I just told her it takes me at least an hour to straighten it, my arms get tired and I don't like damaging my hair like that. She then remarked that she has the exact same type of hair as me and it takes her only a 15 minutes to straighten her hair, however her hair is about half the length of mine, at least. Then she goes on about how much she hates curly hair and starts recommending me different products to try to straighten it! I just sat there with my mouth open until she took the hint and stopped talking!!!! THEN my other coworker who overheard this says I should get a brazilian blow out because "then your hair would be straight for four months and it would look good!" and at this point I just said "Haha, excuse me," and got up and left.
How annoying. It's like that first lady just assumed you hate your hair too and you just happened to accidentally leave it curly that day. ... It reminds me of certain conversations between women at the gym, one lady telling the other, "Overweight women are so unattractive. We need to go on a diet." LOL

As for your other coworker? I have a name for her. I just can't type it here.

Ack. L I need to vent. I went for a Deva trim and color root touch up last night and two irritating things happened.

1)I asked the lady who rinsed out my color to use the Goldwell products, not Deva. It’s not that I don’t like Deva but Deva is very high in glycerin and it pulls ALL the color out of my hair – which makes the point of coloring moot. She said Deva is great for color and curly hair and Goldwell has silicones, etc. etc. but she said she’d use Goldwell. But then after she was done, she said, no, she used Deva because it is better for my hair and proceeded to give me a lecture how she brought the whole concept of curly girl and Deva into the salon and my curls were in her safe hands. Well great, but my color certainly is not. So now I am going to have all my stray grays peeking out again.

2)The lady who actually cut my hair (in the curly girl method) asked me “Didn’t you hate your hair when you were a kid?” AND she asked my “Why don’t you straighten your hair?” And yes, I did hate my hair when I was a kid so way to make me feel bad about myself when I am dropping $100 here to help me feel good about myself. It was like I was 10 years old again with my big messy hair in a classroom of sleek straight haired girls.

She defied you like that and still wanted your $$? Wow. Now that's audacity. Have you considered writing a formal review about her here and/or on yelp?

Kinda surprised to hear that a Deva trained stylist asked you about straightening your hair. Annoying! How did your cut turn out?

The cut was fine. My stylist does both straight and curly cuts and she has straight hair, so I would assume she just likes the way straight hair looks better. She is skilled but she also speaks ill of her other customers so it is more of a customer relations issue, rather than a technique issue IMO.

WRT to the Deva products and a review, I just won’t get my hair colored there anymore. Lots of place can do color, so I’m not stuck there.

I feel less sensitive about it all now but it just hit a raw nerve last week.

I HATE these comments the most. I was rocking a braid out once and a woman came to me and said "Your hair is so nice. Can I get the name brand of the hair you bought?" She pulls out paper and pen. Then I said "Sure. Its color #1 produced by Me Incorporared" I laughed and walked away but the lady didn't get it.

Default Well...

I get compliments way more than anything. Way back in middle school I had braids for a minute and some girl told me that my hair wasn't nappy enough for them they didn't stay in for long after she said that, so I thought she was right. Now I know that she was actually completely wrong.

A few months ago, a coworker told my other coworkers that I had a perm. I actually found that one hilarious

I was told I must have high self esteem to wear my hair the way I do. A comp/diss combo!

I know what you mean about just getting the cut and just going somewhere else for color. I pretty much only go to a Deva stylist for cuts (Not to say there aren't good colorists among them). Well, glad to here they got your cut right

I don't think I ever got hurtful comments, only dumb ones but they were not really hurtful, just annoying.

In elementary school we read a book about Greek stuff. One of the people wa smedusa whos supposed I be ugly,my teacher told me that sometimes I came to school and my hair looked like medusa.

When I was in in 7th grade I would always wear my hair down. My neighbor straightened it one night, and when I went to school the next day everyone treated me really nice and one guy asked me out. I kept straightening my hair for the next few weeks but then I came to school with it curly. My boyfriend saw me and after a few classes broke up with me. now I wear a hat so no can see my hair.

Another time in middle school some of my friends were talkin about pretty celebrities, I said someone who had curly hair but I don't remember who. My friend said she didn't think curly hair could be pretty.

Today, someone made another stupid remark about my hair. I tried ranting to my Asian friend but she just stared at me with a blank look on her face (lol)... Whoops, wrong person...

So I was complaining to one of my friends and I was like "I don't know what I should do with my hair for banquet" (it's a formal banquet my school is putting on).. And of COURSE he promptly said "you should straighten it!!" And I said, "NO! Why would I straighten it? It's curly!" And he said, "because all the girls will be curling the hair, so your hair won't be special" and I said, "not true. Curling irons don't make curls look real. Their curls will look fake. My hair is natural!" And he looked horrified and said, "well then, someone's conceited..." And stalked off.

I'm extremely annoyed at this. I'm not conceited about my hair!! I just have no desire to flatten away my beautiful natural curls into a generic flat hairstyle. And curling with a curling iron can never make straight hair look like mine!!!!

Ughhhhhh

Since I have embraced my curls in late Junior High, thanks to my sister's friend who also has natural curls, I have never gotten any insults.

However, before I went natural my mother used to brush my hair everyday DRY. I'll be honest, it did look bad. But my best friend would always pet it and call it 'soft' but she'd also call if 'poofy'... which she did not mean as an insult.

There was one time my church youth group went to an event and I was sitting in front of one of the "hot, popular, athletic guys" and he yelled "get your hair away from me! It will EAT me!"

These days, I laugh at it... But I do wish I had known that my hair was naturally curly and could have done it myself.

But since those horrible first year or so of Junior High was over, I have recieved nothing but compliments on my 2C/3A hair!
