out a haircut.Have you tried MSM,I read it's supposed to be good for hair growth too,I'm currently taking that in my supplements, along with fish oil, flaxseed oil, multivitamin,Biotin, and I've added Inositol last week.I'm on a mission for longer hair HTH

Caleilani, are you noticing faster hair growth and improved condition in your hair yet with your supplements, or have you been taking them long enough to see a difference? Does it make your body hair grow in faster too? That is what I'm afraid of, though I don't think I'm taking enough biotin to make much of a difference. I'm planning on taking a Hair, Skin and Nails vitamin once my multivitamins and biotin run out. It's a Dollar General brand supplement - I guess a generic of the Nature's Bounty one. I like that you only have to take it twice a day versus 3 times with some other brands of hair vitamins. It has 2500 mcg biotin, MSM, silica, and gelatin. I'm anxious to try it since I've heard MSM is very good for hair.
CurlyMireya, yes I'm noticing faster hair growth with my supplements, and yes I have to shave more often every other day,but that's okay with me because I want longer hair.I've been on the Biotin for a whole year now,and the other supplements since Fall.My husband says he sees a difference in thickness too as well as length. My hair is the healthest it's been since I cut it back in 1997 from a relaxer. I know it's the supplements because I don't oil my hair like I used to 3 years ago,and just condition in the shower with cholesterol for 3-5 minutes and put leave-in conditioner and gel and I'm good.Yes,I have a website added to my favorites for MSM,and it says that it helps to grow hair faster and healthier.Tha supplement you're taking sounds good, too. If you're interested Puritan Pride sells Super Biotin 5,000mcgs.for a good price, and I think they're still having the buy 2 get 3 free deal,I always take advantage of their freebies.Yeah,I hear you on only having to take supplements as less as possible, that's why I just combine mine all at one time due to me taking meds. in the AM and PM.This Inositol is supposed tobe good for hair growth too,I'm taking 1300mgs. of that,I just started it though last week.

I've had a problem like that before. If I take them on an empty stomach or right after I eat I get extremely sick to my stomach.

I have to eat about 15-20 minutes (at least) ahead of time, even if it is just a granola bar!
2c or 3a Cut most of my hair off in July '12 and am working on regrowing it.
I started taking the Skin, Hair, and Nails supplements I got at GNC...and they made me sick. I always took them with food but tried variations. Maybe their is something in it (one or more of the vitamins) that are just not agreeing with my insides... So since I bought two bottles at once, I'm going to try and take the unopened bottle back. I really was trying with these things, but they're just not for me, probably since I already have some stomach issues.

I hope they work out well for the rest of you all.
Mostly 4a..crazy hair

Currently using: 100% Aloe Vera Gel , VO5 Conditioners for Co-Washes, Jojoba and Africa's Best Oils, GV Biolage Conditioning Balm , Cream of Nature Detangling Shampoo, ACV rinses, Herbal Tea Rinses (rarely), Alba Botanica Leave-in

Goal: healthy hair and longer hair

I started taking these yesterday and I have the worst headache today. I never get headaches. I just feel ick and wierd. I wonder it it's related to these vitamins?!

Anybody else experience this?

I just bought some Biotin today. I bought the 500mcg capsules and on the package it says to take 3 capsules during the day (a total of 1,500 mcg) but you guys are talking about 5,000mcg a day.

What do i do??

I swear it messes with my menstrual cycle, even if it is not taken alone but within a hair supplement (the supplement I was taking contains biotin with other nutrients for the hair).
I found that ANY supplement can do that to me if I haven't eaten - I had it happen about 2 months ago at a knitting circle I go to - And I had taken my supplements with only coffee that day because I was rushed....never again!

But I will start up again with my Hair supplements (I do GNC brand) I had stopped for awhile - rushing around not eating correctly etc and not wanting to feel like that again - but since you are noticing a difference I will make it a point to get something to eat first

Did it work for you CurlyMireya? Did you at some point notice a positive effect and how long did it take to show?

Yomini, I noticed a difference with my nails within the first couple of weeks, though I didn't take biotin long enough to notice much of a difference with my hair. I've heard that it can take a few months to notice any change in hair growth, and I stopped taking it after about 3 mons. each time. My nails were very strong and fast-growing, though.
