Oh this thread is great... I needed a smile today!

I get a lot of backhanded compliments. The number one thing I hear is, when my hair is straight for some reason (stylist flat-ironed it to cut it, which I don't let them do now, or I slept on a wet ponytail, etc.): "Your hair looks great today!"

Thanks. As opposed to every other day when it looks... not great?

My boyfriend's dad loves to make comments about how I don't brush my hair. I think he's just uncomfortable and trying to be cute. I'm Jewish, his family is Catholic, so... *shrug*

I also get asked about my curling iron "technique" a lot, like whether I do them all the same way or alternate directions, etc. Sorry to let you down folks - no iron needed.

Several times in college I got asked "What ARE you?" I'm Welsh and a bit of Italian with the Jewish curls, but I speak Punjabi and used to do bellydance, and I think people were just SUPER confused. I understand the reason for asking, but what a way to say it!

Like so many others here, I do get accosted at the mall by the flatiron kiosk girls. I just smile and say "I NEVER straighten my hair!" I live in California, where the straighten your hair/curl it again move is very trendy. Weird!
I sort of blog

"I love your wig, it looks so real"

"Your pretty hair doesn't match your skin"

There are many more but I've learned to tune it out to the point I forget after a few minutes.

i've gotten:

"is that a hat?"

"is that your real hair?"

"is that a wig?"

"do you have extensions?"

"how much time did you spend curling your hair today?"
This is related more to my recent cut than to my curls, but since cutting off 12 inches:

"Oh my gosh you cut your hair?!? Are you... *furtive glances around* sick, you know?" As if someone needs to be seriously ill to change their hairstyle...

"You used to have such pretty long hair!" Well, now I have pretty short hair, lady!

I told one lady that I cut it because a solid pound of hair pulling at my scalp everyday was giving me headaches, and her response was to tell me that she had never heard of such a thing, and if I had thought to get a second medical opinion.

Yikes.

Someone told me today that I had "the pretty curls." I'm always happy to get a hair compliment, but it felt a little back handed to other curl types.

It always makes me uncomfortable when people say "you have that good type of hair." What am I supposed to say to that?

I helped a young woman at work yesterday. She asked me if my curls were natural (I am wearing a twist out). I told her yes I am natural. Being white with a biracial child, I think she was clueless on how to do her hair and replied I wish my daughter's hair would curl up like that, but it always ends up in a big fro. I tried to tell her that the little girls hair would probably curl for her but needed a little manipulation. As I tried to finish my explanation, I could see her zoning out on me and looking at me like I'm speaking a foreign language. So I simply told her to watch YouTube videos for help. She looked at me like, yeah ok. As she walked away, I thought sweet Jesus, what does this child's hair look like?!!!!! I wanted to follow her home with some products

"Is it real?" (Really!?)

"Is it heavy?"

"Can I touch it?" (Not really a dumb question but the answer is kind off obvious to me: NO)

"How did you get your hair like that?" (Ehm like, I was born?)
"your hair must be so comfy to sleep on! Do you even need a pillow?"

I wouldn't call this one dumb, but...
I have ridiculously tiny corkscrew coils when I do a WnG. That is without any form of manipulation other than finger combing. Anyway, I was asked by someone " How did you curl your hair like that?"
Now if I did that my self, I'd've had to have used a coffee straw and I don't have that time available. I was, however, polite and said no, it does that on its own... The woman did not believe me people. She gave me this "I think you are withholding info" stare. 😳

I thought it was funny, and was telling a friend about it when a co-worker broke into the conversation, and said, "Your hair isn't naturally curly, you just want to think it is!"

She would repeat that every time I said anything related to my hair. Seriously? After seeing me with curly hair for 21 years, never once with straight hair, she thought my hair wasn't naturally curly. That would be like my thinking she had naturally curly hair because her hair was always stick straight, except for the one day she had curled it, and the curl fell out in the first hour at work.

Amazed at your co-worker's audacity. Amazed but not surprised. Sometimes people don't know how to handle their envy.

Reminds me of when someone cute enters a room and some petty, envious person remarks, "I'm sure she looks plain without makeup".

And I will just say it: there are scads of people who are downright flipping envious of curly hair, or certain types of curly hair anyway, despite negative messages about curly hair in the media. Some people are honest enough to openly say they are envious while some resort to being nasty.

Envious of certain types of curly hair? What does this mean exactly?

I've seen envy of anything from a huge 4c cloud of healthy and robust curls all the way to silky and flowing 2a waves.

I'm confused by your comment...
