Going curly and looking completely different

I'm still transitioning, but I was wondering how you guys felt about going natural and if you felt like your whole appearance somehow changed. I now look in the mirror now and feel like I look so different now. Just wondering your thoughts.

i know what you mean about looking different. when i was relaxing, my hair was fairly long and always looked fabulous. it really made me feel feminine and pretty. now, i have to wear it in a bun or ponytail ALL the time and when its wet the straight ends make it look like crap! i dont feel very good about my appearance now, but i know the end result is completely worth it. i just wish my hair would grow faster than it is currently growing...

Wow I'm going thru the same thing! I always have my hair in a ponytail, a style I only reserved for bad hair days. Now i feel like I've been having a bad hair day for 4 months LOL I hate looking at my forehead so this is very uneasy for me. I feel like the ponytail makes me look unprofessional and messy. Just my opinion about myself *crying* :(

aww, im sorry its making you feel this badly. i think buns are more professional looking than ponytails (even tho i wear them at work alot). what you could try tho is go to h & m or some other store and get some of those hair bands or clips with silk flowers attached to them and wear those over your bun or ponytail. it dresses things up a bit and is an option for something different. big earrings and makeup have also helped exponentially! you will get through it. one thing that helped me was finding photos of girls with natural hair in the same type (or close) as me, then printing and taping these up in a place where i will see them alot. it was good for inspiration in the early months.

Yes and I still deal with it and I've been modified CG for over 2 years now . I still think I look better with straight hair and although I've tried to do without bangs, I've gone back to them.

My husband thinks I'm nuts when I stand there and look in the mirror and say how the way my hair is doing today makes my face look different. He doesn't see it. But I do .. so it's back to the bangs .

In a similar vein, does anyone think they look different in different places? I look one way with my restroom mirror. Thirteen minutes to work and when I get to my restroom there, I look different that mirror. Or to a mall restroom. Or even my sun visor mirror! I look different wherever I go !!

I think it is the lighting. It's similar to how your lipstick looks brownish red in the bathroom but when you look in your car mirror, the same lipstick is orange red. :D

I look similar with both curly and straight hair, but I do know what you're talking about. I hated my short hair at first. I still have short hair (think Felicity or Halle Berry short). I did look different at first because my hair looked and felt like straw. The healthier it becomes, the more my face looks like me again. It's hard at first, especially when you're used to having straight hair, but if your hair looks its best, then you'll look your best.

I was never afraid to go natural as long as it was tamed. It's natural, so it's not a big thing. =] It's more of how other people react sometimes

I defintely feel like my natural hair makes me look different. I don't feel like I look as sophisticated as I used to. I almost look like a teenager. I guess it's because subconsciously I associate my natural hair with being a little girl....since that is the last time I actually had natural hair!

I hated the way I looked in straight hair, haven't had it straight since maybe mid 1980's. But I tex-relaxed to a 3c all during that time. My concern in going all -natural was losing all the texture and just dealing with frizz every day (which is all I saw of my roots). The reality turned out to be not that much different from when I tex-relaxed. My texture is actually more defined and a bit tighter, but that's it. The frizziness I feared was caused by dryness from the relaxer chemicals and from water-blocking non-water soluble hair products.
