truth about indian women with curly hair.

there aren't that many Indian girls with curly hair. the few of them who do have curly hair..well ud probably never see their curls because they comb they're hair until its a huge poof and then put a whole bottle of coconut oil in it and then braid it. (i kno this because my mom used to do this to me everyday wen i was little and i rmr crying so hard cuz i had alot of knots n shed pull the brush so hard through them)most indian gurls have straight hair, im Indian and im the only one i kno with curly hair except for my dad but he doesn't like it and he combed it so much that its basically straight now. i think curly hair is so much more interesting than straight hair cuz its different for everyone. i wish id see more indian girls with curly hair..i dunno if this really belongs in "hall of shame" but i jus felt like sharing...

Hi!

I'm indian too & I know what you're talking about!!
My hair wasnt curly until I was 12-13, so I dont have any curly childhoodmemories.
Most indians have straight hair, its really beautiful, but some have curly hair. A mix of 2b/3a, what are you?
My mom brushes her hair several times a day, its just a frizzy mess :(

I dont think Indians like curly hair, I have gotten some comments on that I "should get my hair done".
The board will help you to love your curls, I am sure they are beautiful!

Curly hair is absolutely beautiful, My mom and both my sisters all have wavy/curly hair and all three of them straighten their hair everyday. I wish I could convince them to embrace their curls, but they just say their hair isn't like mine, but it can be with the right care. Every Indian woman I have ever seen have gorgeous hair, it always looks so healthy and pretty. I heard that Medimex is good for your hair ( coconut oil is great for curls too), was wondering if either of you have used it, or any other hair oils that you could recommend?

esmeralda 01-23-2007 01:23 PM

I have never heard of Medimex...
but I have tried coconutoil. Many curlies like it, but I get zits when I use it :(
In India oily hair is not a bad thing, so people use lots of hairoils & dont care about the grease.

Theres an oil from Rene Furterer, its great & has a "lemony smoky" herbal scent. It's CG too!
I massage my scalp with this once a week. You can view it here:

44 USD!! I got mine in Paris for around half of that!!

My intern is Indian and she has curly or wavy hair (so she tells me). She doesn't like it, so she flat irons her hair daily. It looks great flatironed, but I told her that if she decided to go curly, following CG would be best for her hair.

(Though I'm not Indian, many people mistakenly think I am.) I do agree that there a lot of Indian women with beautiful, straight hair. Even so, I have seen many Indian women with wavy/curly hair. Generally their hair is thick and naturally shiny. When it is frizzy, it usually seems that way because of ignorance -- using a brush or a bad haircut. I also do agree that many Indian women probably have some type of natural wave (most people do) that they get rid of through brushing or flat-ironing.

You should be proud of your hair! There are a lot of Indian/Pakistani/etc. women in my area who have curly hair and don't straighten it, just so you know. If you're having trouble styling it, you should probably use a leave-in oil or conditioner, as well as some gel.

I worked briefly with an Indian woman who had straight hair. Her husband had curly hair and their daughter had inherited it, much to this womans dismay. She told me that she had always straightened her daughters hair as she hated it so much. Not sure how old the daughter was or what she thought of her hair, she just wasn't allowed to have it curly. I wondered what it did for this poor girls self-confidence, to constantly have her mother telling her she hated her hair.
I think she was just a rude woman, she's the only person who's ever insulted me about my hair - walked in on a conversation I was having with another colleague about my hair one morning, looked at me and said "yes, it's awful isn't it, I hate curly hair". I was so gobsmacked I couldn't respond and my other colleague told her off. She hadn't a clue what she'd said wrong! This was only the second time I'd met this woman too, it's not as if she knew me well and knew of my obsession with my hair.

Bengalis love curly hair. It reminds them of the goddess Durga ! My mom is indian and I have inherited her hair (and my grandmom's). I used to hate my curly hair mainly because in school I used to get teased a lot and I envied the nice long straight jet black hair that so many indians have. I was always brushing my hair so the curls would disappear and my mom used to complain about me doing that. She would talk about curly hair like it was a Godly thing with a life of its own ! Of well, now I do agree with her ;-)

I get what your saying, but not all of them do that. I have curly hair, and I'm Indian.

msjanani 07-25-2007 12:42 AM

I'm another curly-haired Indian!

Many Indian women just don't like their curly hair because they're trying to strive for the unattainable bollywood look: fair skinned, fair eyed, and stick-straight, long hair.

It's so self-hating it's sick.

medhavi 11-12-2007 12:49 PM

yet another curly haired indian gal! my hair didn't curl up until i was about 12/13 too, so all through high school, i had no idea what to do with it, had a lot of bad hair days, let me tell you. my grandpa had curly hair, and my aunt and mom both have curly hair. my mom straightens hers with big rollers, and i remember my aunt wearing her tight curls very curly, but i guess she now straightens it too.

now i'm in my 20's and have learned to love my curls! although i still have that dilemma of trying to figure out a new hairstyle.

My assistant is Indian, and she has short, super-curly hair. She cut it when she was living in Dubai.

I'm new here...

Hi, I'm new here, and I felt I needed to get a profile because this post made me react so strongly.

I'm wondering what part of India you are from, willytheturtle, because in the southern states, nearly everyone has waves and curls! I've noticed that a lot of north Indians have stick straight hair, but again, there are numerous exceptions on both sides. The reason that you don't often see girls walking around with curls in India, at least in the southern states, is because it's a conservative country. The conservative feminine beauty has logn hair, and nearly everyone wears it in a plait (braid). As for the brushing thing, most American-born Indians brush their hair (my mother always brushed mine) but in India, my cousins always use a comb. They dry comb it though, as most of them believe that touching wet hair causes massive breakage.

People in India definitely appreciate curls. My father's family has numerous curlyheads in it; he said his sister had such curly hair, she'd break all the "unbreakable" combs--everyone admired the pattern of the curl. He said it was beautiful, and that he wished he had tighter curls like his brothers and sisters.

laynesavedtheday 04-14-2008 06:27 PM

i have a friend with the same type of hair as you, who does the exact same thing. it is SOOO long (like to her butt) but its in braids EVERY SINGLE DAY it could be sooo pretty and unique =[

Amda 05-09-2008 11:42 PM

Well, I'm Sri-Lankan (so not quite Indian, but hey, we're only about half a centimeter away on a map...) and all of the other Sri-Lankans/Indians I know have curly or wavy hair! Maybe I'm just lucky to be surrounded by so many curlies, but I can only think of two relatives of mine with naturally straight hair.

curlylaura 05-10-2008 04:38 AM

A girl I went to school with is Sri-Lankan and her hair was at least 3C.

fl 05-10-2008 09:43 AM

i am indian! half my family has curly hair, and they all do the oil and braid thing. though i don't know about south indians having mostly curly hair - i know south indians and they are always complaining that they have hard time getting their hair to keep a curl for more than a few hours.
