hurtful comments people've made about your hair

Actually yes, throughout my life
I have 4 a 4b textured hair

Age 6, grade 1 my hair was really long, reached armpit length in 2 braids, thats the way my mom did my hair a lot when I was little. One day i requested to have my hair let out in 2 pigtails and wore my hair to school in 2 pigtails.
That day this boy in my class made a comment about me looking like a crazy girl or something. That made me not wear my hair out again until it was relaxed when I got older

Recently last year i just finished transitioning to natural hair. for an project in school, i had to bring in a picture of myself, i used the first, most recent picture i could find and brought it (photo taken with relaxed hair), this girl looks at it and says i looked way better in the picture.

then later this year when grad pictures are being taken, some kids are talking about getting their pictures taken, and the photographer and all that stuff, 1 girl mentions that she wore that graduation cap, you know the square one, but other people say that the photographer didn't show it to them, I mentioned that I thought it would be sort of fun to wear one of those hats in the photo. The girl responds, why your hair is already weird looking enough.
The only negative comments that I have heard myself are that I look better with my hair straight, from a few imbeciles who can't appreciate curly hair. If I wanted my hair straight or even liked it that way, I'd do something about it.. But I don't and I won't!
just ignore the rude comments, its not worth turning your smile upside down over

hello my dear friends there is very interesting topic about our hairstyle.

affairs
I'm sure there's been tons of comments, but I've forgotten them over the years. But I was talking with one of my friends and he told me his ex referred to me as "Poodle-head". Real mature. We're 21, time to grow up.
I remember back in elementary school I had the hugest kid crush on this guy in my class. We were only about 6 years old. Anyway, he told me didnt like me because my hair was "frizzy".I was really hurt. He then proceeded to say that he another girl in the class and of course she had straight frizz free hair. Stupid boys..... :P
When I was growing up, there was an old saying "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me." But hurtful words DO harm people's feelings and leave some of them with a complex. As a child, if I could have shaved my hair off and started all over again, I would have (thank God I didn't!!) But ignorance isn't just displayed by kids who don't know better, there are a lot of adults who are insensitive to the feelings of others. I'm so glad that after spending most of my childhood (and early adult years) not liking my hair, I can finally say out loud I LOVE MY CURLS!! Thanks naturallycurly.com for helping me to embrace them.

Shrinkage happens.
I didn't go natural until 25 and my mom relaxed my hair when I was only 3 years old. I just really get stares on the street. But the worse comes from my own family my grandmother in particular. She insists on making fun of my hair during family gatherings saying things like "let me relax your hair" I told her "the devil is a lye" lol

once in high school i over heard these girls commenting on my hair. they said i was pretty but could be beautiful and sexy if i had straight hair! HUH?
Curly hair is unique, and when you look at your aunt and anyone else with unnaturally straight hair, and see their thin, sad looking, dry as straw, chemical laden, and destroyed relaxed or flat ironed hair which is only that way because of misconceptions by society, scoff and toss your curls over you shoulder.
Hair Type: I was thinking thick, fine 3A, but honestly I have no clue! I do know I have a super flat top, and frizz on the sides.

honestly, i cant remember ever getting rude comments on my hair. everyone just commented on how long and "curly" it was. (hip-length and 3a/b) but about 2 years ago, in 7th grade i think, a girl who sat behind me in homeroom came to school with "curled" hair.. but really it was just a big frizzy crunchy mess.. and one of the guys commented on how weird her hair looked, and askde what she tried to do to it, and she saiid "its curled, like hers(referring to me) but just not as bad. " we didnt get along at all so i jst brushed it off. but thats the only rude comment i ever got.. att least that i remember.
Amen to all of the above. I think we should get some sort of t-shirts made ... "I'll never go straight." (of course, that will be misconstrued)

Hmmn...we need to think of the ultimate curly hair statement....something that will stop them from making such ridiculous comments.

What I really don't understand, though, is how people have the audacity to tell other people how to wear their hair. Don't they even realize how incredibly rude it is?

I have never once told anyone how to wear their hair, how to eat, how to do anything....unless they asked for my advice first.

When my boyfriend and I first started dating I wore my hair straight once on a date. A few months later he commented and said..."I really miss your straight hair...it looks so great like that" so...I started straightening it all the time. Forward three years, and it was getting so fried looking to me....so I finally started getting mad about it and said...that's it! I can't do this anymore, look what you've done to my hair! (hahaa, had to throw a little guilt trip in there) Started wearing it natural again but felt REALLY self concious about it at first. I just knew in his head he was thinking I look hideous or something...(although he never said that) And now he says...he's really starting to love it curly.
But those thoughts still creep up sometimes.
Amazing what one word from another person can do to harm a curly psyche.

1. Mom please perm your hair or don't come to my school
2. Sorry babes im not being as supportive as u like but thats just not you
3.U had beautiful full hair now I don't even see any hair
4.I understand if u got bad hair, bald spot, hair want grow then the short look is for you
5. Im trying to like it but i don't babes
6.If you were my child you would be punished
7.Im not talking to you cause you cut your hair

I guess everybody is more upset about me doing the big chop verses the natural hair, all except both my daughters. The 15yo says im gonna get a perm forever and the 13yo says ill never cut my hair.

Hmm lets see How they feel when this Beautiful naturally curly hair start to sprout from my scalp
Wow, the number of comments in this thread!

All I gotta say is, after a long while of insensitive comments and bullying, you just have to laugh. Some people really don't have any imagination! Or, any sense of aesthetics for that matter. Shrug it off, do your thing. Anyone who decides to go au natural is awesome in my book
Just rockin' the natural curls.
I have had a few, but my personal favorite was when I was in CVS and this group of older women (I'm 16) saw me walk in. My hair was pretty big that day, and they were buying relaxers. One woman was wearing a weave, another had a TWA, but with broken ends. I confidently strode in, stopping in the hair care aisle (I'm a PJ) and then the oldest of the group said, "Boo needs to get a perm." I'm pretty sure I died from laughter.
I don't think that it matters what other people say. My least favorite is when someone goes "I love your hair!" and then they pause for a minute and go "Do you ever like, get it done?" I used to wear my hair straight up until May, so my first thought is, 'How long have you known me?' then my second is 'What would my hair look like if I 'got it done'?' It's really disheartening when you love your hair but it seems like so many other people don't.
When I was little getting school pictures, the teachers and photographers would all hand me those evil little black combs. You know the ones with super small teeth that break off easy? They would basically force me to use them, even when I said I liked my hair. They'd be like "this will make it look nicer" and watch me struggle to comb my hair. I used to go home and just cry to mom that I would never look good for pictures.
My senior portrait photographer loved my hair. So eat that Lifetouch.
2C and all the 3s, iii, F, natural brunette.

Kelso: Hey, guys? I'm thinking about getting a perm. Hyde, can I get the number of your guy?
Hyde: I don't have a guy. This righteous moss is a gift from God.
