What's the most awkward length of hair while growing out?

I've been growing my hair since my big chop in Sept '06 with only 2 trims to get rid of the mullet-look. I think it's now at its most awkward stage - the front is between nose and chin and the back is lower collar-length. The front and sides of my hair are more curly than the back and shrink up considerably more when dry - which doesn't help the look at all! I can hardly wait 'til the front is long enough to pull back in a pony tail and/or the humidity returns enough to put some oomph back into my fine hair. This stage is no fun.

I think between sl and bsl. I've never had it shorter than shoulder length, so I don't know.

When you say lower collar length, do you mean just past the shoulders? Cause this is where I'm at right now once dry and it's driving my crazy! I am so fighting the urge to just cut it. The shrinkage I'm getting is insane. When it's wet it's literally 3 inches shy of my bra strap but once it's dry, it ends up right at that awkward right below the shoulders length. I've been wearing it half up/half down or pulled back a lot lately. I can't even do a headband because the side layers poof out.

Seems to me that curly hair should grow faster than straight hair just to make up for that shrinkage factor!

For me the most awkward is the stage between too long to stay neat but still too short to put in a ponytail.

I'm thrilled that mine is getting longer so quickly, but it's still about an inch above shoulder length (only when dry, of course). I can't quite get it into a good ponytail and it's tickling the bottom of my neck!
oh, i think the most awkward stage is where i am right now: longest layers at almost chin length and shortest at the top of my ear. oh, and bangs that got cut waaaaaay too short.

there isn't much you can do with it, and with a headband, if you're not careful, you get stupid little poofs on the sides.

if i'm not careful, when i straighten it i look like a mushroom.
I am at the "awkward stage" you guys are describing (just past shoulder, lots of layers) but I actually like it! It's just gotten long enough so that my cowlicks are tamed by their own weight.

for me the most awkward was growing out a pixie cut and each piece of hair was about 4" long. I had cowlicks everywhere and there was nothing I could do because it was too short to put up.

That's why I got it cut again! Actually there were lots of reasons - the main one being that I REALLY don't like to fuss with my hair. Now it's a pixie - shorter even than in my photos. The front/top curls and waves up nicely with no fuss and no frizz and the back and sides lay easily. I don't even need gel or curl cream - it's just CO-wash or CG-friendly poo and condish and away I go!!

Don't forget to be awesome!
I have straight hairs sticking out from the back of my neck and on the lower end on both sides of my head (I'm not that articulate- I don't know how else to explain it!). It's really annoying and is a slap in the face to all the effort I put into my hair. I'm scared of going to school in a month and looking like this!

I'm just gonna wait it out though. I'm hoping it'll be worth it. The longer my hair gets, the more it curls. So hopefully all that straight fluff will a) curl or b) be covered by the more pretty hairs on my head.

Yeah, the middle stages whilst growing out one's hair totally suck..
Everything is awkward right now for me. It is long enough now to get some of it into a ponytail (with some clipping). BUT the top is long enough to look big when my hair is up and too short to get caught up in the scrunchie.

HORRID as it is, I have to hang in there. It is growing, it is just very curly and when you have corkscrew curls you have shrinkage, major shrinkage!

My stylist says it doesn't seem to grow because it is growing "around in a spiral" instead of just down. Whatever! Grow hair grow

There are two for me, when the length hits the top of the neck and when it is right below shoulder length.

The most awkward lenght is when you've just started growing out your hair = The first three months (those were the hardest ones for me).

I'm glad this is the 5th month...

Uggggh. The most awkward length to go through is the length I'm at RIGHT NOW. not even reaching chin length in the front, growing out short bangs, and mullet in the back. Yucky. I just want to fast-forward a few months until I'm at atleast shoulder length.
Any length where I cannot put it up in at least a reasonable pony tail. And I feel even better when I can do an up-do.
