In my school curly hair is not such a bad thing. It's only the 4a and 4b type hair that everyone likes to make fun of.

I grew up with waist long, straight shiny blonde hair. As soon as I hit fifth grade though- forget about it. It curled practically overnight. Everybody seemed to love my hair... in fact, I was the one calling it an afro, and on bad days, The Beast. Now I've learned to love it, and any negative comments I get I just brush off. I really really do hate it when people tell me that my straightened hair looks better than my curls, though.
Like many of you, I have a TON! But the absolute worst I can remember was back when I was in 7th grade. I had grown out my hair a bit past my shoulders, but didn't take care of it because I didn't know how. Nobody knew!

So I'd go to school with my hair long and poofy, secured with a giant plastic headband, still looked just... ack. I was sitting in class and the immature kid that sat behind me during 2nd period math was playing around with a stapler. I thought nothing of it, ignoring him, trying to focus on the teacher.

Later that night as I took my shower before I went to bed, I suddenly realized why more people were laughing at me than usual. THERE WERE STAPLES STUCK IN MY HAIR. I must have pulled 30 or 40 staples out of my hair. The WHOLE TIME he was sitting there behind me launching the little metal buggers into my hair! I had walked around like that ALL DAY and ALL EVENING -- no one even cared enough to tell me. I cried myself to sleep that night and wouldn't really talk to anyone at school for like a week. Horrible experience.

He and his little buddies were behind me laughing, and I didn't figure out what they were doing until someone next to me said he was shooting staples into my hair. I kept telling him to stop, and they all kept laughing, and I heard him say, "It looks like a christmas tree!" I felt so humiliated and helpless that I just sat there for the rest of the class crying silently. It was horrible...

Before I discovered how to take care of my hair it would be so frizzy and boys would always be like I can't see over your hair and blah blah blah in a really mean way D:

and my mom when I first started going curly was really resistant to it and she said she hated it and it was awful but she's really come around

But whenever I straighten my hair people always tell me how much better I look (I mean I get told my curly hair is pretty but when it's straight i get told that I AM PRETTY)

So yea apparently my curly hair is pretty but I'm pretty with straight hair-_-

though in a huge turn around my mom now thinks I look better with curly hair

I just wear it curly cause it suits my personality and straightening it takes to much time
Pre-CG I would wear mine in a ponytail all the time as to avoid rude comments, but I still would get some. Like a girl said to me in the locker room once. "hah! You're hair looks like a poodle" I'm like uhh o_O and I seriously wanted to slap her but played along I guess.

Otherwise some of my friends just LOOOVE to remind me how "poofy, big and funny" my hair looks. They say it endearingly and like they're just poking fun but it really still hurts.

And yea I get the thing too where when my hair was straightened I got much more attention from guys and compliments from girls like "OMG I LOVE it straight! So pretty!" And that really just makes me want to never straighten it again. I mean, I like the compliments but I hate that I only get them when I'm not being myself, you know? In fact I think I look a little weird with straight hair. I always feel like my eyes look too big lol.

My little sister calls me horse hair.

If someone feels like insulting me the first thing they go for is the hair.

Also, people always say
"Please please please let me straighten your hair."

This girl has extremely curly hair and during a chorus trip she was messing with my less curly hair. She and her mother had just trash talked some girls for telling her she had "Black girl hair" (which was inappropriate on the two girls' part) and her mother turns to her and said
"Don't mess with her (my) hair. You'll turn it into a bigger fro then it already is."

Lastly my old friends step mom gave me de frizz and forced me to let her wash my hair with her $60 dollar shampoo and conditioner claiming she was taming "the fro."

I don't even have a "fro". Just curly and most of the time frizzy hair.

well lets see this girl who I wont say who is very close to me -_- is always giving me these looks like shes trying not to be rude and saying
oh the weather took a toll on your hair
or
your hair is you know kinda frizzy with this face like im like -_- so what.

And it bothers me how me going to h.s. curly hair is like pretty in some eyes but in the ones you care about their opinion they think its horrible. then what kills me is she has nice easy to manage wavy hair which is pretty and kinda straight and she tries to give me advice on how to deal with it. No offence your trying to help but dont by saying "maybe you should blow dry it" I dont want to so leave me alone.

also when i told my other friend i had 3b hair she said you sure you dont have 4b hair because you have them naps. im like um get out of here. that was so rude -_-
I was wondering if anyone had people make rude comments about their curly hair that really stayed with them? We can commisserate together! SOrry if this has been done.

I'm 26 now but these comments have stuck with me and given me a really negative image of my hair:

1 Walking down the school bus aisle I overheard one guy say "you know whose hot (referring to me)," guy 2 says "Eww with that huge mass of hair," "guy 1 says "WHo cares just put a bag over her head she has huge..."

2 In JH 1 of my best friends was running her hands through my hair. I asked her to stop saying it messed up my curls and I was having a bad hair day. SHe said "You *ARE* a bad hair day" In HS this same girl said, after I came to school with a temp straight style "YOu should keep it that way...."

3 In JH this boy said my hair felt like "ruberized sheep wool." :x

4 In preshool this girl put mud in my hair. And made some crappy comment that escapes me now.

5 When I was 10 I went shopping w/my grandma who has fine silky hair. WHenever a sales lady waited on us srandma would say "Look what the wind does to our hair"--desperately trying to smooth down my locks. Resistance is futile grandma

6 In hs my boyfriend saw a childhood picture of me. He said "Oh my God yo had a FRO". THere's nothing wrong with fros, but It wasn't anywhere close to a fro. Ignorance, ignorance.

