Nappy hair

Today I was back at my parents' house for mother's day. My dad used to part my hair and do my hair as a child. I asked him to part my hair. He did but said, "you hair is tight." several times. I wasn't sure what he meant so I asked. Then he said its nappy.i joked about it, but it did make me feel bad ! He is a man who loves straight hair. But he liked my hairstyle in the end .

How were you able to shake off mean comments ?

I've been talked about and made fun of so much about other parts of my appearance that when I went natural and a complete stranger yelled on the bus that I had nappy hair, I didn't care. Black folk hair is naturally nappy.......who doesn't know that? Little black girls have been tricked into thinking their natural hair can't be beautiful for so long, when a comment is made about it hurts us. We both know Dad wasn't trying to be mean. Maybe he doesn't understand why you want your natural curls...... maybe he likes straight hair bcuz he's accustomed to it.

I hate the term nappy. It brings back all the hurtful comments about my hair from child hood. I think the word carries the connotation that our curls are less than
