Default compliment or shame?

After being addicted to my straightening iron I've finally embraced my natural hair texture--still in the recover phase but I do have nice waves with a few loose corkscrews...today I had my first hair touching and comment:

A lady at church came up and started touching my hair and said oh your hair looks just like my daughters--she wouldn't let me brush it last night or this morning--its such a mess...then proceeded to tell me how pretty my wavy curly hair is....a wild mess but pretty--that makes sense, lol

I'm not really offended since reading on here about other's experiences I was half expecting to have something said at some point...though I'm wondering if I should take this as a compliment since its the first time, lol Finally have become apart of the curly community all the way

Yea--my hair was still wet from showering so I have a little frizz where she touched but overall have very little frizz.

Welcome to the curly community, Becca. Accepting and embracing it is half the battle. As a guy, it took me a lot longer.

Id take it as a compliment..I never even get a comment but I tend to always wear my hair up but I still haven't given up on the flat iron, its a comfort zone at school atleast.

One of my dad's friends didn't recognize me the other day, I had my hair up in a messy bun. The other time he'd met me I had my curls down. He asked my dad whether I was the third daughter (there's only 2 actually lol). When my dad told him I was the same curly girl, he was all "Oh, didn't recognize you without the curls"....I'm not sure whether that means my curls are nice or what, but the whole thing made me laugh XD
I think you hear what you want to hear in the end, whether for better or for worse =P