7 In 7th grade a stylist chopped off 3/4 of my long hair when I'd asked for a trim. When I walked in a classroom to deliver a letter, everyone simultaneuosly gasped--DAAAAAAMMMMMN her hair is so frizzy. DAAAAMMMMN.

8 In the locker room in JH the girls would always tell me to get a relaxer.....unsolicited advice.

ANyway, I feel better now. SOrry for the vent. ANy similar experiences?

Finally in college people accepted my curly haired self for who I was! But to this day I have had a coworker say that my hair needed to be fixed and was too big and frizzy.
Just this past weekend a male friend of my mother's asked me why I never do anything to my hair...meaning, I guess, how come I never straighten it, since I can't think of what else he thinks I'm supposed to be doing to it.

Well, needless to say, my response is completely inappropriate for this site (they don't call me "Surly" curly for nothing!), but the "clean" version is to ask him what made him think I cared about his opinion, and to suggest that he take a look in the mirror himself sometimes before criticizing anyone else!
Generally, I dont really get many people with negative remarks. Now and again I will get the odd sly comment that really gets to me, as I am quite sensitive.

The one I can remember the most is when i was walking home one day, a group of school kids walked past me and one girl shouted 'Hi frizzy, want some frizz ease?' This was on a particularly bad hair day, i had put my hair back in a pony because i had run out of hair cream. It really upset me
Fortunately, no one has ever made any negative comments about my hair (at least not to my face, anyway). I get an occasional compliment, but no insults. I doubt that it will stay that way, though...I'm sure someone is bound to make a bad comment about my hair whether it's to my face or behind my back. Probably some have already.

I think it's horrible what some people have said about you guys' hair! I can't believe it! And you all have such beautiful hair, too...

This one is totally indirect and not really aimed at me technically. Where I used to work there was a girl who really liked my hair and asked me how I did it. She was Middle Eastern and had probably a 3a/b hair type that she straightened every day.

I told her how I did mine and the next day she shows up to work beaming with her hair looking gorgeous and curly, and the guys were like, "What the hell did you do to your hair?!" She didn't care though, and kept the style sort of off and on.

However, it made ME feel terrible as a 3c. If they hated her hair- they must REALLY hate mine. I wasn't that bothered by it because I LOVE my curls, but I'm sure you guys get what I'm saying.

My Fotki
the worst comment i've ever had was at the beginning of my junior year in hs and i was at the movies w/ some friends. i thought that i was having a really good curly hair day. i went to the bathroom and when i came back, one of my friends wondered where i went. one of my guy friends said "obviously she had some fun with the guy who walked out 2 seconds after she did. her hair is that kind of "outta bed sex hair" that you always see in movies, all messy and frizzy and stuff. ya know, like the hooker in the movie pretty woman? or when the woman wakes up after she just slept with a guy." so not only did one of my friends call me a slut but he also insulted my hair. i then proceded to slap him across the face, and he isnt as much of a friend anymore

I walk into the mess hall at a camp I was attending, having just conditioned my hair in the sink. One of the adults looks at it and says, "I have a brush in my bag if you want to fix that." :sigh:

I told a friend I was going natural, after relaxing my hair for 10 years, and showed her some pictures of women with my hair type (4a) and she said "oh i'm so sorry". She has that "good hair" and has been told so her entire life. She probably thought she was being a good friend by telling me that lol

I told another friend I was going natural and she said "oh i'm natural too, but i trained my hair to be straight with my flat iron, i'll show you how i did it" Clearly she missed the point of being natural.

A lot of things people say are offensive, but they don't realize it is. Even in this thread, people saying that bullies called their hair a "fro", and being devastated by it Having an afro or "fro like hair" isn't a curse. Being nappy isn't a curse. I think the biggest curse is having type 1 hair with absolutely no character, body, or personality.

There's an ad on this site, it's either for KCCC or jessicurl, and it shows a woman with 4a-4b hair in an afro (probably a wash n go). She's the "before" version. The "after" version is her fro slicked and clumped with tons of product to make it look like a looser curl (more 3c-ish). Those kind of things I give the side eye.
Why is my hair type always the shown as being the WORST?
Why is my hair type used as a derogatory term to other curlies?!?! I mean damn. Why can't me and my kinks and coils live in peace!!! I'm sooo ready to go back to school this semester so that I can hear the negative comments about my hair. I have some good comebacks in store I deal with a lot of black women who have chemically relaxed hair, so this should be fun.

I am a 3b and i adore more kinky textured hair. I used to tease my hair to get an afro but my hair would just fall flat, sadly. I teased it up for my 7th grade pictures. My mom refused to buy that year book, lol. I thought it looked awesome though. I also have straighted my hair and thought it looked beautiful as well. I also adore my natural ringlets. ^.^

More importantly I love all hair types. From 1a-4b and all those inbetween! Your comment is just as negative and rude as the people you are accusing. As long as hair is healthy and well groomed it is beautiful... at least in my eyes. :]

Ok, maybe saying it's a curse is extreme, but I can't even come here and vent??? I thought that surely other curlies would understandThats great that you like kinky hair and straight hair. Good for you! But I have my opinions too. Everybody else in the world is entitled to theirs. I prefer any hair past type 1. Thats my preference. Sorry, can't change that. If it's rude then oh well, just because everyone else praises straight hair doesn't mean that I have to.
